Psychopathological factors and personality dimensions on dysfunctional eating behaviors in a sample of individuals with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and eating disorders are considered to be part of a broad spectrum of disorders associated with weight issues and maladaptive eating styles. Several studies show that psychopathological and personality characteristics contribute to the development and maintenance of obesity and dysfunctional eating behaviors, showing a bidirectional relationship. The purpose of this study was to understand the role of psychopathological factors and personality dimensions on dysfunctional eating behaviors in a sample of individuals with obesity. METHODS: The study was conducted with 96 in

Restoring arm function with a soft robotic wearable for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Despite promising results in the rehabilitation field, it remains unclear whether upper limb robotic wearables, e.g., for people with physical impairments resulting from neurodegenerative disease, can be made portable and suitable for everyday use. We present a lightweight, fully portable, textile-based, soft inflatable wearable robot for shoulder elevation assistance that provides dynamic active support to the upper limbs. The technology is mechanically transparent when unpowered, can quantitatively assess free movement of the user, and adds only 150 grams of weight to each upper limb. In 10

Mechanisms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease development in normal-weight individuals.

While non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) without inflammation or fibrosis is considered a relatively 'benign' disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), by contrast, is characterized by marked inflammation in addition to lipid accumulation, and may include fibrosis, progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Obesity and type II diabetes are frequently associated with NAFLD/NASH; however, a significant number of lean individuals may develop these diseases. Little attention has been paid to the causes and mechanisms contributing to NAFLD development in normal-weight indivi

Nasal Patency in Sitting, Supine, and Prone Positions in Individuals with and without Allergic Rhinitis.

(1) Background: Physiological changes in nasal patency in response to posture contribute to sleep-related problems. Previously, we reported that the supine and prone positions cause a significant decrease in nasal patency in subjective and objective assessments of healthy individuals. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate the effect of posture on nasal patency in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR); (2) Methods: The present study comprised 30 patients diagnosed with AR and 30 healthy subjects without nasal disease (non-AR). Changes in nasal patency were evaluated in the sitting, supine,

Contribution of the APOE Genotype to Cognitive Impairment in Individuals With NOTCH3 Cysteine-Altering Variants.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is the most prevalent monogenic cerebral small-vessel disease. Phenotype variability in CADASIL suggests the possible role of genetic modifiers. We aimed to investigate the contributions of the APOE genotype and Neurogenic locus notch homolog protein 3 (NOTCH3) variant position to cognitive impairment associated with CADASIL. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with the cysteine-altering NOTCH3 variant were enrolled in a cross-sectional study, including the Mini-Mental State Examination

Benefits of a mosaic approach for assessing cortical atrophy in individual multiple sclerosis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Cortical gray matter (GM) atrophy plays a central role in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathology. However, it is not commonly assessed in clinical routine partly because a number of methodological problems hamper the development of a robust biomarker to quantify GM atrophy. In previous work, we have demonstrated the clinical utility of the "mosaic approach" (MAP) to assess individual GM atrophy in the motor neuron disease spectrum and frontotemporal dementia. In this study, we investigated the clinical utility of MAP in MS, comparing this novel biomarker to existing methods for computing

Individual and population screening of varices needing treatment by a simple, safe and accurate test.

BACKGROUND: Several tests have been developed to screen varices needing treatment (VNT) in different screening settings. We aimed to develop simple estimators to quantify VNT risk and spare endoscopy while missing <5% of VNT, adapted to different screenings in the main etiologies. METHODS: 2,368 patients with chronic liver disease were included. The main VNT predictors were platelets, prothrombin index (PI) and LSM. Their interactions led to score construction, LIP: (LSM*45)/(PI*platelets), and BLIP: BMI-adjusted LIP in NAFLD. Scores were categorized either for population (VNT sensitivity ≥95

Risky driving behavior among individuals with Autism, ADHD, and typically developing persons.

INTRODUCTION: Many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience difficulty with driving, including difficulty with obtaining a driver's license as well as driving safely and efficiently. Such difficulties negatively impact their ability to function independently and participate in daily activities that require driving. ASD and ADHD commonly occur co-morbidly and share many overlapping clinical features. Few studies have directly compared the nature of difficulties in driving safety outcomes between ASD and ADHD. The overar

Cardiovascular Risk Related to Glomerular Hyperfiltration in Nondiabetic Individuals: Increasing Visibility is Crucial.

Glomerular hyperfiltration (GHF), defined by different estimation formulas, has been widely studied as a predictor of proteinuria and progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in diabetic patients. GHF is also an important cardiovascular (CV) risk factor and is related to allcause mortality in non-diabetic populations; however, the upper limit of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) above which it indicates the presence of GHF is weakly defined. This higher risk is as high as in the intermediate stages of CKD and is greater than the presence of diabetes or smoking and is still present in non-alb

Exploring spirituality and quality of life in individuals who are deaf and have intellectual disabilities.

PURPOSE: While positive contributions of religion and spirituality (R/S) to quality of life (QOL) are confirmed by a growing body of evidence, only limited research has involved people with intellectual disabilities and so far, no studies included prelingually deaf individuals with intellectual disabilities. This study explores the role of R/S in people with intellectual disabilities and deafness living in three therapeutic living communities specifically adapted to their needs. METHODS: Forty-one individuals (mean age: 46.93 years, 43.9% female) with prelingual deafness and mild to moderate

Phenotypic effect of GBA1 variants in individuals with and without Parkinson's disease: The RAPSODI study.

BACKGROUND: Variants in the GBA1 gene cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher disease (GD). They are also risk factors for Parkinson's disease (PD), and modify the expression of the PD phenotype. The penetrance of GBA1 variants in PD is incomplete, and the ability to determine who among GBA1 variant carriers are at higher risk of developing PD, would represent an advantage for prognostic and trial design purposes. OBJECTIVES: To compare the motor and non-motor phenotype of GBA1 carriers and non-carriers. METHODS: We present the cross-sectional results of the baseline assessment from the

Hierarchical contribution of individual lifestyle factors and their interactions on adenomatous and serrated polyp risk.

BACKGROUND: Individual colorectal polyp risk factors are well characterized; however, insights into their pathway-specific interactions are scarce. We aimed to identify the impact of individual risk factors and their joint effects on adenomatous (AP) and serrated polyp (SP) risk. METHODS: We collected information on 363 lifestyle and metabolic parameters from 1597 colonoscopy participants, resulting in over 521,000 data points. We used multivariate statistics and machine-learning approaches to assess associations of single variables and their interactions with AP and SP risk. RESULTS: Indivi

Polygenic risk score prediction of multiple sclerosis in individuals of South Asian ancestry.

Polygenic risk scores aggregate an individual's burden of risk alleles to estimate the overall genetic risk for a specific trait or disease. Polygenic risk scores derived from genome-wide association studies of European populations perform poorly for other ancestral groups. Given the potential for future clinical utility, underperformance of polygenic risk scores in South Asian populations has the potential to reinforce health inequalities. To determine whether European-derived polygenic risk scores underperform at multiple sclerosis prediction in a South Asian-ancestry population compared wit

Measuring Nuance in Individual Contraceptive Need: A Case Study from a Cohort in Malawi.

Contraceptive counseling protocols tend to focus narrowly on pregnancy intentions, which may overlook other factors that contribute to whether an individual wants or needs contraception. In this report, we demonstrate the potential of two measures of individual contraceptive need that could be assessed as part of contraceptive counseling: (1) a composite score constructed from pregnancy intentions, sexual frequency, and perceived fecundity and (2) a direct measure of contraceptive need ("do you feel it is necessary for you to be using contraception right now?") We compare the two measures usin
