Investigating the role of prior cooperative experience on partner choice in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Reciprocators who meet an uncooperative individual can respond by engaging in partner control through adjusting their behavior toward this partner accordingly, engaging in partner choice by avoiding this partner and approaching more cooperative partners, or doing both. However, few studies have explored the respective roles of partner control and choice within the same species. Here we asked whether Norway rats, who have been shown to engage in partner control in different reciprocal cooperation paradigms, also use partner choice to interact with conspecifics. Partner choice could be underpinn

Detecting Nonreportable Disease Trends Using Electronic Health Records: Human Parvovirus B19 in Minnesota, January 2019 Through September 2024.

OBJECTIVES: In 2024, an increase in human parvovirus B19 (B19) infections among pregnant patients resulting in severe fetal complications highlighted the lack of routine surveillance methods for nonreportable infections. We examined the utility of electronic health record (EHR) data for investigating statewide trends in nonreportable infections, using B19 as a case study. METHODS: We used EHR data from 10 health systems aggregated by the Minnesota Electronic Health Record Consortium to analyze statewide B19 trends in Minnesota. We mapped health system data to a common data model using concept

Nonswallowed Kratom-Derived Products: Unlawful Dietary Supplements That Endanger Public Health.

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 specified that dietary supplements must be swallowed. In this study, we investigated whether kratom-derived products are being sold to consumers in nonswallowed formulations. Kratom is the fresh or dried leaf powder of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. We identified 49 kratom-derived products being sold in the form of sublingual strips (24%), buccal pouches (8%), and vaping products (67%). Most contained 7-hydroxymitragynine (an alkaloid that the US Food and Drug Administration seeks to make a controlled substance), but we also identified mitr

Prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus Antibody Testing Across Geography, Time, and Social Vulnerability Among Adults in Florida, 2015-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening rates are low in the United States and may be lower among populations experiencing social vulnerability. Little is known about these potential disparities. The current study examined HCV screening prevalence across time, spatial distribution, and social vulnerability among adults in Florida. METHODS: We used data on clinical encounters from the OneFlorida+ data repository to examine the prevalence of HCV screening among adult patients in Florida (N = 1 380 811) from August 1, 2015, through July 31, 2021, by birth cohort (1924-1944, 1945-1965, 1966

Cardiovascular-Related Death Among Women With Breast Cancer in the United States: Do We Need a Better Approach for Estimating Rates?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death in this population. Understanding CVD-related death among breast cancer survivors is critical to inform policies. Previous studies calculating CVD-related death rates in this population used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wide-ranging ONline Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) with the general US female population as the denominator, which may have produced misleading comparisons. For example, age-adjusted CVD-related death

Self-Reported Mental Health and Desired Workplace Improvements Among Working Parents, United States, 2024.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have examined the mental health burden faced by working parents. We assessed the prevalence of fair or poor self-reported mental health and identified desired workplace improvements among US working parents. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis of the 2024 SummerStyles survey, a nationally representative web-based panel survey of US adults aged ≥18 years. Working parents were defined as adults employed full- or part-time with ≥1 child aged <18 years. We calculated weighted percentages and 95% CIs to characterize mental health status and workplace priorities acro

Evaluation of the Newborn Metabolic Screening Form for Surveillance of Postpartum Patients for Hepatitis B Infection in New York City, 2019-2022.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene conducts surveillance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among pregnant/postpartum patients. Patients are identified by multiple methods, including reporting of maternal hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) status on the Newborn Metabolic Screening Form (NMSF) at the time of delivery. Health Department staff investigate reports received for HBV infection among pregnant/postpartum patients, including reports of positive HBsAg status on the NMSF, to confirm maternal HBV infection (ie, a confirmed case). We restricted this evaluation to c

Simplifying Public Health Recommendations: Use of a Public CDC Chatbot During the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2022-2024.

To help people with COVID-19 and their contacts quickly understand guidelines to prevent transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed an interactive calculator that indicated whether and how long to stay home, get tested, wear face masks, and adopt other precautions. The CDC COVID-19 Calculator used a web-based chatbot format that mimicked a 2-person conversation. The calculator had the following design specifications: (1) reach an audience of people with COVID-19 (who tested positive or were symptomatic for COVID-19) and their close contacts and (2) provide an

Species-dependent gazing behavior of emotional facial expressions in dogs (Canis familiaris) and adult humans (Homo sapiens).

Emotional expressions play an important part in social communication of dogs and humans, but comparative studies between dogs and humans are rare. In addition, little is known about how emotions are perceived across species and how attention is divided among different parts of faces. Here, we compared the gazing behavior of dogs and adult humans toward emotional dog and human facial expressions. Dogs mostly gazed at the eye and nose areas, whereas the humans' focus also included the mouth area. The gazing behavior of both species was affected by the facial expressions and species presented, an

Respiratory Conditions and Health Care Use Among World Trade Center Health Program Members, 2011 to 2024.

OBJECTIVES: The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program (hereinafter, Program) provides medical monitoring and treatment for WTC-related health conditions to eligible individuals affected by 9/11. We identified Program members with a respiratory disease (RD) certification and described their characteristics, certifications, and related health care use during 2011-2024. METHODS: We analyzed administrative data on member enrollment, certifications, and medical claims from July 2011 through December 2024. We identified members certified for RD, including WTC-related health conditions within the
