Adolescence is a critical period for neurometabolite maturation as well as the onset of alcohol use, yet remains underexplored despite its significance for long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. We used 3T proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to examine age- and alcohol-related associations with six neurometabolites in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) that are involved in key neural functions: glutamate + glutamine (Glx), GABA plus macromolecules (GABA+), total N-acetylaspartate (tNAA), total choline (tCho), total creatine (tCr), and myo-inositol (mI). Participants were 84 adole

BACKGROUND: The alcohol cue-exposure paradigm is widely used in alcohol use disorder (AUD) research. Individuals with AUD exhibit considerable variability in their alcohol cue-reactivity, highlighting the need to identify characteristics that contribute to this heterogeneity. This study applied machine learning models to identify clinical and sociodemographic predictors of subjective alcohol cue-reactivity (ALCUrge).
METHODS: Individuals with AUD (N = 139; 83 M/56F) completed an alcohol cue-exposure paradigm and a battery of clinical and sociodemographic measures. ALCUrge (primary outcome var

The relationship between alcohol consumption levels and carotid atherosclerosis remains controversial. We investigated this association in 2357 general population participants and 272 in-patients treated for alcohol-related disorders (narcology patients) aged 35-69 years in Arkhangelsk, Russia (Know Your Heart study, 2015-2017). Participants were categorized as non-drinking, non-problem drinking, hazardous drinking, harmful drinking, and narcology patients. Carotid atherosclerosis was assessed via carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), plaque score (0-6 points), and presence of stenosis ≥ 50%.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) and serotonin syndrome (SS) share several overlapping symptoms, complicating diagnosis in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) on serotonergic treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 54-year-old male with a history of AUD and anxiety disorder who presented to a residential treatment center after patient report about 11 days of alcohol abstinence. Despite an initially mild withdrawal course, he developed worsening tremors, nausea, diarrhea, diaphoresis, muscle twitching, rigidity, and restlessness beyond the typical AWS timeframe. His med

BACKGROUND: Prior longitudinal studies demonstrate that sleep disturbance is a risk factor for alcohol misuse. Experimental research also shows that alcohol intake negatively impacts sleep. The present study evaluated temporal bidirectional relationships between sleep and alcohol intake using intensive longitudinal methods.
METHODS: 57 college students (71 % female, Mage 24.1) participated in a two-week study assessing their daily sleep and alcohol use. Participants wore an actiwatch and completed daily diaries about their sleep and alcohol intake. Multi-level zero-inflated negative binomial

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of safe and effective outpatient treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD), primary care physicians screen and treat only a fraction of their patients with AUD. To better detect AUD, it may be effective to evaluate whether the known gastrointestinal consequences of heavy alcohol consumption are linked to subsequent AUD diagnoses. This study examined whether irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastritis/ulcer were associated with a new AUD diagnosis.
METHODS: Deidentified medical record data from a large Midwestern hea

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that continually causes significant suffering. Although pharmacotherapies are available, they have low efficacy and show little compliance. Thus, new approaches for AUD treatment are still needed. The core symptoms of AUD include drug seeking, consumption, and withdrawal, which occur in distinct shifted time phases. Recent neurobiological research has revealed that these phases have rather unique underlying neurobiological processes and neuropharmacology. We propose a new treatment strategy based on available pharmacotherapies with

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a leading cause of liver disease worldwide, caused by hazardous alcohol use. Many patients with ALD also have alcohol use disorder (AUD), a chronic mental health condition characterized by a cluster of behavioral, cognitive, and physiological symptoms that indicate continued alcohol use despite significant alcohol-related problems. Comprehensive care of ALD often requires treatment of AUD, and evidence has demonstrated that treating the latter improves patient outcomes. However, only a minority of patients with AUD/ALD receive treatment. Integrative ca

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Alcohol consumption is a major public health issue, linked to a wide range of physical, psychological, familial, and social harms, as well as increased rates of violence, accidents, and mortality. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational interviewing program in reducing alcohol consumption patterns among Thai patients.
METHODS: This quasi-experimental study included a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG), each consisting of 30 patients. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS, utilizing both d

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use surges in late adolescence, particularly among college students, and is associated with a wide variety of negative socio-emotional, academic, legal, and health consequences. Although most studies assess risk for these consequences through self-report of drinking quantity and frequency, ample evidence indicates that youth who drink alcohol can be inaccurate in reporting their drinking behavior and that estimates become increasingly biased as drinking increases. In the current study, we examined two approaches for optimizing self-reported alcohol consumption estimates to

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among women varies by age, with younger women more likely to binge drink and older women more often engaging in consistent, long-term consumption. Both groups face health risks, including chronic disease, mental health conditions, and sleep disturbance. Cannabis has been proposed as a harm reduction substitute for alcohol because of its lower risks of dependency and health harms. The aims of this study are (a) to identify differences between younger and older women regarding their choices to use cannabis products as a substitute for alcohol and (b) to explore multiple d

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the proportion of female patients from Mayo Clinic Family Medicine and Community Internal Medicine clinics who are aware of alcohol use as a breast cancer (BC) risk factor.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One thousand women aged 21 to 70 completed a survey collecting information on demographics, medical/family history, frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption, and other health behaviors. Participants were also asked to grade how likely certain factors were to increase lifetime BC risk.
RESULTS: Most participants (844/990 [85.3%]) identified a family history of BC as a BC ri

A high prevalence of alcohol consumption has been described among medical students. However, due to possible variations in the patterns of alcohol consumption and possible biological, social and cultural differences among different populations, it is relevant to address the relations that exist between at-risk alcohol consumption and associated social and psychological factors in a group of medical students. A cross-sectional study was carried out. In the AUDIT, at-risk alcohol use was defined as ≥ 8 (males) and ≥6 (females). Associations were assessed using multivariable logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol intake promotes the translocation of endotoxins, stimulating immune cell activation and the production of cellular mediators, dysregulating the inflammatory process. We simultaneously evaluated the number of immune cells and cytokine concentrations, in relation to the pattern of alcohol consumption.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study included five groups according to alcohol intake (hazardous drinking [HD], low alcohol use disorders [AUDs] [l-AUDs], moderate-severe AUDs [ms-AUDs], no decompensated cirrhosis, and alcohol-associated hepatitis [AH]). The control (CT) group was

Background: Although the impact of parental alcohol misuse has been widely published in various studies, there is very little that is known about the lives and experiences of children affected by the issue from their own perspectives. Denial and secrecy are hallmarks of this issue, and children's voices too often go unheard. Moreover, most studies rely on a small homogeneous sample limiting generalisability. The perspectives of minority ethnic families and children are absent. Equally so, are gaps in studies about middle-class society who are more able to mask their issues and less frequently

Globally, alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive drug and a leading cause of premature death among individuals aged 15-49 years. Understanding the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of alcohol in the human body, otherwise known as alcohol pharmacokinetics, is essential for predicting its behavioral effects and toxic consequences. This review examines the evolutionary origins of alcohol consumption and metabolism, focusing on the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes across species, which serve as key catalysts in alcohol oxidation. It also highlights recent advances

INTRODUCTION: Although there are racial/ethnic differences in alcohol use, there is little information about differences in mortality from all alcohol-related conditions or by cause of death. Furthermore, little is known about the degree to which racial/ethnic differences in mortality persist after adjusting for ethanol consumption. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to comprehensively assess racial/ethnic differences in alcohol-attributable deaths and reduced life expectancy.
METHODS: Alcohol prevalence data were from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and mortality d
