We devised an in vivo biological assay for ovarian growth inhibiting activity to examine extracts of human pregnancy urine for the presence of ovarian growth inhibiting factor. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) capsules were implanted sc in immature hypophysectomized female rats; FSH was injected sc with or without test substance for 5 days. A single dose of ethane dimethane sulphonate (EDS) given to adult male rats has a specific destructive effects on Leydig cells, which are removed from the intertubular area by macrophages. A case of metastatic placental-site trophoblastic tumor (trophoblastic pseudotumor) is presented and compared to four previously reported cases. Chemotherapy with MAC (methotrexate, dactinomycin, cyclophosphamide), aggressive surgical debulking, and radiotherapy were ineffective in producing disease regression. Only two of the four similar cases in the literature showed short responses (4-7 months) to several different aggressive multiagent chemotherapy regimens. Optimal therapeutic outcome is likely to result from an early diagnosis and aggressive surgical treatment of localized tumor.

The histology of 51 cases of testicular teratoma, with or without seminoma, was reviewed and classified according to the World Health Organization criteria. Full pathological and clinical details were obtained, and patients were followed up for periods varying from one to 10 years from orchidectomy. Multiple factors were studied in order to discover which affected prognosis. The pathological stage of the tumour proved to be the most important indicator. The previously described poor prognosis associated with yolk sac tumour was not confirmed.

The hormonal profile of estrogen-secreting Leydig cell tumors was studied in four patients. We evaluate five tests developed for the earlier detection of pregnancy, either in the clinical laboratory or by the patient in her home. These tests offer no advantage over other urinary pregnancy tests, and the results are distinctly inferior to those reported (Clin. Chem. 29: 561-563, 1983) for some serum tests for pregnancy.

We have investigated the ability of chemically deglycosylated ovine pituitary lutropin (DGLH) to stimulate cyclic AMP accumulation in rat interstitial cells in vitro.
