Cronobacter spp. is an important foodborne pathogen that causes serious neonatal infections. The prevalence of the colistin resistance gene mcr-9 in Cronobacter spp. strains isolated from foods has been reported; however, there are no reports for isolates from clinical infections. Surveillance of Cronobacter infection was conducted at a prominent children's hospital in China during 2015-2023 and also in a tertiary hospital in 2023. There were a total of seven Cronobacter sakazakii infection cases, and mcr-9.1 was detected in one ST13 and two ST256 strains. After adding the publicly available s

The rapid increase in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections, along with the cross-resistance of CRKP to other antibiotics, has created an urgent need for novel therapeutic agents. Among the potential options for next-generation antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) show great promise. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial activity against CRKP of an antibacterial peptide named Cecropin-4 (Cec4), which we successfully identified previously. Our results demonstrate that Cec4 not only exhibits rapid antibacterial activity but

The Citrobacter genus has emerged as an opportunistic pathogen in foodborne diarrhea outbreaks, as evidenced by two incidents in East China between 2022 and 2023. This study investigated the role of Citrobacter portucalensis and Citrobacter freundii in these outbreaks through a combination of epidemiological, metagenomic, and bioinformatic analyses. Our findings highlighted that C. portucalensis from the diarrhea outbreak harbored unique blaCMY-39 resistance genes and exhibited a distinct profile of virulence genes associated with motility, characterized by the absence of flagellar export chap

The increasing prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex (CREC) poses great challenges to infection treatment in the clinical setting. In this study, we reported the emergence of carbapenemase in a rare species, Enterobacter chuandaensis, belonging to the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC). We elucidated the genetic characteristics of carbapenem-resistant isolate FAHZZU5885, co-harboring blaNDM-1 and blaKPC-2. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis were used to identify E.

The intensification of aquaculture has led to a rise in fish infections, necessitating the search for alternative antibiotics. In this context, our study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with Chaetomorpha aerea, a filamentous green algae, on the immune health and resistance to infections in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). Diets containing varying concentrations of C. aerea (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 g/kg) were prepared and administered to the fish for 30 days, followed by a challenge with Edwardsiella tarda to evaluate survival rates. The results were significant. The diet conta

Nosocomial infections caused by multidrug-resistant enterobacteria have become a major challenge in global public health. Previous studies have indicated that use of antibiotics in livestock production chains is linked to the rising threat of antibiotic resistance in humans. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the distribution of genes encoding resistance to tetracycline, β-lactams, and colistin in multidrug-resistant enterobacteria isolated from feces of weaned pigs. Ninety-four enterobacteria isolates were submitted to antibiotic susceptibility test by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

Previous studies demonstrated that ursolic acid (UA) present in apple pomace displays antimicrobial activity against some microorganisms, but the underlying mechanisms associated with this activity remain unexplored. Furthermore, there are no reports on the effect of UA on carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP). This study examined the antimicrobial activity and mode of action of UA against CRKP was examined. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of UA against CRKP was determined by the agar dilution method. Variations in the intracellular pH (pHin), ATP concentration, and cell mem

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Glossina sp.) refractory to trypanosome infection are currently being explored as potential tools to contribute in the control of human and animal African trypanosomiasis. One approach to disrupt trypanosome transmission by the tsetse fly vector involves the use of paratransgenesis, a technique that aims to reduce vector competence of disease vectors via genetic modification of their microbiota. An important prerequisite for developing paratransgenic tsetse flies is the stable repopulation of tsetse flies and their progeny with its genetically modified Sodalis symbion

BACKGROUND: Gram-negative surgical site infections (SSI) following spine surgery are becoming increasingly more common owing to a broad perioperative antibiotic usage targeting gram-positive organisms. Enterobacter species have been reported to be the most common gram-negative bacteria following spine surgery.
METHODS: We queried our institutional database for Enterobacter SSIs after spine surgery at a single institution from 2009-2016. Relevant demographic, clinical, and operative variables were collected. We compared this cohort to patients who had non-Enterobacter SSI during the same perio

Bacterial phosphothreonine lyases have been identified to be type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors that irreversibly dephosphorylate host mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling to promote infection. However, the effects of phosphothreonine lyase on nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling remain largely unknown. In this study, we detected significant phosphothreonine lyase-dependent p65 degradation during Edwardsiella piscicida infection in macrophages, and this degradative effect was blocked by the protease inhibitor MG132. Further analysis revealed that phosphothreonine lyase prom
