Mechanisms of Tactile Sensory Phenotypes in Autism: Current Understanding and Future Directions for Research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to summarize the current body of behavioral, physiological, and molecular knowledge concerning tactile sensitivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with a focus on recent studies utilizing rodent models. RECENT FINDINGS: Mice with mutations in the ASD-related genes, Shank3, Fmr1, UBE3A, and Mecp2, display tactile abnormalities. Some of these abnormalities appear to be caused by mutation-related changes in the PNS, as opposed to changes in the processing of touch stimuli in the CNS, as previously thought. There is also growing evidence suggesting that peri

Risk of cerebrovascular adverse events and death in elderly patients with dementia when treated with antipsychotic medications: a literature review of evidence.

Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) are increasingly recognized as a major risk factor for caregiver burden, institutionalization, greater impairment in activities of daily living (ADLs), more rapid cognitive decline, and a poorer quality of life. BPSD contribute significantly to the direct and indirect costs of caring for patients with dementia even after adjusting for the severity of cognitive impairment and other co-morbidities. Research on these symptoms has indicated a complex interplay between the biological, psychological and social factors involved in the disease p

Oppositional defiant and conduct disorders: issues to be resolved for DSM-IV.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are reasonably distinct both in terms of statistical covariation among symptoms and ages of onset. The two disorders are related in similar ways to impairment and family history of antisocial behavior, but the association is stronger for CD than ODD. Virtually all clinic-referred youths with prepubertal onset of CD have retained the symptoms of ODD that emerged at earlier ages. Furthermore, a set of serious antisocial behaviors characteristically emerges at later ages in some youths with CD, suggesting further developmental progress

Management of early postdischarge adjustment reactions following psychiatric hospitalization.

Psychiatric patients frequently experience serious symptoms and demonstrate disturbed behaviors in the very early postdischarge period. Based on 25 years of clinical experience, the author reviews symptoms and behaviors that can occur and notes that they should most often be viewed as adjustment reactions rather than as exacerbations of the primary illness. A team approach to management of early postdischarge reactions that uses a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse is effective. Interventions include forewarning inpatients that problems may occur and helping them identify potential problems. S

Early childhood eating behaviors and adolescent eating disorders.

Maladaptive eating patterns were traced longitudinally in a large random sample of children. Pickiness and concern with weight were more common in girls than in boys, and the prevalence of pickiness declined with age. No age or sex differences in family contention around meals nor in bingeing were shown. All problem behaviors showed significant stability over the 10-year span studied, beginning at ages 1 to 10. Certain eating and digestive problems in early childhood were predictive of symptoms of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in adolescence. Findings regarding prospective risks implica

Chronic alcohol exposure parametric effects on anxiety- and pain-related behaviors in adult rats.

Many animal models of alcohol dependence utilize forced alcohol exposure, including chronic intermittent exposure to alcohol vapor, to induce high blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) and withdrawal-associated behaviors similar to those seen in clinical contexts. Chronic alcohol exposure and withdrawal are especially important in influencing the expression of negative symptoms (e.g., negative affect and pain), which, in turn, increase alcohol consumption. However, cessation of chronic alcohol vapor exposure does not always lead to those "canonical" withdrawal behaviors in rodents. Environmental

Valproic acid treated female Long-Evans rats are impaired on attentional set-shifting.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits, communication impairments, restrictive behaviors, and cognitive flexibility deficits. The valproic acid (VPA) model of autism has been widely used to examine changes in rodent behavior and neurobiology to better understand ASD. This study examined social and anxiety behavior as well as cognitive flexibility in VPA and control offspring. Results for social behavior were consistent with prior studies showing reduced sociability in VPA rats and increased self-grooming, which may be viewed as a repet

Investigating the Link between Narcissism and Problem Behaviors in Adolescence.

Previous research has shown that narcissistic traits such as exploitativeness, exhibitionism, and entitlement are associated with delinquency and aggression in childhood and adolescence. However, there is a paucity of longitudinal research examining these associations, and virtually no research examining other problem behaviors such as drug use and early sexual behavior. In this study, we extended previous research by testing whether two facets of narcissism, exploitativeness and superiority, assessed at age 14, predicted problem behaviors at age 16, while controlling for problem behaviors at

Gray matter covariations and core symptoms of autism: the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project.

BACKGROUND: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies in autism spectrum disorder (autism) have yielded diverging results. This might partly be attributed to structural alterations being associating with the combined influence of several regions rather than with a single region. Further, these structural covariation differences may relate to continuous measures of autism rather than with categorical case-control contrasts. The current study aimed to identify structural covariation alterations in autism, and assessed canonical correlations between brain covariation patterns and core autism symptoms

Investigating the transition of psychopathological symptoms from childhood to adolescence in maltreated youth: a cross sectional study.

