Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing in incidence in many parts of the world and is becoming an important global health threat. T2DM results from a disturbance in glucose metabolism and is triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In regions where diabetes is prevalent, viral infections are also common; both conditions can contribute to increased blood sugar levels. We hypothesize that under these conditions, viral infections could accelerate many of the complications of T2DM in predisposed individuals. The high glucose levels may negatively impact blood vessel …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global issue; however, in lower resource settings, uncontrolled measures and uncontrolled use of antibiotics in human, animal, and agricultural practices have increased their prevalence in developing countries. Various mechanisms have been implicated to explain the AMR, like the circulation of the plasmid carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARG), mutation in target genes (intrinsic and plasmid), overexpression of efflux pumps, underexpression of porins, etc. Various therapeutic strategies used to combat AMR exist, such as nonantibiotic approaches (vaccinat

BACKGROUND: Bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs), originally identified for their role in gustation, are now recognized for their functions in extraoral tissues, particularly in innate immune responses. TAS2Rs detect bacterial quorum sensing molecules (QSMs) and other metabolites, enabling the host to sense and respond to pathogenic threats across mucosal surfaces.
OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes current knowledge of TAS2Rs in the context of bacterial infection, emphasizing their mechanisms of immune modulation, genetic polymorphisms, tissue-specific expression, and therapeutic potential.

Biomaterials including catheters, artificial joints, dental implants, and contact lenses are highly susceptible to bacterial adhesion, colonization, and biofilm formation, leading to biomaterials-associated infections (BAIs). BAIs pose a significant challenge to the healthcare sector, contributing to increased morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Preventing bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation is crucial to eliminate BAIs. This special issue, dedicated to Prof. Henk J. Busscher (The University of Groningen, The Netherlands) on the occasion of his retirement, presents original researc…

Urinary tract infection (UTI), a common clinical infectious disease, is marked by high incidence and frequent recurrence. Recurrent UTIs can cause severe complications, negatively affecting health. The emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacteria present significant challenges to UTI treatment. This article systematically reviews the key immune mechanisms in the body's defense against UTI pathogens. It discusses various immune response components, such as the urinary tract mucosal epithelium, neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, mast cells, innate lymphocytes, T cells, and B cells, wi

BACKGROUND: Procalcitonin (PCT) is an effective inflammatory marker for diagnosing infection. We assessed the clinical utility of procalcitonin in diagnosing diabetic foot infections.
METHOD: This meta-analysis adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and the Cochrane Library for studies on PCT for the diagnosis of diabetic foot published before 1 July 2024. The primary outcome was the standardised mean difference (SMD) in PCT levels between IDFU and non-IDFU groups, with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). The included studies were cross-sectional…

The culture-positive rate, distribution of gram-positive pathogens, methicillin resistance, mixed infections, and multidrug resistance were analyzed. The effective coverage rates of antibiotics were determined, and appropriate empirical antibiotic regimens were proposed.

OBJECTIVE: Submicroscopic Plasmodium infections, mostly undetected by routine diagnostic techniques, represent a potential reservoir that contributes to the continued transmission of malaria in the community. To achieve the World Health Organization's goal of malaria elimination, it is therefore essential to identify all parasite carriers and treat them effectively with recommended antimalarial drugs. The aim of this study was to estimate the proportion of submicroscopic Plasmodium spp. infections not detected by microscopy in symptomatic patients with suspected malaria attending health center…

Cystic fibrosis produces viscous mucus in the lung that increases bacterial invasion, causing persistent infections and subsequent inflammation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two of the most common infections in cystic fibrosis patients that are resistant to antibiotics. One antibiotic approved to treat these infections is levofloxacin (LVX), which functions to inhibit bacterial replication but can be further developed into tailorable particles. Nanoparticles are an emerging inhaled therapy due to enhanced targeting and delivery. The extracellular matrix (ECM) has been s…

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) infect a wide range of mammalian and bird species and are responsible for seasonal outbreaks and occasional pandemics of great consequences in humans. Studying IAVs requires methods to detect the presence of the virus in infected cells or animal models. Recombinant IAV-expressing fluorescent proteins has allowed monitoring of viral infection in cultured cells and ex vivo in the organs of infected animals. However, fluorescent-expressing IAVs are often attenuated and are not suited for the imaging of infected animals using in vivo imaging systems (IVISs). To overcome

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid-bound nanocarriers released by various eukaryotic cells and found in diverse bodily fluids. EVs have transitioned from being considered cellular waste disposers to significant players in intercellular communication and signaling. These EVs carry signature cargos of infected cells and thus can be helpful as biomarkers or prognostic markers for infectious diseases. Viruses can manipulate the EV biogenesis machinery in their own dissemination. EVs released from virus-infected cells can carry immune modulatory molecules, thus contributing to disease progressi

Sheeppox virus (SPPV), goatpox virus (GTPV) and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) belong to the genus Capripoxvirus (CaPV) within the family Poxviridae. These transboundary and highly infectious viruses cause substantial economic losses by affecting the productivity of both small and large ruminants. Clinical manifestations include cutaneous lesions (skin nodules and pustular lesions), lymphadenopathy, pneumonia, reduced milk yield, mastitis, infertility and abortion. The diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical signs, virus isolation, serology and PCR/real-time PCR. Recent advancements h

SUMMARYPersons who inject drugs are at increased risk of bacterial and fungal injecting-related infections due to many physiological, societal, and structural factors. An estimated 15 million persons inject drugs worldwide, with recent increases in the burden of injecting-related infections. Acquisition of these infections has distinct pathophysiology and microbiology related to drug supply, drug composition, and the process of injecting. Clinical management of these infections is complicated by usual factors such as the need for source control and effective antibiotics, as well as the complex…

The prevalence of immunosuppression in the general population has been increasing over time due to a combination of factors, including advances in health care and the emergence of new therapies. Population-based studies show that approximately 3% of the population are prescribed systemic corticosteroid therapy at least once a year. Additionally, the number of immunomodulatory agents, such as biologics and small molecules, continues to grow. The chronic use of systemic corticosteroid and immunomodulating agents has an impact not only on the incidence of patients with pneumonia, but also on thei

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat. In patients undergoing cataract surgery, AMR complicates infection control, particularly efforts to reduce the risk of endophthalmitis-a rare but severe postoperative complication. This article reviews country-specific strategies for endophthalmitis prevention, focusing on antimicrobial use.
METHODS: Ophthalmology experts from 10 countries contributed national perspectives on infection prevention. Official guidelines served as the primary basis for analysis; when unavailable, expert opinion and routine clin
