Linguistic validation of a questionnaire for the screening of OSAS in a paediatric population with Down Syndrome.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a common clinical condition in which the throat narrows or collapses repeatedly during sleep, causing obstructive sleep apnoea events. This disorder is present in the paediatric population with a prevalence estimated between 1.2% and 5.8%. Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal alteration associated with mental disability and characterised by other clinical manifestations, and its incidence is estimated at 1/800 births worldwide. Most of the craniofacial features typical of DS represent a risk factor for the development of OSAS. Routi

Executive Functions and Emotion Regulation in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Borderline Intellectual Disability.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the multiple relations and to determine the differences between executive functions (EFs), emotion regulation, and behavioral and emotional problems in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline intellectual disability (ID), and typical development (TD). The sample included 85 children aged 6 to 11 years, 42 with typical development (TD), 27 with ADHD, and 16 with borderline ID. The results emphasized a positive correlation between adaptive emotion regulation strategies and EFs, and no significant relations betwe

Violence against children perpetrated by peers: A cross-sectional school-based survey in Uganda.

Violence against children by peers is a global public health problem. We aimed to assess factors associated with peer violence victimization among primary school children in Uganda. We conducted multilevel multivariable logistic regression analyses of cross-sectional data from 3706 primary students in 42 Ugandan primary schools. Among primary school students, 29% and 34% had ever experienced physical and emotional violence perpetrated by their peers, respectively. Factors strongly associated with both physical and emotional violence were similar and overlapping, and included exposure to interp

Parenting a Child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Orofacial Pain, and Dysfunction: A Qualitative Study.

AIMS: To deepen knowledge of how parents of children diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) perceive the orofacial manifestations of the disease, its treatments, and their encounters with dental care providers. METHODS: A total of 15 interviews with parents of JIA patients (3 to 16 years old) with orofacial pain were analyzed according to classic grounded theory. RESULTS: The main problem was identified as controlling an unpredictable life situation that includes a child with JIA. To solve this main problem, the parent was trying to comprehend, help, and speak for the child with

Gonadal mosaicism in ARID1B gene causes intellectual disability and dysmorphic features in three siblings.

The gene encoding the AT-rich interaction domain-containing protein 1B (ARID1B) has recently been shown to be one of the most frequently mutated genes in patients with intellectual disability (ID). The phenotypic spectrums associated with variants in this gene vary widely ranging for mild to severe non-specific ID to Coffin-Siris syndrome. In this study, we evaluated three children from a consanguineous Emirati family affected with ID and dysmorphic features. Genomic DNA from all affected siblings was analyzed using CGH array and whole-exome sequencing (WES). Based on a recessive mode of inher

Thalamo-cortical connectivity: what can diffusion tractography tell us about reading difficulties in children?

Reading is an essential skill in modern society, but many people have deficits in the decoding and word recognition aspects of reading, a difficulty often referred to as dyslexia. The primary focus of neuroimaging studies to date in dyslexia has been on cortical regions; however, subcortical regions may also be important for explaining this disability. Here, we used diffusion tensor imaging to examine the association between thalamo-cortical connectivity and children's reading ability in 20 children with typically developed reading ability (age range 8-17/10-17 years old from two imaging cente

Validating rationale of group-level component analysis based on estimating number of sources in EEG through model order selection.

This study addresses how to validate the rationale of group component analysis (CA) for blind source separation through estimating the number of sources in each individual EEG dataset via model order selection. Control children, typically reading children with risk for reading disability (RD), and children with RD participated in the experiment. Passive oddball paradigm was used for eliciting mismatch negativity during EEG data collection. Data were cleaned by two digital filters with pass bands of 1-30 Hz and 1-15 Hz and a wavelet filter with the pass band narrower than 1-12 Hz. Three model o

Seven- to eight-year follow-up of the CoolCap trial of head cooling for neonatal encephalopathy.

INTRODUCTION: We sought to determine whether 18- to 22-mo neurodevelopmental outcomes predicted functional outcomes at 7-8 y for survivors of the CoolCap study of therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. RESULTS: WeeFIM ratings were completed at 7-8 y of age on 62 (32 cooled; 30 standard care) of 135 surviving children who had had neurodevelopmental assessment at 18 mo. There was 1 refusal, 58 lost to follow-up, and 14 children whose centers declined to participate. Disability status at 18 mo was strongly associated with WeeFIM ratings (P < 0.001); there was

Fetal alcohol syndrome prevention: annual and cumulative cost savings.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a common developmental disability. FAS is thought to be 100% preventable. While this is a theoretical truth, a prevention rate of 100% appears unlikely in the near future. However, several prevention strategies are available. In this paper, we examine the potential cost savings from prevention of one case of FAS each year in the state of North Dakota. We utilized the North Dakota Health Claims Database to examine annual cost of health care for children birth through 21 years of age with FAS and controls. The mean annual cost of health care for children birth thr

Intoeing--fact, fiction and opinion.

Intoeing in children is a common cause of parental concern. A normal neurologic examination and normal height and weight for age help the physician exclude most associated skeletal dysplasias, and neuromuscular or metabolic diseases. Three causes of intoeing affect otherwise normal newborns and infants. Metatarsus adductus is the diagnosis if a "C" shaped curve, rather than a straight border, is present on the lateral aspect of the foot. About 90 percent of cases resolve by one year of age. Internal tibial torsion, although a normal finding in the newborn, is usually a matter of concern at wal

Adaptation and validation of the European Portuguese Communication and Symbolic Behaviour Scales Developmental Profile™ (CSBS DP™) Infant-Toddler Checklist.

BACKGROUND: As delays or disorders in early language and communication are the most prevalent symptom in children with disabilities, early screening is crucial to promote prevention, early diagnosis, and intervention. However, to the best of our knowledge, no screening tool is available for the joint assessment of early language and social communication skills in European Portuguese (EP)-learning children, which is critical for screening, monitoring and enrolment in appropriate early intervention services. AIMS: (1) To adapt and validate the EP version of the Communication and Symbolic Behavi…

Functional profiles of children with cerebral palsy in Jordan based on the association between gross motor function and manual ability.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of physical disability in childhood. A major challenge for delivering effective services for children with CP is the heterogeneity of the medical condition. Categorizing children into homogeneous groups based on functional profiles is expected to improve service planning. The aims of this study were to (1) to describe functional profiles of children with CP based on the Gross Motor Function Classification System-Expanded & Revised (GMFCS-E & R) and the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS); and (2) to examine associations and agree

Molecular Etiology of Hereditary Single-Side Deafness: Its Association With Pigmentary Disorders and Waardenburg Syndrome.

Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (USNHL)/single-side deafness (SSD) is a frequently encountered disability in children. The etiology of a substantial portion of USNHL/SSD still remains unknown, and genetic causes have not been clearly elucidated. In this study, the authors evaluated the heritability of USNHL/SSD.The authors sequentially recruited 50 unrelated children with SSD. For an etiologic diagnosis, we performed a rigorous review on the phenotypes of family members of all children and conducted, if necessary, molecular genetic tests including targeted exome sequencing of 129 deafnes

Pre-existing adversity, level of child protection involvement, and school attendance predict educational outcomes in a longitudinal study.

Maltreatment largely occurs in a multiple-risk context. The few large studies adjusting for confounding factors have raised doubts about whether low educational achievement results from maltreatment or co-occurring risk factors. This study examined prevalence, risk and protective factors for low educational achievement among children involved with the child protection system compared to other children. We conducted a population-based record-linkage study of children born in Western Australia who sat national Year 3 reading achievement tests between 2008 and 2010 (N=46,838). The longitudinal st
