This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on psychological interventions with empirical evidence of efficacy in treating common psychiatric and behavioral disorders in people with intellectual disability (ID) at all stages of their life. We begin with a brief presentation of what is meant by psychiatric and behavioral disorders in this population, along with an explanation of some of the factors that contribute to the increased psychosocial vulnerability of this group to present with these problems. We then conduct a review of empirically supported psychological therapies used to treat

Sporadic Creutzfeld Jakob Disease is a rare disease with diagnostic challenges. While there is very little human data regarding this disease, some studies have indicated that certain medications may be useful in slowing its progression. Case study data implies psychiatric and cognitive symptoms preceding the diagnosis. This single case report presents a 68-year-old male with suspected late-onset bipolar disorder, later found to have sporadic Creutzfeld Jakob Disease. The patient was treated with lithium for this purported bipolar disorder. Approximately 2 years later, the patient met the Cente

Fear is an ancestral emotion, an intrinsic defensive response present in every organism. Although fear is an evolutionarily advantageous emotion, under certain pathologies such as panic disorder it might become exaggerated and non-adaptive. Clinical and preclinical work pinpoints that changes in cognitive processes, such as perception and interpretation of environmental stimuli that rely on brain regions responsible for high-level function, are essential for the development of fear-related disorders. This review focuses on the involvement of cognitive function to fear circuitry disorders. More

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive performance in trauma-exposed populations, such as combat Veterans, has been shown to be worse than in nonexposed peers. However, cognitive performance has typically been within the normal range (within 1 SD of normative mean), and the prevalence of clinically significant cognitive dysfunction (i.e., performance more than 1 SD below the mean on multiple measures in a domain) in younger adults with trauma exposure remains unknown. The objective of our study was to measure this.
METHOD: We applied Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5) cutoff

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and bipolar disorders (BD) are severe mental disorders linked to brain alterations in the limbic system. Small, anatomically complex structures remain unexplored in morphological studies of these disorders. We examined case-control differences in MRI-derived brain volumes of the fornix, nucleus accumbens, basal forebrain, septal nuclei, hypothalamus, and mammillary bodies, and their associations with clinical characteristics, sex, and cognition.
STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional sample of 1604 participants (802 healthy controls (HC), 462 patien

OBJECTIVE: A hypermentalizing impairment, or tendency to overattribute mental states to others, has been identified among individuals with borderline personality disorder. However, associations between hypermentalizing and other disorders call into question the specificity of this impairment to borderline personality disorder. This study aimed to evaluate the relative strength of the association between hypermentalizing and borderline personality disorder compared with other disorders and to assess the impact of moderators on the relationship between hypermentalizing and psychopathology.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a class of environmental toxicants that interfere with the endocrine system, resulting in developmental malformations, reproductive disorders, and alterations to immune and nervous system function. The emergence of screening studies identifying these chemicals in fetal developmental matrices such as maternal blood, placenta and amniotic fluid has steered research focus towards elucidation of in utero effects of exposure to these chemicals, as their capacity to cross the placenta and reach the fetus was established. The presence of EDCs, a majority of w

Dopamine (DA) is a key neurotransmitter that regulates neuropsychological behaviors, including movement, emotion, motivation, and cognition. Dysregulation of dopaminergic signaling is linked to psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and schizophrenia. The dopamine transporter (DAT) controls DA levels by facilitating its reuptake from the synaptic cleft, terminating dopaminergic signaling. Here, we report structures of full-length human DAT (hDAT) in its apo state and in complexes with substrates and antidepressant compounds. The antidepressant c

Embodied and embedded cognition (EEC) theory proposes that language and cognitive development emerge from bodily interactions with the environment, yet empirical tests of this claim in clinical developmental populations remain rare. This mini-review synthesizes behavioral, electrophysiological, and structural neuroimaging evidence from children with serious early motor disorders-obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita-which restrict upper limb movement from birth or before, providing a unique opportunity to test EEC predictions in a motor-restricted population. The neuroimmune system, an extensive bidirectional communication system between neural cells and immune cells, utilizes evolutionarily conserved molecules, including cytokines, chemokines and trophic factors that participate as mediators in both directions. While the initial discovery of classic immune molecules in the brain was interpreted as neuroinflammation, a broad literature demonstrates their essential roles in cognition during homeostatic brain function. These mechanisms include neural correlates of learning and memory, such as strengthening of neuronal networks and the generation of n

