[Evaluation of infant feeding practices after implementation of recommendations for coeliac disease prophylaxis - pilot study].

UNLABELLED: Recent research data concerning the risk of coeliac disease confirm that introduction of food containing gluten during breast-feeding not later than 6 months of life is justified. According to ESPGHAN and EFSA introduction of solid foods in the diet of infants between 4-6 months of age is safe. AIM OF STUDY: Evaluation of feeding practices in healthy full-term infants after implementation of the recommendations of coeliac disease prevention. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Conducted analysis concerned 54 healthy full-term infants, living in Warsaw, aged 6 to 12 months. Of these, 27 childre

Study of Women, Infant Feeding, and Type 2 diabetes mellitus after GDM pregnancy (SWIFT), a prospective cohort study: methodology and design.

BACKGROUND: Women with history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 5 years after delivery. Evidence that lactation duration influences incident type 2 diabetes after GDM pregnancy is based on one retrospective study reporting a null association. The Study of Women, Infant Feeding and Type 2 Diabetes after GDM pregnancy (SWIFT) is a prospective cohort study of postpartum women with recent GDM within the Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) integrated health care system. The primary goal of SWIFT is to assess whether prolonged, i

Porphyridium cruentum-enriched Artemia enhances survival, growth, and viral resilience of glass eels (Anguilla bicolor bicolor) under endemic Anguillid herpesvirus-1 conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The tropical eel Anguilla bicolor bicolor is a valuable aquaculture commodity; however, the survival of glass eels during the early nursery stage remains low due to nutritional limitations and vulnerability to viral infections, especially Anguillid herpesvirus-1 (AngHV-1). Using microalgae to enrich live feed has been suggested as a strategy to enhance larval nutrition and resilience in endemic disease conditions. This study examined the effects of Artemia enriched with the red microalgae Porphyridium cruentum on the nutritional quality of live feed, survival and growth of

Understanding mosquito host-choice behaviour: a new and low-cost method of identifying the sex of human hosts from mosquito blood meals.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases are a global health problem, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths per year. Pathogens are transmitted by mosquitoes feeding on the blood of an infected host and then feeding on a new host. Monitoring mosquito host-choice behaviour can help in many aspects of vector-borne disease control. Currently, it is possible to determine the host species and an individual human host from the blood meal of a mosquito by using genotyping to match the blood profile of local inhabitants. Epidemiological models generally assume that mosquito biting behaviour is random; ho

Preparation and Characterization of Monoclonal Antibodies with High Affinity and Broad Class Specificity against Zearalenone and Its Major Metabolites.

This study aimed to detect and monitor total Zearalenone (ZEN) and its five homologs (ZENs) in cereals and feed. The monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with a high affinity and broad class specificity against ZENs were prepared, and the conditions of a heterologous indirect competitive ELISA (icELISA) were preliminarily optimized based on the ZEN mAbs. The immunogen ZEN-BSA was synthesized using the oxime active ester method (OAE) and identified using infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV). The coating antigen ZEN-OVA was obtained via the 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether method (BDE). Balb/c mice were im

Predictors of positive blood culture and deaths among neonates with suspected neonatal sepsis in a tertiary hospital, Mwanza-Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates. Appropriate clinical diagnosis and empirical treatment in a given setting is crucial as pathogens of bacterial sepsis and antibiotic sensitivity pattern can considerably vary in different settings. This study was conducted at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), Tanzania to determine the prevalence of neonatal sepsis, predictors of positive blood culture, deaths and antimicrobial susceptibility, thus providing essential information to formulate a policy for management of neonatal sepsis. METHODS: This was a pr

Probiotics for the postoperative management of term neonates after gastrointestinal surgery.

BACKGROUND: The intestinal microflora has an essential role in providing a barrier against colonisation of pathogens, facilitating important metabolic functions, stimulating the development of the immune system, and maintaining intestinal motility. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can be administered to supplement the gut flora. Neonates who have undergone gastrointestinal surgery are particularly susceptible to infectious complications in the postoperative period. This may be partly due to a disruption of the integrity of the gut and its intestinal microflora. There may be a role for p

The amount of ghrelin-immunoreactive cells in the abomasum and intestines of 13-14-week-old calves supplemented with Jerusalem artichoke flour alone or in combination with Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The use of antibiotics in animals for disease prevention and productivity has been banned in the European Union since 2006. Possible alternatives can be used prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics. These compounds can improve feed digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract with identical nutrient uptake, while imparting the feeling of satiety, which reduces the activity of ghrelin-immunoreactive (IR) cells. The number of studies performed on the activity of ghrelin-IR cells in ruminants is insufficient. In particular, there are few such studies in calves during

Approach to management of walled-off necrosis secondary to trauma-induced pancreatitis in a limited-resource setting.

Walled-off necrosis (WON) is a well-defined collection of necrotic tissue that arises as a long-standing complication of acute pancreatitis, developing more than four weeks after the initial episode. It contains liquid and solid necrotic material within a mature fibrous wall lacking an epithelial lining. This encapsulation forms through an inflammatory response that walls off necrotic tissue, creating a discrete entity that is distinguishable on imaging. WON is more prone to infection and requires prompt intervention. In this case, a patient who had trauma-induced pancreatitis developed a necro

Method for Analyzing CAZyme Activity from Whole-Body and Saliva Proteome of Russian Wheat Aphid.

