Invisible struggles: WASH insecurity and implications of extreme weather among urban homeless in high-income countries - A systematic scoping review.

This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of the water-, sanitation- and hygiene (WASH)-related insecurities that people experiencing homelessness in urban areas of high-income countries (HIC) are facing, and how these insecurities are further complicated during extreme weather events. While limited recent research has looked into WASH among people experiencing homelessness in HICs, and while some work has considering the implications of climate change on WASH and health, the nexus of WASH, extreme weather events and homelessness in HICs have not been studied thus far. We conducted the

A Protocol for a Feasibility and Acceptability Study of a Participatory, Multi-Level, Dynamic Intervention in Urban Outreach Centers to Improve the Oral Health of Low-Income Chinese Americans.

INTRODUCTION: While the US health care system has the capability to provide amazing treatment of a wide array of conditions, this care is not uniformly available to all population groups. Oral health care is one of the dimensions of the US health care delivery system in which striking disparities exist. More than half of the population does not visit a dentist each year. Improving access to oral health care is a critical and necessary first step to improving oral health outcomes and reducing disparities. Fluoride has contributed profoundly to the improved dental health of populations worldwide

A comprehensive methodology for determining the most informative mammographic features.

This study aims to determine the most informative mammographic features for breast cancer diagnosis using mutual information (MI) analysis. Our Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-approved database consists of 44,397 consecutive structured mammography reports for 20,375 patients collected from 2005 to 2008. The reports include demographic risk factors (age, family and personal history of breast cancer, and use of hormone therapy) and mammographic features from the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System lexicon. We calculated MI using Shannon's entropy measure for each feature

Epidemiological update of cystic echinococcosis in livestock and assessment of practices related to its control in the Mediterranean area.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic parasitic disease that still represents a serious threat to human and animal health worldwide. The Mediterranean basin is recognized as one of the major hotspots of CE due to several factors, including the presence of diverse intermediate host species as well as socio-economic and cultural conditions of local communities. This study aims to take a closer look at epidemiological data on CE in the Mediterranean area and assess the knowledge attitudes and practices of shepherds towards this disease in four c

Human Adenovirus Surveillance - United States, 2003-2016.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses in the family Adenoviridae; seven species (A-G) and >60 genotypes are known to cause human infection (1). Clinical manifestations associated with HAdV infection include fever, acute respiratory illness, gastroenteritis, and conjunctivitis. HAdV infection can be severe, particularly among immunocompromised patients, and can cause respiratory failure, disseminated infection, hemorrhagic cystitis, neurologic disease, and death (1,2). Illness tends to occur sporadically and without demonstrated seasonality. Outbreaks of HAdV

Food structure-mediated stomach-brain neural signaling controls gastric emptying.

Obesity and diabetes pose a major threat to public health and brings huge economic and social burdens. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays a crucial role in the occurrence of the metabolic disorder by sending key information to the brain through nervous system to control food intake. Understanding the underlying mechanisms on how the food structure mediates the brain-stomach neutrally regulating digestion process, especially gastric emptying, is thus paramount for precisely designing food structure and for effectively controlling appetite and reducing diet-related disease. This review discusses

[Coccidioidomycosis: current status of the endemic in Venezuela].

Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal infection endemic in the Americas, caused by a dimorphic fungus. Inhalation of arthroconidia transported by wind colonize lung tissue causing mycosis. Diagnosis is made through epidemiological and mycological study, complemented by histopathological, molecular and immune response. In Venezuela it has been reported since 1948 when Dr. Humberto Campins described the first case in Barquisimeto, Lara state. The fungal diseases in Venezuela are not mandatory notification,so that t6here is a serious underreporting in the annual statistics of the country; howev
