Second language (L2) learners often face a number of obstacles in acquiring target-like speech production patterns. This study examines L1 Japanese speakers' production of L2 English /l/ to investigate how they implement position-dependent allophonic variation while overcoming mismatches between Japanese (L1) and English (L2) in (1) the number of liquid phonemes, (2) their allophonic distributions, and (3) syllable structure. Acoustic and articulatory (ultrasound) analyses of word-initial and word-final English /l/ produced by thirteen L1 Japanese-L2 English speakers and nine L1 English speake

Visualizing the true cardiac apex using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) remains challenging. The American Society of Echocardiography guidelines describe the left ventricle as tapering elliptically at the apex, with foreshortening causing a rounded appearance. The optimal imaging plane aligns with the long axis of the heart. However, these criteria do not objectively confirm whether the apex visualized on TTE represents the true anatomical apex. This report provides a practice-based insight into this limitation of routine two-dimensional TTE. We compared TTE and cardiac computed tomograph

Precise regulation of progenitor identity is essential for the formation of functional auditory circuits. Cochlear nuclei arise from two major progenitor populations: Atoh1-expressing progenitors generate excitatory glutamatergic neurons, while Ptf1a-expressing progenitors generate inhibitory GABAergic and glycinergic neurons. Lmx1a and Lmx1b, expressed in the hindbrain roof plate, maintain Atoh1 expression in lower rhombic lip progenitors that give rise to excitatory neurons of the cochlear nuclei. Detailed analysis using dye tracing of cochlear and vestibular central projections revealed an

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder that poses a significant risk to human health and well-being. The high cost and invasiveness of neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis underscores the necessity for accessible early screening via blood samples. In this study, we developed an ultrasound-based strategy for emergent macroscopic that enhances the acoustic response enrichment of specific proteins by introducing functionalized microspheres. This customized macroscopic-directed aggregation method combines protein enrichment with specific fluorescent a

The accurate representation of sound in the central auditory pathway of mammals depends on the cochlea, the peripheral sensory organ, which is optimised to detect acoustic signals with unparalleled temporal precision. Beyond its role in converting acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, the cochlea also plays a key role in shaping the maturation of the auditory pathway during pre-hearing stages. This process is essential for creating the tonotopic maps used to identify a broad range of sound frequencies. To achieve this extraordinary task, the sensory hair cells and supporting cells of the p

INTRODUCTION: Shared selection pressures often explain convergent trait loss, yet anurans (frogs and toads) have lost their middle ears at least 38 times with no obvious shared selection pressures unifying "earless" taxa. Anuran tympanic middle ear loss is especially perplexing because acoustic communication is dominant within Anura and tympanic middle ears enhance airborne hearing in most tetrapods.
METHODS: Here, we use phylogenetic comparative methods to examine whether particular geographic ranges, microhabitats, activity patterns, or aspects of acoustic communication are associated with

A cochlear implant is a neuroprosthetic device that can restore speech perception for people with severe to profound hearing loss. Because of recent evolutions, a growing number of people with a cochlear implant have useful residual acoustic hearing. While combined electro-acoustic stimulation has been shown to improve speech perception for this group of people, some studies report limited adoption rates. Here, we present electro-vibrational stimulation as an alternative combined stimulation strategy that similarly targets the full cochlear reserve. This novel strategy combines the electrical

While most anuran species are highly vocal, few of them seem to be endowed with a complex call repertoire. Odorrana tormota, combines a remarkable vocalization complexity with auditory sensitivity over an extended spectral range spanning from audible to ultrasonic frequencies. This species is also exceptional for its ability to modify its middle ear tuning by closing the Eustachian tubes (ET). Using scanning laser Doppler vibrometry, the tympanal vibrations were measured to investigate if the tuning shift caused by the ET closure contributes to intraspecific acoustic communication. To gain ins

PURPOSE: This study explores the influence of the noise-canceling technology in commercial earphones on sound pressure levels and preferred listening levels in terms of hearing protection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty individuals completed puretone audiometry and real-ear measurements to assess sound pressure levels at the level of the eardrum with and without the activation of the noise-canceling function. The Knowles Electronics Manikin for Acoustic Research was used to investigate the acoustic characteristics of two environmental sounds (bus and café). Two types of earphones (wireless and