INRTRODUCTION: The transition to adolescence is a crucial developmental phase in which notable and significant changes in behavior may emerge. Despite child maltreatment represents one of the most critical public health risk factors for mental health disorders, poor is known about possible differences in psychopathological symptoms between children and adolescents who experienced maltreatment. Using a cross-sectional, multi informant approach, this study had three objectives: (i) to examine age-related differences in psychopathological symptoms in maltreated children and adolescents using a mu

Convergent, discriminant, and known groups validity of the Behavioral Assessment Screening Tool (BAST) in chronic traumatic brain injury.

UNLABELLED: The Behavioral Assessment Screening Tool (BAST) measures self-reported neurobehavioral symptoms commonly experienced by adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI). To assess the convergent, discriminant, and known-groups validity of the BAST among community-dwelling adults with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI), we conducted correlation analyses and tests of group differences with previously validated symptom measures in two samples (n = 111, n = 134). Measures used for comparison were: Patient Health Questionnaire (depression), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (anxiety), Positive a…

An examination of adults with atypical anorexia nervosa at admission to treatment at higher levels of care: An attempt to increase diagnostic clarity.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious illness with a high mortality rate and multiple physiological complications. The vague definition of atypical AN allows for subjective interpretation. This retrospective study aimed to focus future research on the operational definition of atypical AN by examining four factors associated with atypical AN at admission to higher level of care treatment. METHODS: Adults with atypical AN (n = 69) were examined within sample analyses among four groups: (1) >10% versus ≤10% weight loss; (2) weight loss within the previous 3 months versus >3 months; (3)

The impact of psychopathology on academic performance in school-age children and adolescents.

Psychiatric symptoms have consistently been associated with negative educational outcomes. However, possible confounding variables, such as comorbid mental and environmental conditions, have not been well addressed. This study examined whether mental health problems were significantly linked to academic performance in a Spanish school-based sample, after adjustment for co-occurring psychiatric symptoms and multiple contextual factors. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding child's sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, type of school, socioeconomic status, ethnicity), stress

Antisocial Personality Disorder in Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder that worsens quality of life and functional impairment. Personality disorders (PDs), in particular Cluster B personality, have a high incidence among BD patients and is considered a poor prognostic factor. The study of this co-morbidity represents an important clinical and diagnostic challenge in psychiatry. Particularly, clinical overlap has been shown between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and BD that could worsen the course of both disorders. We aimed to detect the frequency of ASPD in bipolar patients

Developing and Validating a Definition of Impulsive/Reactive Aggression in Youth.

The goal of this study is to develop a rational data-driven definition of impulsive/reactive aggression and establish distinctions between impulsive/reactive aggression and other common childhood problems. This is a secondary analysis of data from Assessing Bipolar: A Community Academic Blend (ABACAB; N = 636, ages 5-18), Stanley Medical Research Institute N = 392, ages 5-17), and the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS; N = 679, ages 6-12) studies, which recruited youths seeking outpatient mental health services in academic medical centers and community clinics. [Agitation in neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia : beyond drugs].

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are present in a wide spectrum of psychological and physical manifestations and can sometimes be difficult to identify. Because agitation is the most visible and disturbing symptom, it leads to the most hospitalizations and institutionalizations. Identifying it early allows for the initiation of a multidisciplinary approach based on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, thereby reducing the negative impact on patients, their relatives, or their caregivers. The main goal is to improve the quality of life of patients and their

Beyond the Pelvis: Central Sensitization, Chronic Pain Syndromes, and Their Impact on Chronic Pelvic Pain.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) represents a complex condition where peripheral nociceptive drivers and central nervous system processes produce symptoms that extend beyond the pelvis. Central sensitization (CS) is a state of heightened neuronal responsiveness with amplified pain signaling and diminished inhibitory control, in which patients experience multifocal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognitive difficulties, and hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. Management of CS requires a multimodal and comprehensive approach, including pain neuroscience education, targeted pelvic physical therapy, a

Emergency Care for Persons Living with Dementia.

Assessments are available which can help to identify emergency department (ED) patients who may have dementia. Persons living with dementia (PLWD) have unique emergency care needs such as difficulties with activities of daily living and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. Multiple emergency care practices have shown improved outcomes for PLWD. Communication between clinicians and PLWD requires additional attention and should include care partners and other clinicians when possible. Transitions of care from the ED for PLWD are often problematic with poor outcomes. Interventions l

Hyperkinesia and early-onset dementia in a female with co-occurring PSEN1 and HTT mutations: A case report.

A middle-aged female with family history of early-onset dementia presented with progressive amnesia, behavioral dysregulation, and myoclonus. Workup revealed pathogenic PSEN1 variant and intermediate HTT allele (30 CAG repeats). This case illustrates that motor symptoms should not be neglected in early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (EOFAD). Moreover, hyperkinetic phenomenology does not reliably differentiate EOFAD and Huntington's disease (HD) due to the possibility of co-occurring mutations. Patients undergoing EOFAD evaluation should be screened for HD as well. Finally, this first case