BACKGROUND: Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, are key regulators of synaptic plasticity and neural circuit homeostasis.
MAIN BODY: This review summarizes the mechanisms by which microglia shape synaptic structure and function, including dynamic synaptic interactions, selective pruning, epigenetic regulation, extracellular matrix remodeling, metabolic adaptation, and communication with other glial cells. Under physiological conditions, these processes support circuit refinement, synaptic stability, and cognition, which are modulated by circadian rhythms and th

The prevalence of depressive disorders continues to increase, representing a leading contributor to global disability and disease burden. Although antidepressants remain the cornerstone of treatment, their variable efficacy and adverse effects have drawn increasing attention. Vascular homeostasis is tightly regulated by the dynamic balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis, processes essential for maintaining physiological integrity. Emerging evidence indicates that antidepressants, beyond their effects on mood and cognition, may modulate endothelial function, platelet activity, and the coa

Direct projections from the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) to the medial frontal cortex (MFC) play crucial roles in memory and emotional regulation. Using anterograde transsynaptic tracing and ex vivo electrophysiology in male mice, we document a previously unexplored pathway that parallels the established vHPC-MFC connectivity. This pathway connects the dorsal-caudal hippocampus (dcHPC) to specific subregions of the ventral MFC (vMFC), in particular the dorsal peduncular cortex. Notably, this pathway exerts a strong inhibitory influence on vMFC by targeting a substantial proportion of inhibitory

Protein-protein interactions underlie core brain functions, including neurotransmitter release, receptor activation, and intracellular signaling essential for learning, memory, and cognition. Here, we systematically map conserved brain protein interactions across five vertebrate species-rabbit, chicken, dolphin, pig, and mouse-using co-fractionation and immunoprecipitation mass spectrometry. From 2,197 biochemical fractions, we identify over 81,000 high-confidence interactions among 6,108 conserved proteins. This interaction map (VerteBrain) reveals both regulatory and structural complexes, in

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a significant neurological complication in aging perioperative patients that impacts post-operative cognition. PND is currently diagnosed through cognitive function testing, which is limited by its subjectivity and time requirements. Thus, the identification of biomarkers to assess PND onset is a priority to identify at-risk individuals and enable interventions and treatments to patient outcomes. This article synthesizes expert perspectives on brain aging and PND, presents the latest clinical evidence on PND biomarkers (imaging, electroencephalogr

Within the prefrontal-cingulate cortex, abnormalities in coupling between neuronal networks can disturb the emotion-cognition interactions, contributing to the development of mental disorders such as depression. Despite this understanding, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain elusive. In this study, we present a biophysical computational model encompassing three crucial regions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. The objective is to investigate the role of coupling relationships withi

Oxytocin and vasopressin share a similar chemical structure but have different functions. Both hormones are produced in different brain areas, are transported through the hypophyseal portal system, pass to the anterior hypophysis, and released to reach their target organs. These hormones also act as neuromodulators, where its receptors are found in the lateral septum, the middle amygdala, the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the brain stem. These brain structures regulate socio-sexual behaviors in vertebrates. Moreover, the oxytocinergic and the vasopressin systems are sexually different. Th

Increased variability in cognitive scores, mood or personality traits can be indicative of underlying neurological disorders. Whether variability in cognition is due to changes in mood or personality is unknown. A total of 66 younger adults, 51 healthy older adults and 38 participants with cognitive impairment completed 21 daily sessions of attention, working memory, mood, and personality assessment. Group differences in mean performance and variability were examined using Bayesian mixed effects location scale models. Variability in attention decreased from younger to older adults and then inc
