Oral Myiasis in a 6-year-old Child with Cerebral Palsy: A Case Report.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Myiasis is an infestation of live humans or animals with dipterous larvae that feed on the host's live or dead tissue. The incidence of oral myiasis is rare and even less common in children. Poor oral hygiene, neurological disabilities, bedridden or locomotor disabilities, low socioeconomic status, malnutrition, etc., are shown as important predisposing factors. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old female child reported a chief complaint of swelling, pain, and bleeding in the upper front teeth region for 1 day. Extraoral examination showed swelling of the right anterior region

Slaying the Serpent: A Research Agenda to Expand Intervention Development and Accelerate Guinea Worm Eradication Efforts.

Dracunculiasis, also known as Guinea worm disease, is targeted to become the second human disease and first parasitic infection to be eradicated. The global Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP), through community-based interventions, reduced the burden of disease from an estimated 3.5 million cases per year in 1986 to only 13 human cases in 2022. Despite progress, in 2012 Guinea worm disease was detected in domesticated dogs and later in domesticated cats and baboons. Without previous development of any Guinea worm therapeutics, diagnostic tests to detect pre-patent Guinea worm infection, or

A Potential Use of Vidarabine: Alleviation of Functional Constipation Through Modulation of the Adenosine A2A Receptor-MLC Signaling Pathway and the Gut Microbiota.

Vidarabine (VID) is an antiviral medication that is commonly utilized to treat conditions such as hand, foot, and mouth disease and herpes. Constipation is a prevalent complication of these diseases. Could VID treat these diseases by influencing defecation behavior? To date, no studies have been conducted on the potential of VID to relieve constipation. Therefore, a systematic investigation was conducted into the laxative effects and mechanisms of VID using loperamide-induced functional constipated mice. The findings indicate that the oral administration of VID promoted gastrointestinal perist

A participatory approach to move towards a One Health surveillance system for anthrax in Burkina Faso.

The One Health approach calls for collaboration across various sectors and different scales to improve understanding of complex health issues. Regarding epidemiological surveillance, this implies the development of integrated systems that link several surveillance components operating in different domains (human, domestic animals, environment) and involving several actor networks. However, surveillance continues to operate in a very compartmentalized way, with little interaction between sectoral institutions and with the community for the governance and operation of surveillance activities. Slowed gastrointestinal transit is associated with an altered caecal microbiota in an aged rat model.

Gastrointestinal (GI) motility is largely dependent upon activity within the enteric nervous system (ENS) and is an important part of the digestive process. Dysfunction of the ENS can impair GI motility as is seen in the case of constipation where gut transit time is prolonged. Animal models mimicking symptoms of constipation have been developed by way of pharmacological manipulations. Studies have reported an association between altered GI motility and gut microbial population. Little is known about the changes in gut microbiota profile resulting specifically from pharmacologically induced sl

Space weather disrupts nocturnal bird migration.

Space weather, including solar storms, can impact Earth by disturbing the geomagnetic field. Despite the known dependence of birds and other animals on geomagnetic cues for successful seasonal migrations, the potential effects of space weather on organisms that use Earth's magnetic field for navigation have received little study. We tested whether space weather geomagnetic disturbances are associated with disruptions to bird migration at a macroecological scale. We leveraged long-term radar data to characterize the nightly migration dynamics of the nocturnally migrating North American avifauna

Metabolomic Alterations of Volatile Organic Compounds and Bile Acids as Biomarkers of Microbial Shifts in a Murine Model of Short Bowel Syndrome.

Pediatric short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare condition characterized by a massive loss of the small intestine, leading to the inability to meet nutritional requirements without the use of parenteral or enteral supplementation. SBS causes profound alterations in the intestinal microbiome and metabolome. The aim of this study was a detailed assessment of the intestinal microbiome and metabolome in a murine model of SBS. We performed a 60% proximal small bowel resection versus a sham operation in C57BL/6 mice. Four weeks postoperatively, the microbial communities of different intestinal segment

Gut Microbial Alteration in MPTP Mouse Model of Parkinson Disease is Administration Regimen Dependent.

