To investigate causes of contact dermatitis in the metal spray process in a film-condenser factory, we developed a questionnaire survey for workers exposed to metal dust, analyzed the metal dust, and conducted patch tests with the metal dust and its constituents. In the questionnaire survey, we identified 12 workers (12/26, 46.2%) who had had dermatitis. The main symptoms were itching, itchy red skin and itchy papules. Analysis of the metal dust showed that there was no copper oxide, but nickel, not contained in the materials of the metal spray, was detected. One worker with dermatitis had a p

AIMS: The survival of two collection Lactobacillus casei and L. paracasei bacteriophages when subjected to thermal and chemical treatments was investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thermal resistance was evaluated by heating phage suspensions at 63, 72 and 90 degrees C in three different media [Tris-magnesium gelatin (TMG) buffer: 10 mmol l(-1) Tris-Cl, 10 mmol l(-1) MgSO(4) and 0.1% w/v gelatin; Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) broth and reconstituted nonfat dry skim milk (RSM)]. A marked heat sensitivity was evident in both phages, as 15 min at 72 degrees C was enough to completely inactivate (6 log(10

CONTEXT: The intentional use of Bacillus anthracis transmitted via the US mail in October-November 2001 resulted in 22 people developing inhalation or cutaneous anthrax. Glove use with handwashing prior to and after contact with potential contaminated environmental surfaces and cutaneous lesions has been recommended. However, only limited data are available on the susceptibility of B anthracis to antiseptics.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of several hand antiseptics (interventions) and soap and water (control) against Bacillus atrophaeus, a surrogate of B anthracis.

Several cases of occupational HIV transmission during surgical procedures have been reported all over the world in the last few years. Orthopaedic surgeons are at particularly high risk for blood contamination and skin injuries. This article addresses the risk of HIV transmission in the surgical setting with a focus on specific risk factors: the prevalence of the infection in general population, the stage of the disease, virulence, inoculum size, the nature and frequency of blood contacts. It also shows how the last two factors depend on surgical specialty, duration and kind of the procedure,

OBJECTIVE: To compare the maternal outcome, in terms of postpartum infection, of deliveries conducted by trained traditional birth attendants (TBAs) with those conducted by untrained birth attendants.
METHODS: The study took place in a rural area of Bangladesh where a local NGO (BRAC) had previously undertaken TBA training. Demographic surveillance in the study site allowed the systematic identification of pregnant women. Pregnant women were recruited continuously over a period of 18 months. Data on the delivery circumstances were collected shortly after delivery while data on postpartum morb

BACKGROUND: Sewage treatments are not efficient to eliminate enteric microorganisms. Viruses are able to persist and are discharged into the marine environment with treated effluents. Few data are now available on the magnitude and the contributive processes of marine viral contamination. This work evaluates the relationship between the magnitude of rainfall and the viral contamination of the marine environment during winter epidemics of gastroenteritis in human coastal populations.
METHODS: A RT-PCR method was used to detect enterovirus, hepatitis A virus, Norwalk-like virus, astrovirus and

BACKGROUND: The blood lead concentrations of workers in lead battery factories are more than 4 times higher than those of the general population in Taiwan. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce lead exposure in this high-risk population. A health promotion program on personal habits that reduce lead exposure has been carried out in a lead battery factory since 1991. This study investigated the longitudinal relationship of workers' blood lead concentrations and personal hygiene habits from 1991 through 1997.
METHODS: In each of the 7 years of the study, occupational physicians questioned wor

Microglia in primary afferent projection territories are activated and proliferate after peripheral nerve injury. However, it is not known whether stimulation of peripheral nerves by noxious stimuli applied to their receptive fields activates microglial cells in the spinal cord. This study was designed to investigate the response of microglia in the lumbar spinal cord and in the brainstem to a tonic noxious stimulus. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats received subcutaneous injections of 5% formalin (50 microliter) into the plantar surface of the right hind paw, and 24 rats were injected with

Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes were able to grow for a period of 2 days in fresh chicken manure at 20 degrees C with a resulting 1-2 log units increase in CFU; Salmonella typhimurium remained stable. Prolongation of the storage time to 6 days resulted in a 1-2 log decreases of S. typhimurium compared to the initial count and a 3-4 log decrease of E. coli O157:H7; the number of L. monocytogenes did not decrease below the initial. These changes were accompanied by an increase in pH and accumulation of ammonia in the manure. The destruction of the three microorganisms was gre

BACKGROUND: Thermal treatment and copper-silver ionization are often used for controlling Legionella pneumophila in high-volume hospital plumbing systems, although the comparative efficacies of these measures in high-volume systems are unknown.
METHODS: Thermal treatment of a hot water circuit was accomplished by flushing hot water (> 60 degrees C) through distal fixtures for 10 minutes. Copper-silver ionization was conducted in three circuits by installing units into return lines immediately upstream from hot water tanks. Recovery rates of L. pneumophila were monitored by culturing swab samp

The long latency time, without any characteristic clinical sign, of transmissible degenerative encephalopathies, the transmissibility of the called "prion" infectious agent, associated with its exceptional resistance to normal inactivation methods, are resulting in accidental transmissions, both human (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), and animal (bovine spongiform encephalopathy). Among data about physical and chemical inactivation methods tested, we retain, to avoid professional or iatrogenic transmissions in the laboratory or in hospital, steam autoclaving and sodium hypochlorite or hydroxide tre

Recent reports of outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness, such as cryptosporidiosis, associated with visits to farms have drawn attention to the possible risks of acquiring zoonotic infections through contact with farm animals. These risks seem to be small, but it is important that people who work in urban and rural farms, and such establishments as animal sanctuaries where the general public can come into close contact with farm livestock and other animals, should be alerted to the simple precautions needed to prevent transmission of infections.

Hospital (nosocomial) infection means infection acquired by patients while they are in hospital, or by members of hospital staff. It will occur in modes of three categories; 1) cross-infection (infection acquired in hospital from other people, either patients or staff), 2) self-infection (infection caused by microbes which the patient carries on normal or infected areas of his own body) and 3) self-infection after acquisition of hospital pathogens from other people or the environment. Examples of hospital infections, that we experienced, were presented as follows; cross-infection due to gram-n

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) is the cornerstone of periodontitis management. This comparative clinical study evaluates the effectiveness of three different non-surgical treatment approaches in three treatment groups, namely, Quadrant-wise Scaling and Root Surface Debridement (Q-Sc + RSD), Full-mouth Disinfection (FMDis), and Full-mouth Debridement (FMDeb).
METHODS: A total of 45 patients with generalised stage II and III periodontitis were randomly assigned to one of the three treatment groups. Plaque scores (PS), bleeding scores (BS) and probing pocket depths (PD) were

BACKGROUND: Cholera, a severe diarrheal disease transmitted through contaminated water and food, poses a significant public health threat, particularly in vulnerable populations. Inadequate knowledge and poor hygiene practices are major drivers of its transmission. This study aimed to assess cholera knowledge and handwashing practices among residents of the Hayayaabe Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Borama, Somaliland.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the Hayayaabe IDP camp (500 households) between April and June 2024. Data were collected from 251 ra

Aquatic microplastics (MPs) act as reservoirs for microbial communities, fostering the formation of a mobile resistome encompassing diverse antibiotic (ARGs) and biocide/metal resistance genes (BMRGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). This collective genetic repertoire, referred to as the "plastiome," can potentially perpetuate environmental antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Our study examining two Japanese rivers near Tokyo revealed that waterborne MPs are primarily composed of polyethylene and polypropylene fibers and sheets of diverse origin. Clinically important genera like Exiguobacteriu

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections are prevalent in low- and middle-income countries and may be reduced through proper hand hygiene (HH) adherence during patient care.
AIM: We produced and distributed alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) to 19 public primary- and secondary-level healthcare facilities in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and carried out HH observations to assess healthcare workers' (HCWs) HH adherence, and to identify factors associated with this practice. HH adherence was defined as washing hands with soap and water or using ABHR.
METHODS: Observations were conducted before (202
