The literature on fusidic acid resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains is scarce in Iran, although the emergence of these strains in health care settings is increasing. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 68 fusidic acid resistant S. aureus strains to learn about the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of strains isolated from hospitalized patients. In the present study, the prevalence of resistance to fusidic acid in S. aureus isolates was 15.1%. Fusidic acid resistance determinative factors (fusB, fusC and fusD) were identified by multiplex PCR assay. T

BACKGROUND: Human life quality and expectancy have increased dramatically over the past 5 decades because of improvements in nutrition and antibiotic's usage fighting against infectious diseases. Yet, it was soon revealed that the microbes adapted to develop resistance to any of the drugs that were used. Recently, there is great concern that commensal bacteria from food and the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals could act as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes. Methodology. This study was intended for evaluating the phenotypic antibiotic resistance/sensitivity profiles of pro

Enterococci are commensal bacteria that inhabit the digestive tracts of animals and humans. The transmission of antibiotic-resistant genes through human-animal contact poses a potential public health risk worldwide, as zoonoses from wildlife reservoirs can occur on every continent. The purpose of this study was to detect Enterococcus spp. in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and to investigate their resistance patterns, virulence profiles, and biofilm-forming ability. Conventional screening of rectal swabs (n = 67) from macaques was followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The biofilm-formi

In times of climate change, practicing a form of sustainable, climate-resilient and productive agriculture is of primordial importance. Compost could be one form of sustainable fertilizer, which is increasing humus, water holding capacity, and nutrient contents of soils. It could thereby strengthen agriculture toward the adverse effects of climate change, especially when additionally combined with biochar. To get access to sufficient amounts of suitable materials for composting, resources, which are currently treated as waste, such as human excreta, could be a promising option. However, the sa

Bacterial meningitis is still a major cause of death and disability in children worldwide. With the advent of conjugate vaccines against the three major pathogens, the burden of disease is increasingly concentrated in developing countries that cannot afford the vaccines. Antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem; in developed countries, high-level resistance to beta-lactams among Streptococcus pneumoniae necessitates the addition of vancomycin to third-generation cephalosporins. In many developing countries, the problems are more fundamental. Increasing resistance of S. pneumoniae to peni

BACKGROUND: A polymicrobial infection containing a diverse range of drug-resistant bacteria worsens the success of treatment for crocodile bite wound infection. However, there is a dearth of data in Ethiopia, where crocodile bite injuries are relatively common, particularly in the area around Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo in southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 1st, 2021, to April 30th, 2022, at Arba Minch General Hospital. Eleven consenting patients with crocodile bite wounds were enrolled in this study. Wound swabs were collected aseptically

BACKGROUND: In 2015, antimicrobial resistance was identified as a public health priority for the South-Western Indian Ocean (SWIO) (i.e. Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte (France), Reunion Island (France), and Seychelles). However, in 2020, colonization rates of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) in human populations on most islands in SWIO were still not known and neither hospital nor community colonization rates had been estimated. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of colonization of six ARB groups in hospitalized patients residing in the SWIO territories. The si
