Instrumental articulatory techniques investigating lingual variability in typically developing children: A scoping review.

This scoping review was designed to provide an overview of instrumental articulatory techniques used to investigate lingual variability in typically developing children. Despite extensive research on phonological acquisition, the development of speech motor control in children is less understood. Kinematic studies in this area have focused on children under 10, but adolescents' speech and the attainment of adult-like motor control remains under-researched. This review includes studies using instrumental techniques such as Ultrasound Tongue Imaging (UTI), Electropalatography (EPG) and Electroma

Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome Presented with Giant Coronary Artery Dilatation - Presentation of Two Cases and a Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease is an acute, self-limited vasculitis of childhood characterized by fever, bilateral nonexudative conjunctivitis, erythema of the lips and oral mucosa, changes in the extremities, rash, and cervical lymphadenopathy. Coronary artery aneurysms or ectasia develop in approximately 15 to 25% of untreated children with the disease and may lead to myocardial infarction, sudden death, or ischemic heart disease. Despite an overlap of clinical features with toxic shock syndrome, children with Kawasaki disease generally do not develop shock. OBJECTIVE: Here we present two ado

Management of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome in Children and Adolescents: A Position Paper From the ESPGHAN Polyposis Working Group.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a well-described inherited syndrome, characterized by the development of gastrointestinal polyps, and characteristic mucocutaneous freckling. Development of small bowel intestinal polyps may lead to intussusception in children may require emergency laparotomy with potential loss of bowel. Gastrointestinal polyps may lead to bleeding and anemia. This European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition position paper provides a guide for diagnosis, assessment, and management of PJS in children and adolescents and guidance on avoiding complica

Acne vulgaris: The metabolic syndrome of the pilosebaceous follicle.

Acne vulgaris is an epidemic inflammatory disease of the human sebaceous follicle and represents the most common skin disease affecting about 85% of adolescents in Westernized populations. Acne vulgaris is primarily a disease of wealthy countries and exhibits higher prevalence rates in developed compared with developing countries. No acne has been found in non-Westernized populations still living under Paleolithic dietary conditions constraining hyperglycemic carbohydrates, milk, and dairy products. The high prevalence rates of adolescent acne cannot be explained by the predominance of genetic

Polymyxin-B immobilized column-direct hemoperfusion for adolescent toxic shock syndrome.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a critical illness associated with toxin from Staphylococcus aureus. Despite recent advances in critical care, mortality remains high and additional effective therapy is required. We report an adolescent case of TSS successfully treated with direct hemoperfusion using polymyxin-B immobilized fiber (PMX-DHP). The patient with spina bifida also had ischial pressure ulcer, and developed TSS associated with methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Despite conventional treatment, the patient developed refractory shock, which was immediately improved with PMX-DHP. PMX-DHP has b

Socioeconomic and environmental determinants of adolescent asthma in urban Latin America: an ecological analysis.

The prevalence of asthma is high in urban areas of many Latin-American countries where societies show high levels of inequality and different levels of development. This study aimed to examine the relationship between asthma symptoms prevalence in adolescents living in Latin American urban centers and socioeconomic and environmental determinants measured at the ecological level. Asthma prevalence symptoms were obtained from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) phase III. A hierarchical conceptual framework was defined and the explanatory variables were organized

[Evolutionary perspective in precocious puberty].

Pubertal development is subject to substantial heritability, but much variation remains to be explained, including fast changes over the last 150 years, that cannot be explained by changes of gene frequency in the population. This article discusses the influence of environmental factors to adjust maturational tempo in the service of fitness goals. Utilizing evolutionary development thinking (evo-devo), the author examines adolescence as an evolutionary life-history stage in its developmental context. The transition from the preceding stage of juvenility entails adaptive plasticity in response

Geometric computation of human gyrification indexes from magnetic resonance images.

Human brains are highly convoluted surfaces with multiple folds. To characterize the complexity of these folds and their relationship with neurological and psychiatric conditions, different techniques have been developed to quantify the folding patterns, also known as the surface complexity or gyrification of the brain. In this study, the authors propose a new geometric approach to measure the gyrification of human brains from magnetic resonance images. This approach is based on intrinsic 3D measurements that relate the local brain surface area to the corresponding area of a tightly wrapped sh

Isolated relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the breast of a young female.