Acoustic hearing aids generate amplified sound in the ear canal, and they are the standard of care for patients with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. However, because of their limited frequency bandwidth, gain, and feedback, there is substantial room for improvement. Active middle ear implants, which directly vibrate the middle ear and cochlea, are an alternative approach to conventional acoustic hearing aids. They provide an opportunity to improve sound quality and speech understanding with amplification rehabilitation. For floating-mass type and direct-rod type (DRT) middle ear t

Deprivation of acoustic input during a critical period leads to abnormal auditory development in humans. The molecular basis underlying the susceptibility of auditory cortex to loss of afferent input remains largely unknown. The transcription factor early growth response-1 (EGR-1) expression in the visual cortex has been shown to be crucial in the formation of vision, but the role of EGR-1 during the process of auditory function formation is still unclear. In this study, we presented data showing that EGR-1 was expressed in the neurons of the primary auditory cortex (A1) in mice. We observed t

Successful categorization requires listeners to represent the incoming sensory information, resolve the "blooming, buzzing confusion" inherent to noisy sensory signals, and leverage the accumulated evidence towards making a decision. Despite decades of intense debate, the neural systems underlying speech categorization remain unresolved. Here we assessed the neural representation and categorization of lexical tones by native Mandarin speakers (N = 31) across a range of acoustic and contextual variabilities (talkers, perceptual saliences, and stimulus-contexts) using functional magnetic imaging

BACKGROUND: Snoring source analysis is essential for an appropriate surgical decision for both simple snorers and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients.
OBJECTIVE: As snoring sounds carry significant information about tissue vibrations within the upper airway, a new feature entitled compressed histogram of oriented gradients (CHOG) is proposed to recognize vibration patterns of the snoring source acoustically by compressing histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) descriptors via the multilinear principal component analysis (MPCA) algorithm.
METHODS: Each vibration pattern

Transmission of sound to dolphins during electrophysiological hearing screening is conducted out of water in certain cases (e.g., strandings). This necessitates that sound be delivered using a contact transducer either pressed against the skin or affixed to the jaw using a suction cup (i.e., "jawphones"). This study examined how bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, n = 3) auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) varied with electrode and jawphone location during aerial testing. Stimuli were tone bursts with center frequencies of 28 to 160 kHz. Regression-based thresholds were lowest with the jaw

When listening to temporally regular rhythms, most people are able to extract the beat. Evidence suggests that the neural mechanism underlying this ability is the phase alignment of endogenous oscillations to the external stimulus, allowing for the prediction of upcoming events (i.e., dynamic attending). Relatedly, individuals with dyslexia may have deficits in the entrainment of neural oscillations to external stimuli, especially at low frequencies. The current experiment investigated rhythmic processing in adults with dyslexia and matched controls. Regular and irregular rhythms were presente

We investigated auditory processing in a young patient who experienced a single embolus causing an infarct in the right middle cerebral artery territory. This led to damage to auditory cortex including planum temporale that spared medial Heschl's gyrus, and included damage to the posterior insula and inferior parietal lobule. She reported chronic difficulties with segregating speech from noise and segregating elements of music. Clinical tests showed no evidence for abnormal cochlear function. Follow-up tests confirmed difficulties with auditory segregation in her left ear that spanned multiple

Monitoring auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) is a common method of assessing auditory processing in non-model species. Although ABRs are widely used to compare auditory abilities across taxa, the extent to which different features of acoustic stimuli affect the ABR is largely unknown in most non-mammalian species. The authors investigated the effects of varying presentation rate and onset time to determine how different features of acoustic stimuli influence the ABR in Northern saw-whet owls (Aegolius acadicus), a species known for their unique auditory adaptations and hunting abilities. Collision with wind turbines is a conservation concern for eagles with population abundance implications. The development of acoustic alerting technologies to deter eagles from entering hazardous air spaces is a potentially significant mitigation strategy to diminish associated morbidity and mortality risks. As a prelude to the engineering of deterrence technologies, auditory function was assessed in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), as well as in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). Cultural transmission of behaviour is important in a wide variety of vertebrate taxa from birds to humans. Vocal traditions and vocal learning provide a strong foundation for studying culture and its transmission in both humans and cetaceans. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) perform complex, culturally transmitted song displays that can change both evolutionarily (through accumulations of small changes) or revolutionarily (where a population rapidly adopts a novel song). The degree of coordination and conformity underlying song revolutions makes their study of particular interest.
