In this article we review the existing evidence on the cognitive impact of interictal epileptiform EEG discharges. Such cognitive impairment occurs exclusively in direct relation to episodes of epileptiform EEG discharges and must be distinguished from (post) ictal seizure effects and from the nonperiodic long-term "stable" interictal effects caused by the clinical syndrome or the underlying etiology. A number of previous studies have suggested that melanin may play a role in Ca2+ homeostasis of endolymph. In the present study, endolymph Ca2+ levels and endocochlear potential (EP) were measured in all four cochlear turns of pigmented or albino guinea pigs. Auditory sensitivity was also evaluated using cochlear action potential (AP) thresholds. In pigmented animals we found that endolymph Ca2+ tended to increase from base to apex of the cochlea, while EP systematically decreased towards the apex. In contrast, no significant Ca2+ gradient was found in albinos and the EP decline was far less.

In order to study the corrective effects of thyroxine (T4) on functional abnormalities induced by congenital hypothyroidism, small doses of T4 were injected to propylthiouracil-treated (PTU-treated) rat pups for 2 consecutive days on selected periods of development (days 3 and 4, 6 and 7, 9 and 10, 12 and 13, 18 and 19). The effect of hyperbaric oxygen on cochlear microphonics, action potential of the auditory nerve, and brain stem response damaged by short exposure to noise is varied. Of 26 guinea pigs 14 showed a positive influence as measured by amplitudes. In 12 animals oxygen had little or no effect. The reason for this could lie in the individual reaction to the anesthetic of the section of the auditory nerve tested. The reaction of postmortem cochlear microphonics after hyperbaric oxygen treatment indicates oxygen diffusion through the round window.

Spontaneous and evoked activity of neurons in the inferior colliculus of guinea pigs was recorded before and after exposure to noise (continuous or intermittent white noise, 115 dB SPL for 30 min). A single unit was investigated in each animal, and its activity was monitored for several hours. Exposure to noise elevated the threshold of the tip of the tuning curve, resulting in a broadening of the tuning curve. Threshold elevation at the characteristic frequency was greater after exposure to intermittent noise (200 ms noise and 200 ms pause), reaching values of 22.8 +/- 3.7 dB (means +/- S.E.)

The role of neural activity in the long-term regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase in peripheral adrenergic neurons had been studied by electrically stimulating the preganglionic nerves innervating the superior cervical ganglion. Tyrosin hydroxylase activity was elevated maximally 3 days after stimulation. The magnitude of the increase varied from 25 to 120% depending on the frequency and duration of the stimulation.