Parkinson Disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons involved in motor functions. Growing evidence indicates that gut microbiota communicates with the brain known as the gut-brain axis (GBA). Mitochondrial toxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is commonly used in animal studies to investigate the GBA in PD. Various MPTP administration regimens are performed in PD mouse models involving one to multiple injections in 1 day or one injection per day for several days. The aim of this study is to investigate if

Excessive self-grooming, gene dysregulation and imbalance between the striosome and matrix compartments in the striatum of Shank3 mutant mice.

Autism is characterized by atypical social communication and stereotyped behaviors. Mutations in the gene encoding the synaptic scaffolding protein SHANK3 are detected in 1-2% of patients with autism and intellectual disability, but the mechanisms underpinning the symptoms remain largely unknown. Here, we characterized the behavior of Shank3 Δ11/Δ11 mice from 3 to 12 months of age. We observed decreased locomotor activity, increased stereotyped self-grooming and modification of socio-sexual interaction compared to wild-type littermates. We then used RNAseq on four brain regions of the same ani

Antibiotic-Resistant Desulfovibrio Produces H2S from Supplements for Animal Farming.

Sulphate-reducing bacteria, primarily Desulfovibrio, are responsible for the active generation of H2S in swine production waste. The model species for sulphate reduction studies, Desulfovibrio vulgaris strain L2, was previously isolated from swine manure characterized by high rates of dissimilatory sulphate reduction. The source of electron acceptors in low-sulphate swine waste for the high rate of H2S formation remains uncertain. Here, we demonstrate the ability of the L2 strain to use common animal farming supplements including L-lysine-sulphate, gypsum and gypsum plasterboards as electron a

Why do humans need thrombospondin-1?

Matricellular proteins comprise several families of secreted proteins that function in higher animals at the interface between cells and their surrounding extracellular matrix. Targeted gene disruptions that result in loss of viability in mice have revealed critical roles for several matricellular proteins in murine embryonic development, including two members of the cellular communication network (CCN) gene family. In contrast, mice lacking single or multiple members of the thrombospondin (THBS) gene family remain viable and fertile. The frequency of loss of function mutants, identified using

Light regulation in critical human pathogens of clinical relevance such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

It is now clearly recognized that light modulates the physiology of many bacterial chemotrophs, either directly or indirectly. An interesting case are bacterial pathogens of clinical relevance. This work summarizes, discusses, and provides novel complementary information to what is currently known about light sensing and responses in critical human pathogens such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. These pathogens are associated with severe hospital and community infections difficult to treat due to resistance to multiple drugs. Moreover, light respons

Endocrine effects of exposure to artificial light at night: A review and synthesis of knowledge gaps.

Animals have evolved with natural patterns of light and darkness, such that light serves as an important zeitgeber, allowing adaptive synchronization of behavior and physiology to external conditions. Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) interferes with this process, resulting in dysregulation of endocrine systems. In this review, we evaluate the endocrine effects of ALAN exposure in birds and reptiles, identify major knowledge gaps, and highlight areas for future research. There is strong evidence for ecologically relevant levels of ALAN acting as an environmental endocrine disruptor.

An unusual identification of Rickettsia parkeri in synanthropic rodents and domiciliated dogs of a rural community from Yucatán, Mexico.

Rickettsia parkeri belongs to the spotted fever group (SFG) of the Rickettsia genus. This bacterium causes mild rickettsiosis in humans and is mainly transmitted by Amblyomma ticks. Its medical importance is emerging in the Americas, including Mexico. Synanthropic rodents and domiciled dogs participate as accidental hosts in epidemiological cycles of Rickettsia of the SFG. The aim is to report the presence of R. parkeri in synanthropic rodents and domiciled dogs from a rural community of Yucatán, Mexico. Rodents were captured, and plasma samples were taken from dogs in 48 households from Ucú,

Characteristics of Bacterial Microbiota in Different Intestinal Segments of Aohan Fine-Wool Sheep.

The microbial community performs vital functions in the intestinal system of animals. Modulation of the gut microbiota structure can indirectly or directly affect gut health and host metabolism. Aohan fine-wool sheep grow in semi-desert grasslands in China and show excellent stress tolerance. In this study, we amplified 16S rRNA gene to investigate the dynamic distribution and adaptability of the gut microbiome in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon, and rectum of seven Aohan fine-wool sheep at 12 months. The results showed that the microbial composition and diversity of the ileum and t
