Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the NF1 gene, which encodes the protein neurofibromin. Patients exhibit characteristic hyperpigmented patches called café-au-lait patches. Melanocytes of NF1 patients differ from normal human melanocytes, but no differences account completely for lesional hyperpigmentation. An association between beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) and neurofibromin, and their localization to the melanosome, may help explain the development of café-au-lait patches.

The antiproliferative activity of two nitrogenous labdane cytotoxic substances from Lissoclinum voeltzkowi Michaelson (Urochordata), dichlorolissoclimide (P2) and chlorolissoclimide (P1), was studied in vitro on a continuous human non-small-cell bronchopulmonary carcinoma line (NSCLC-N6) at the cell cycle level. This antiproliferative effect resulted from a blockade of G1 phase cells. Mortality occurred, regardless of the degree of cell ploidy, with cell transition to an out-of-cycle situation characteristic of a G1D terminal maturation state.

After a review of the literature on epidemiological, serological and histopathological data concerning so-called "Amazon Black Fever" (Labrea disease), an experimental model of morphological reproduction of the disease is presented. The model is based on the probable causal synergism of Labrea hepatitis, i.e., viral injury plus protein-caloric malnutrition. Mice infected with the Oriboca arbovirus presented classic yellow-fever-like lesions of the liver, with a few malnourished animals showing the characteristic morular changes of the human disease.