Advanced proteome extraction and characterization techniques for Diuraphis noxia (Russian Wheat Aphid: RWA) enable precise biochemical profiling, where high-quality proteome extraction is critical. This chapter introduces an optimized proteome extraction method for comprehensive profiling of D. noxia, enabling analysis of whole-body and saliva proteomes to advance biochemical and functional characterization. The efficacy of two optimized proteome extraction methods was compared: a nondestructive artificial saliva extraction and a destructive whole-body extraction. The proteome extract concentr

Life expectancy in open spina bifida.

AIM: To estimate life expectancies for individuals with open spina bifida, stratified by age, sex, functional ability, and specific impairments. METHOD: In the present study, extensive data from 1659 persons in California (1986-2019) were analysed using standard methods. Empirical mortality rates were calculated, and rates were also derived for various cohorts using logistic regression. Life tables were then constructed, from which life expectancies were obtained. RESULTS: Survival varied significantly by ambulatory and feeding ability, and by bowel/bladder continence. For example, at age 5

Synthetic Shewanella-Bacillus Microbial Consortia for Enhanced Metal Oxide Leaching From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Brewing Wastewater as Leaching Agent.

The rapid proliferation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) underscores the need for recycling, yet existing methods are costly, inefficient, and environmentally challenging. This work developed a spent LIBs recycling approach using brewing wastewater and designed a microbial consortium as a biocatalyst for facilitating metal oxide leaching. The Shewanella oneidensis reduces spent LIBs cathode LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) via extracellular electron transfer (EET) by feeding with brewing wastewater's organics, and the Bacillus subtilis removes residual ethanol to eliminate inhibition on EET. The catalyt

G Protein-Coupled Receptor 17 (Gpr17) Enhances Leptin and Insulin Sensitivity in Lean and Obese Mouse Models.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity, a major driver for diabetes development, is characterized by insulin and leptin resistance. We previously showed that loss of G protein-coupled receptor 17 (Gpr17) in specific hypothalamic neurons and the intestine led to better energy balance and glucose metabolism. Our goal is to test whether general loss of Gpr17 enhances insulin and leptin sensitivity. METHODS: We generated germline Gpr17 knockout mice on both lean (Gpr17 -/- ) and obese (Gpr17 -/- ; ob/ob) backgrounds and characterized their metabolic profile. RESULTS: Gpr17 -/- mice exhibited increased energy expend

Pediatric gastrointestinal transit scintigraphy: From esophageal transit to whole-gut transit.

Pediatric gastrointestinal scintigraphy provides physiologic, quantitative, and clinically useful information for children with suspected motility disorders, feeding intolerance, reflux or aspiration, refractory constipation, and complex postsurgical anatomy. This review summarizes the role of esophageal transit scintigraphy, gastric emptying and gastroesophageal reflux scintigraphy, and small-bowel and colonic transit scintigraphy in children. These studies complement anatomic imaging, endoscopy, pH-impedance testing, and manometry by directly evaluating the movement of radiolabeled meals or

How I do it: transpharyngeal resection of base of tongue cancer with hyoid suspension.

OBJECTIVE: Transoral robotic surgery is increasingly used for selected base-of-tongue tumours, but is often impractical in patients with severe trismus and remains cost prohibitive. Conventional transmandibular approaches are associated with significant morbidity. We describe a transpharyngeal technique incorporating hyoid suspension to address these limitations. METHODS: A retrospective series of patients undergoing transpharyngeal resection for base-of-tongue carcinoma is presented. The technique includes neck dissection with vascular control, lateral-inferior pharyngotomy, tumour excision

Brain Pathology in Terminal Deletion of Chromosome 4 (4q- Syndrome): A Case Report.

Background/objectives: To report the complete neuropathologic description of an infant with terminal deletion q31-q35 of chromosome 4 (4q- syndrome), because much published work has been devoted to the genetics of 4q- syndrome and almost nothing to its neuropathology. Most patients with 4q31-4q35 deletion have suggestive phenotypic features and moderate to severe developmental and language delay; rare patients with autistic behavior and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy have been associated with small deletions limited to 4q31 and 4q35, respectively. Resident-Driven Guideline to Reduce Iatrogenic Pneumothoraxes From Small-Bore Feeding Tubes: A Quality and Safety Improvement Project.

Small-bore feeding tubes (SBFT) in vulnerable patients carry a risk of iatrogenic pneumothorax by misplacement into the lung. This institution noted a series of iatrogenic pneumothoraxes caused by the placement of these devices. A resident-led, multidisciplinary team developed a hospital guideline through a consensus-driven process. The guideline mandated SBFT placement by approved "super-users" via the CORTRAK Enteral Access System or via non-CORTRAK Methods, including the 2-step X-ray Method, fluoroscopy, or direct visualization techniques. A "super-user" Program for the CORTRAK Enteral Acce
