Dupuytren's contracture shares certain properties with malignant tumours, characterized by proliferation and lack of apoptosis, which may be induced by the c-myc oncogene. Because of these similarities, the relationship between the c-myc oncogene expression, bcl-2 oncogene (anti-apoptotic gene) and proliferation was investigated in Dupuytren's disease. Defects in the ryanodine receptor (RYR1) gene are associated with malignant hyperthermia (MH), an autosomal dominant disorder of skeletal muscle and one of the main causes of death resulting from anaesthesia. Susceptibility to MH (MHS) is determined by the level of tension generated in an in vitro muscle contracture test (IVCT) in response to caffeine and halothane. Excitable porcine gracilis muscle samples were subjected to an in vitro caffeine test. Muscle samples were taken from pig carcasses or as biopsy from anaesthetized and halothane tested pigs. The charts of 166 patients with major arterial injuries (175 arterial repairs) inflicted during periods of peace and war time were reviewed.
