Finite element analysis vs experimental study of head firearm wound in pig.

To establish a finite element (FE) model of the pig head for simulating firearm wounds. An experimental study was carried out by measuring i … ss zones were mainly located at the impact region of the cranium, mainly located in occipital lobe, frontal lobe and skull base of brain, with a lower speed of stress distribution. The FE model was appropriate and conformed to the basic principles of wound ballistics.

Pervasive olfactory impairment after bilateral limbic system destruction.

What pattern of brain damage could completely obliterate the sense of olfaction in humans? We had an opportunity to address this intriguing question in Patient B., who has extensive bilateral damage to most of the limbic system, including the medial and lateral temporal lobes, orbital frontal cortex, insular cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and basal forebrain, caused by herpes simplex encephalitis. The patient demonstrated profound impairments in odor identification and recognition. Moreover, he could not discriminate between olfactory stimuli, and he had severe impairments in odor detectio

Imaging idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

It has been traditionally held that there is no radiological abnormality in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). Sophisticated image processing and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that, in some cases, there may be a subtle structural abnormality. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicates neuronal dysfunction with differing patterns of abnormality in the IGE sub-syndromes, and high levels of glutamate and glutamine have been suggested in the frontal lobes, and low GABA levels in the occipital lobe. Studies reflecting cerebral blood flow at the time …

Decreased thalamic metabolism without thalamic magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities following shearing injury to the substantia nigra.

A 36-year-old man had fallen about 8 metres. Radiographs showed a mandibular fracture, indicating rotatory force applied to the head. Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging showed hyperintensity in both medial temporal lobes, left medial midbrain, right midbrain including cerebral peduncle, left pulvinar, left external capsule, fornix, splenium of corpus callosum, and deep white matter of both frontal lobes. Quantitative [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) indicated markedly suppressed glucose metabolism in the left thalamus but not markedly in the s…

Neuropeptide deficits in schizophrenia vs. Alzheimer's disease cerebral cortex.

Neuropeptide concentrations were determined in the postmortem cerebral cortex from 19 cognitive-impaired schizophrenics, 4 normal elderly su … de were unchanged. Neuropeptide deficits in schizophrenics were more pronounced in the temporal and frontal lobes than in the occipital lobe. The mechanisms underlying these deficits in schizophrenia and AD are likely distinct. In schizophrenia, a common neural element, perhaps the cerebral cortical gaba-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-containing neuron, may underlie …

Distribution of monoamine-containing neurons in the brain of a teleost, Carassius auratus (Cyprinidae).

The occurrence and distribution of monoamine-(MA) containing neurons and fibres in the brain of Carassius was investigated by formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF) histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp technique). Many brightly green-fluorescent nerve cell perikarya were found in the nucleus dorsolateralis and ventromedialis, in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis, in the nucleus recessus lateralis and posterioris. They also occurred in the mesencephalic nucleus lateralis valvulae, in the metencephalic nucleus gustatorius secundus and near the ventricular borders of the facial and vagal lobes

Investigating the impact of white matter hyperintensities on longitudinal progression in progressive supranuclear palsy.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities (WMH), traditionally linked to cerebral small vessel disease, are frequent in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). This study assessed their prognostic value in disease progression. METHODS: Sixty PSP patients underwent 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at baseline and then were followed for of 48.62 ± 25.11 (mean ± standard deviation) months with extensive neurological evaluations. WMH were rated with the age-related white matter changes (ARWMC) scale (total and lobar), classifying patients into two groups: ARWMC = 0 (without WMH) and ARWMC >

However, it is … ents had reduced rsFC between the BF subregions and the cerebellum, striatum, default mode network, frontal lobe, and occipital lobes. In the FBTCS group, the rsFC between the left Ch1-3 and striatum was positive correlated with the vigilance measures. In the non-FBTCS group, the rsFC between the left Ch4 and striatum was significantly negative correlated with …

Age-related estimates of aggregate g-ratio of white matter structures assessed using quantitative magnetic resonance neuroimaging.

The g-ratio, defined as the inner-to-outer diameter of a myelinated axon, is associated with the speed of nerve impulse conduction, and repr … ected, we observed that these age-related differences vary across different brain regions, with the frontal lobes and parietal lobes exhibiting slightly earlier ages of minimum aggregate g-ratio as compared to more posterior structures such as the occipital lobes and temporal lobes; this agrees with the retrogenesis paradigm. Our results provide evidence for a …

Meningeal Hemangiopericytoma Presenting as Pure Gerstmann Syndrome: A Double Rarity.

Gerstmann syndrome is a neurobehavioral syndrome characterized by four cardinal symptoms: acalculia, agraphia, finger-toe agnosia, and dysgraphia. The syndrome is caused primarily by lesions at the confluence of parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, but also can involve the middle frontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere. Documented inciting lesions include stroke, tumor, hemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, and seizures. A meningeal solitary fibrous tumor (SFT)/hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a diagnostic challenge due to its resemblance to more common brain tumors like meningioma, with his…

The history of the neurophysiology and neurology of the parietal lobe.

The development and change of knowledge on the function of the parietal lobe from the second half of the 19th century to the early 1970s are reviewed. Motor and somatosensory functions were initially localized in a broad frontoparietal region. At the beginning of the 20th century the motor cortex was restricted to the posterior frontal lobe. The separate attribution of somatosensory functions to the parietal lobe was initially based on anatomic considerations, but mostly on localized bodily sensations elicited by electric stimulation in awake patients. Patients and nonhuman primates with anter…

[Gas shadow on CT scan following treatment in metastatic brain tumor--an autopsy case].

This is an autopsy case report of a 52-year-old woman with a brain abscess presenting as an intracerebral gas shadow on CT scan. She was admitted to our facility in June 1977, with disorientation and motor weakness of the right upper extremities. CT scan revealed two separate mass lesions in the frontal and occipital lobes on the left side. She was diagnosed as having metastatic carcinoma, and was treated by tumor removal, radiation therapy, and intraneoplastic local chemotherapy. Seventeen months later, she was readmitted with decreased mental activity, hemiconvulsion of the right side and hi
