Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is endemic to Israel. Since 2004, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has mandated the prophylaxis of tick-bitten subjects with a five-day doxycycline course. We examined the safety and effectiveness of this policy in preventing TBRF. We analyzed the records from January 2004 to January 2007, and identified all reported events of tick bites or TBRF cases. Acute Q fever and scrub typhus are zoonoses endemic to southern Taiwan. Among the 137 patients with acute Q fever (89, 65.0%) or scrub typhus (43, 31.4%), we identified 5 patients (3.6%) who were co-infected with Coxiella burnetii and Orientia tsutsugamushi.

A 15-year-old male developed transient monocular visual loss secondary to retinal artery flow disturbance, vasospasm, and possible microemboli associated with acute rheumatic heart disease. He had insufficiently treated streptococcal pharyngitis. Inadequately treated rheumatic carditis should be considered among the causes of transient monocular visual loss in children.

Yellow fever vaccine is a live, attenuated viral preparation from the 17D virus strain. Since 1996, 34 cases of yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD) have been described. We report a new case of YEL-AVD. Given the potential risks associated with the vaccine, physicians should consider vaccination only for patients truly at risk for exposure to yellow fever, especially for primovaccination.

BACKGROUND: Prior to initiation of a program of registration, training, standards, and audit for yellow fever vaccination centers (YFVCs) in England, the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) assessed the current practice and resource needs of these centers.

We evaluated biochemical alterations as predictors of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Patients with confirmed infection with dengue virus were prospectively evaluated for the first seven days of disease to determine their final clinical outcome. Serum samples taken 48-96 hours after onset of fever were used for biochemical tests. Of 199 patients, 30 developed DHF. We present three cases of typhoid fever imported to Poland from India in the beginning of the year 2006 treated in our Zoonosis and Tropical Medicine Department. Two of them, with mild course of the disease, were vaccinated with Typhim Vi vaccine, the third didn't obtain any, and had very heavy, almost classical course of the disease.
