Exposure to nature for children with autism spectrum disorder: Benefits, caveats, and barriers.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disorder in countries across the world. Although recent studies have demonstrated the health benefits of nature for typically developing children and children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it is unclear whether these benefits extend to children with ASD. In this study, we investigated whether benefits associated with exposure to nature could be observed by parents of children diagnosed with ASD. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 parents and caregivers of children on the spectrum from two cities i

Maladaptive Daydreaming and Psychopathology: A Meta-Analysis.

Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a clinical condition that cannot be explained by any existing psychopathology. The empirical literature regarding MD suggests that it is associated with mental afflictions and exhibits attributes resembling a psychological disorder. This study aimed to meta-analytically investigate the relationship between MD and various manifestations of mental distress and dysfunction. Forty studies, totaling 24,977 individuals (Mean(age) = 28.75, SD = 9.90), met our eligibility inclusion criteria and were incorporated in the analyses. Findings revealed that MD is positively a

Identifying Distinct Tourette Disorder Subtypes using Clinical Data.

BACKGROUND: Tourette Disorder (TD), or Tourette Syndrome, is a highly heterogeneous childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder with a global prevalence of 0.5%. TD's large phenotypic heterogeneity, variable heritability patterns, and frequent but varied comorbidity with other neurodevelopmental disorders indicate that different TD patients might have different etiologies. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we performed unsupervised clustering of clinical data, such as categorical diagnoses and comorbidities, from 865 subjects with TD from the Tourette International Collaborative Genetics (TIC Geneti

Multiscale neural gradients reflect transdiagnostic effects of major psychiatric conditions on cortical morphology.

It is increasingly recognized that multiple psychiatric conditions are underpinned by shared neural pathways, affecting similar brain systems. Here, we carried out a multiscale neural contextualization of shared alterations of cortical morphology across six major psychiatric conditions (autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, major depression disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia). Our framework cross-referenced shared morphological anomalies with respect to cortical myeloarchitecture and cytoarchitecture, as well as connectome

Headaches and psychopathology in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between chronic headaches and DSM-III-R-defined psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety disorders, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, in a population-based sample of children and adolescents. METHOD: 1,013 children aged 9 to 15 years in the Great Smoky Mountains Study were evaluated annually over a 3-year period using the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment, a child and parent diagnostic psychiatric interview. Headaches that lasted at least 1 hour and occurred at least once a

Height distribution in children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is characterized by motor and vocal tics, frequently accompanied by attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, coprolalia, aggressive or self-injurious behavior, and learning disabilities. We investigated the height distribution and clinical characteristics of 38 consecutive patients with Tourette syndrome. Seventeen patients with Tourette syndrome (44.7%) were in the lower height quartile versus 25% from a control group of 44 patients with ADHD (P <.05). The mean standard deviation score differential (patient height - [target height]) was

Epileptiform activity and cognitive deficits in SNAP-25(+/-) mice are normalized by antiepileptic drugs.

Synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25) is a protein that participates in the regulation of synaptic vesicle exocytosis through the formation of the soluble NSF attachment protein receptor complex and modulates voltage-gated calcium channels activity. The Snap25 gene has been associated with schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and bipolar disorder, and lower levels of SNAP-25 have been described in patients with schizophrenia. We used SNAP-25 heterozygous (SNAP-25(+/-)) mice to investigate at which extent the reduction of the protein levels affects neuronal net

A Review of the Impact of Maternal Obesity on the Cognitive Function and Mental Health of the Offspring.

Globally, more than 20% of women of reproductive age are currently estimated to be obese. Children born to obese mothers are at higher risk of developing obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and asthma in adulthood. Increasing clinical and experimental evidence suggests that maternal obesity also affects the health and function of the offspring brain across the lifespan. This review summarizes the current findings from human and animal studies that detail the impact of maternal obesity on aspects of learning, memory, motivation, affective disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivit

The association between attempted suicide and ADHD in adolescents: A large-scale population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents. Although suicide attempts are most frequently associated with mood, sleep, and personality disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may also confer risk. We hypothesized that ADHD is independently associated with suicide attempts beyond the effects of psychiatric comorbidities. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based case-control study using electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services (N = 1,652,752) among adolescents aged 12-18 years. The study group comprised 1763 adolesc

New horizons for the study of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and its active ingredients in the management of neurological and psychiatric disorders: A systematic review of clinical evidence and mechanisms.