A 20-year-old female developed a relapse of B-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) as a mass in her left breast after 6 years of maintained continuous complete remission. No leukemic lesions were identified in other sites such as the bone marrow or cerebrospinal fluid. The relapsed leukemic cells in the breast revealed the same immunophenotypes (CD10(+), CD19(+), CD20(+), HLA-DR(+), CD34(+)) as those of the onset ALL cells in the bone marrow. A literature survey found 10 other cases of ALL relapse in the breast without bone marrow involvement, mostly consisting of adolescent girls. Inc

[Sex-specific drug abuse prevention in adolescence].

Several studies are discovering differences in how boys and girls use tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. In general, boys and girls differ in the intensity and the quality of drug use. Male adolescents report higher usage of drugs than female adolescents do (exception: medication). However, there are only few prevention programmes with integrated sex-specific strategies. The few existing girl-specific and boy-specific prevention programmes focus on strain and deficits. Drug consumption is considered a result of inadequate socialisation and development of boys and girls. New preventive strategi

Auxology - an update 2025.

Growth is a dynamic process and a mirror of health. Documenting child and adolescent growth includes careful, and if possible, longitudinal recordings of height, weight, and indicators of the state of maturity. Measurements should be translated into centiles or z-scores. Changes in height z-scores are related to the progress in maturation, and sensitive to growth arrests and catch-up growth. Heritability studies and genome-wide association studies have traditionally been applied to assess the intrinsic regulators of growth. Nutritional, environmental and socio-economic factors are usually cons

Implementing school-based nutrition interventions in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review of implementation strategies, frameworks, and outcomes.

School-based nutrition interventions are widely used to improve nutrition among children and adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. This scoping review examined implementation strategies, theories, models, frameworks, and implementation outcomes reported for school-based nutrition interventions in these settings. We included English-language primary studies conducted in school settings in low- and middle-income countries if they reported implementation strategies, implementation outcomes, theories, models or frameworks, barriers, facilitators, adaptation, sustainability, scale-up, or

Pivoting school health and nutrition programmes during COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Preventive and promotive interventions delivered by schools can support a healthy lifestyle, positive development, and well-being in children and adolescents. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic presented unique challenges to school health and nutrition programmes due to closures and mobility restrictions. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to examine how school health and nutrition programmes pivoted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide summative guidance to stakeholders in strategic immediate and long-term response efforts. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, P

Consider CUX1 variants in children with a variation of sex development: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The Cut Homeobox 1 (CUX1) gene has been implicated in a number of developmental processes and has recently emerged as an important cause of developmental delay and impaired intellectual development. Individuals with variants in CUX1 have been described with a variety of co-morbidities including variations in sex development (VSD) although these features have not been closely documented. CASE PRESENTATION: The proband is a 14-year-old male who presented with congenital complex hypospadias, neurodevelopmental differences, and subtle dysmorphism. A family history of neurodevelopmenta

[Mental health of children conceived after assisted reproductive treatment].

The prevalence of infertility and the use of assisted reproductive treatment (ART) have been increasing worldwide in recent years. It appeared relevant to conduct a literature review on the safety of these techniques regarding the neurodevelopment and mental health of children and adolescents especially after in vitro fertilization. ART represents obstetrical risk factors. However, the published results are reassuring on the neurodevelopmental level as well as on the cognitive, psychomotor and language levels and on the behavioral and emotional levels among children and adolescents resulting f

Developmental Language Disorder and Writing: A Scoping Review From Childhood to Adulthood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review of literature focused on the effects of developmental language disorder (DLD) on writing skills across the life span to highlight gaps in our knowledge of how to support writing for this population. METHOD: We adopted the five-step framework for conducting scoping reviews outlined by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) to identify literature focused on writing outcomes for individuals with DLD in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. RESULTS: Seventy-two studies from 1991 to 2022 met review criteria. Results indicated that spelling m

Taste assessment for paediatric drug Development: A comparison of bitterness taste aversion in children versus Naïve and expert young adult assessors.

Medicines for children often taste bitter, presenting a significant challenge to treatment compliance. However, most studies on paediatric drug development rely on adult volunteers for sensory research, and the level of expertise required from these assessors is unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating perceived bitterness aversion to taste strips impregnated with different concentrations of quinine hydrochloride in 439 school-aged children. Expert (n = 26) and naïve (n = 65) young adult assessors evaluated quinine solutions as well as taste strips, for methodological bri
