ABT-126 is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist that is selective for the α7 subtype of the receptor. nAChRs are thought to play a role in a variety of neurocognitive processes and have been a pharmacologic target for disorders with cognitive impairment, including schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. As part of the preclinical safety package for ABT-126, its potential for abuse was assessed. While the involvement of the α4β2 subtype of the nicotinic receptor in the addictive properties of nicotine has been demonstrated, the role of the α7 receptor has been studied much less ext

RATIONALE: Numerous psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with differences in visual perception, and it has been proposed that the treatment of these differences may represent a novel means to treat disorders like schizophrenia. Unfortunately, few methods exist to study visual perception in pre-clinical species.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to adapt a task of visual integration by proximity with relevance to schizophrenia to a rodent touchscreen environment to determine the effects of glutamatergic and GABAergic compounds. In this way, we

Prenatal alcohol treatment (PA) produces a decrease in dopaminergic neuron activity in the ventral tegmental area, an alteration that is alleviated with methylphenidate treatment. Evidence exists that PA also produces hyperactivity, inattention and enhanced impulsivity, behavioral alterations that have been related to dopaminergic and noradrenergic functions. The purpose of this work was to study the effects of methylphenidate and atomoxetine on impulsivity and motor activity in preadolescent male rats prenatally exposed to alcohol. Pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to either alcohol or an iso

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect people in the bottom billion poorest in the world. These diseases are concentrated in rural areas, conflict zones and urban slums in Africa and other tropical areas. While the World Health Organization recognizes seventeen priority NTDs, the list of conditions present in Africa and elsewhere that are eligible to be classified as NTDs is much longer. Although NTDs are generally marginalized, their associated neurological burden has been almost completely disregarded. However, reports indicate that trichuriasis, schistosomiasis and hookworm infection, am

OBJECTIVE: Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are often based on motor- and/or sensory processes that are known to be impaired in late stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We propose a novel BCI designed for patients in late stages of ALS that only requires high-level cognitive processes to transmit information from the user to the BCI.
APPROACH: We trained subjects via EEG-based neurofeedback to self-regulate the amplitude of gamma-oscillations in the superior parietal cortex (SPC). We argue that parietal gamma-oscillations are likely to be associated with high-level attentiona

This retrospective chart-review study examined patient-level correlates of initiation and completion of evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among treatment-seeking U.S. veterans. We identified all patients (N = 796) in a large Veterans Affairs PTSD and anxiety clinic who attended at least 1 individual psychotherapy appointment with 1 of 8 providers trained in EBP. Within this group, 91 patients (11.4%) began EBP (either Cognitive Processing Therapy or Prolonged Exposure) and 59 patients (7.9%) completed EBP. The medical records of all EBP patients (n = 9

BACKGROUND: Clinicians lack adequate data on the effectiveness of treatment for pathological gambling in low- and middle-income countries.
METHODS: We evaluated a manualized treatment program that included components of cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and imaginal exposure in a sample of 128 participants diagnosed with pathological gambling. Our team recruited participants via the helpline of the National Responsible Gambling Program (NRGP) of South Africa between May 2011 and February 2012. Eligible participants, who met the DSM-IV-TR criteria for pathological gambli

Human-human interactions are of central relevance for the success in professional and occupational environments, which also substantially influence quality of life. This is especially true in the case of individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA), who experience deficits in social cognition that often lead to social exclusion and unemployment. Despite good education and high motivation, individuals with HFA do not reach employment rates that are substantially higher than 50 %. This is an alarmingly high rate of unemployment considering that the United Nations have recently emphasized the i

Each year in the United States, individuals who lack decision-making capacity because of acute or chronic cognitive impairment are in situations in which important medical decisions must be made for them, but tens of thousands of these individuals have no known family members or designated surrogates available to help with those decisions. Such individuals constitute 16% of patients in intensive care units, 3% of nursing home residents, and a large but unspecified number of individuals in a variety of settings who are facing end-of-life decisions. Several approaches are currently used to aid i

BACKGROUND: Cognitive bias modification (CBM) is a novel treatment for anxiety disorders that utilizes computerized tasks to train attention and interpretation biases away from threat. To date, attitudes toward and acceptability of CBM have not been systematically examined.
METHOD: We conducted qualitative interviews with 10 anxious primary care patients to examine attitudes toward and initial impressions of CBM. Interviews explored general impressions, as well as reactions to the treatment rationale and two computer programs, one targeting attention bias and one targeting interpretation bias