Saffron (Crocus sativus), as an herbal medicine, has been extensively investigated for treating neurological and psychiatric disorders. This systematic review aimed to assess the overall effects of saffron on cognition, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified by searching PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Clinical Trials databases up to June 2023 according to search terms and inclusion criteria. The participants were either healthy or suffering

Parental Age and Differential Estimates of Risk for Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Findings From the Danish Birth Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Parental age at birth has been shown to affect the rates of a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, but the understanding of the mechanisms through which it mediates different outcomes is still lacking. A population-based cohort was used to assess differential effects of parental age on estimates of risk across pediatric-onset neuropsychiatric disorders: autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette's disorder/chronic tic disorder (TD/CT). METHOD: The study cohort included all singleton births in

Smoking and ADHD: an evaluation of self medication and behavioral disinhibition models based on comorbidity and personality patterns.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of smoking is significantly increased among adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and this association has a significant impact in both disorders, ascribed to either self-medication or behavioral disinhibition hypotheses. However, little is known about clinical variables associated with cigarette smoking among patients with ADHD. The present study evaluates comorbidity, demographic and personality profiles of patients with ADHD in relation to smoking status. METHODS: Patients (n422) were evaluated in the adult ADHD outpatient clinic of Hospital

Serotonergic function, two-mode models of self-regulation, and vulnerability to depression: what depression has in common with impulsive aggression.

Evidence from diverse literatures supports the viewpoint that two modes of self-regulation exist, a lower-order system that responds quickly to associative cues of the moment and a higher-order system that responds more reflectively and planfully; that low serotonergic function is linked to relative dominance of the lower-order system; that how dominance of the lower-order system is manifested depends on additional variables; and that low serotonergic function therefore can promote behavioral patterns as divergent as impulsive aggression and lethargic depression. Literatures reviewed include w

Conduct disorder and personality disorders in hospitalized adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between DSM-III-R Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in hospitalized adolescents with and without conduct disorder. The spectrum of psychopathology associated with conduct disorder, especially personality disorder symptoms and diagnoses, remains largely unexplored. METHOD: Twenty-five inpatients were evaluated using the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents, Adolescent Version (DICA-R-A); the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children, Epidemiologic Version (K-SADS-E) (panic d

Parent-referred problem three-year-olds: developmental changes in symptoms.

Parent-referred problem three-yr-olds whose externalizing problems had improved by age six were compared with children whose problems persisted and with controls on symptom ratings obtained from mothers at ages three, four and six. Children who improved and those with persistent problems were initially rated high on overactivity, concentration difficulties and disobedience. Improved youngsters did not differ initially from controls on ratings of peer problems and other signs of antisocial behavior but children with persistent problems did. Groups also showed differential patterns of developmen

The predictors of parent reported behaviors related to olfactory information processing in children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous disorder with contradictory findings about smell detection function. It is not clear if the parent perceived behavior related to olfactory function is associated with age, gender, severity of ADHD, and cooccurring symptoms of anxiety and oppositional behavior in children with ADHD. METHODS: Participants were a clinical sample of 104 children and adolescents with ADHD using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria by a semi-structured interview. Parent perceived behavior related to olfactory processing function was assessed trough

Tourette syndrome: clinical characteristics and current management strategies.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a disorder comprised of involuntary motor and phonic tics often associated with psychiatric conditions. The etiology for TS is unclear, with both genetic and immunological theories being studied to date. When pharmacotherapy is considered by the patient and physician to be required, owing to either functional impairment from tics or comorbid psychiatric illness, dopamine receptor antagonists are commonly used. Our first-line agents for tic suppression include clonidine, guanfacine, clonazepam and baclofen. Should these agents be ineffective, we would recommend pimozid

Comorbidities in the mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy induced by intrahippocampal kainate.

OBJECTIVE: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is generally associated with cognitive and psychiatric comorbidities. Here we examined whether similar comorbidities are observed in mice injected with kainate in the dorsal hippocampus, a model known to recapitulate many features of human MTLE, and if these comorbidities are sex dependent. METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6 mice were unilaterally injected with kainate in the dorsal hippocampus (KA-MTLE), and hippocampal paroxysmal discharges were recorded over 2 months. Behavioral tests assessed food intake (Novelty Palatable Food Intake test), w