PURPOSE: To investigate the use of different modes of transport and long-term changes among stroke survivors with cognitive functional limitations (CFLs), and to study differences among sub-groups (decreased/ceased vs. unchanged and increased public transport use) regarding physical functional limitations (PFLs), CFLs, depression, and social activity outside home.
METHOD: Survey of 79 individuals living in the community with CFLs post-stroke (mean 26 months). Well-established and study-specific instruments were used capturing the mode of transport use, CFLs (professionally assessed and self-r

OBJECTIVE: As the levels of care within long-term nursing care regulations are defined according to limitations in performing fundamental activities of daily living, the extent to which medically diagnosed cognitive, emotional and behavioral dementia symptoms are taken into account in the grading, should be investigated.
METHOD: 390 patients with mild to moderate dementia from the Mid-Franconia region, were included into the IDA ("Initiative Demenzversorgung in Allgemeinmedizin") study by specially trained general practitioners. The GPs had diagnosed dementia and noted the accompanying signs

The goals of these two studies were to assess the acceptability and feasibility as well as to gather preliminary efficacy data on a modified combination cognitive behavioral (CBT) and attachment based family therapy (ABFT) for adolescents (ages 12-18), with the primary diagnosis of generalized (GAD), social phobia (SP), and separation (SAD) anxiety disorders. In Phase I, CBT was modified for an adolescent population and ABFT was modified for working with anxious adolescents in combination with CBT. Therapists were trained for both conditions and eight patients were treated as an open trial pil

Daytime sleepiness and impaired cognitive function can be a consequence of recurrent transient arousal from sleep, associated with abrupt changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG). EEG is normally assessed by trained observers from paper records, but automation offers the advantages of speed and objectivity. We assessed 10 automated indices of EEG activity as potential indicators of arousal. Arousals from light, slow wave and rapid eye movement sleep were studied in 30 subjects. Segments of EEG recorded immediately before and after each arousal were analyzed by automated measurement of 10 EEG

Reporting errors are an unavoidable reality for any active, practicing radiologist. However, they can be minimised through open discussion, meticulous training, and openness to feedback. In an era marked by escalating imaging volumes, complex caseloads, and systemic workforce burnout, achieving an error-free practice is a statistical impossibility; baseline radiological error rates are estimated in the literature to range between 3% and 5% for decades. However, this reality should not deter radiologists from pursuing continuous diagnostic refinement. This article explores the intricate cogniti

BACKGROUND: Children with specific learning disabilities (SLD) often experience difficulties in activities of daily living that are essential for independence. Fine motor skills, particularly under dual-task conditions, are crucial for facilitating participation in these activities. This study compared fine motor performance under single and dual-task conditions between children with SLD and their typically developing peers, and examined the associations between task performance and participation in activities of daily living.
METHODS: A total of 124 elementary students, including children wi

PURPOSE: To evaluate diagnostic accuracy and patterns of errors among junior neurology residents evaluating acute presentations of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a morning-report case log of overnight neurology consultations presented by postgraduate year-2 residents at a New York academic center over 6 years. Cases with an initial resident impression of multiple sclerosis/demyelinating disease or a final diagnosis of multiple sclerosis/demyelinating disease were analyzed using a predefined localization-etiology schema.
RESULTS: Amon

The loss of somatosensory feedback in transtibial amputees contributes to gait asymmetry, increased metabolic cost, higher fall risk, and dependence on visual cues. Sensory neuroprostheses, both invasive and non-invasive, provide methods to restore aspects of this feedback and enhance functional mobility. This review combines recent findings from invasive procedures, such as intraneural electrodes, spinal cord stimulation, and agonist-antagonist myoneural constructs, with non-invasive electrotactile, mechanotactile, and vibrotactile techniques. Invasive systems offer high-quality somatotopic m

Modern medical education increasingly emphasizes deep learning, professional identity formation (PIF), and longitudinal competency development. The tea-steeping metaphor, drawn from the gradual infusion process of tea leaves into water, offers a novel lens to conceptualize immersive and time-dependent learning. This metaphor holds particular relevance in forensic medicine, where learners must develop a nuanced understanding of medico-legal principles, ethical reasoning, and procedural competence over time. Objective of this article is to explore the origin, educational applications, benefits,
