BACKGROUND: The sacroiliac joint is a common but under-recognized source of low back and gluteal pain. Patients with degenerative sacroiliitis or sacroiliac joint disruption resistant to nonsurgical treatments may undergo open surgery with sacroiliac joint arthrodesis, although outcomes are mixed and risks are significant. Minimally invasive sacroiliac joint arthrodesis was developed to minimize the risk of iatrogenic injury and to improve patient outcomes compared with open surgery.
METHODS: Between April 2009 and January 2013, 5319 patients were treated with the iFuse SI Joint Fusion System

Open reduction and stabilisation of coxofemoral joint luxation was made via a ventral approach to the hip joint in dogs and cats, using a transarticular stainless steel rope. A feature of the procedure is transarticular penetration of the rope from the pelvic cavity to the femoral neck by guidance with a guide wire which was previously inserted from the femoral neck into the pelvic cavity and by detection of the guide wire in the pelvic cavity by use of forceps connected to an alarm-ohmmeter. Forty-seven animals (37 dogs and 10 cats) with acute and simple coxofemoral luxation were treated and

A group of patients were matched for clinical diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and duration and type of preoperative management. The patients all had intractible sciatica. They were submitted to this study by nine participating authors working independently in various centers in North America. Of these patients, those with spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis or those who had had previous surgery were excluded. The patients were treated by chemonucleolysis or by surgery. The information in the various parts of the protocol allowed: (1) identification of the joint at risk, (2) the generic type of

BACKGROUND: Although preoperative screening and decolonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) reduce the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and surgical site infections (SSI) after total joint arthroplasty (TJA), the residual infection risk in MRSA-colonized patients who undergo decolonization remains debated. This systematic review investigated the association between preoperative MRSA colonization and the risk of PJI and SSI after TJA.
METHODS: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, PubMed/M

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication requiring rapid diagnosis for effective treatment. The BIOFIRE® Joint Infection (JI) Panel, a fully automated multiplex PCR system, enables the identification of 31 organisms and 8 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes within 1 h, offering a promising diagnostic method. However, its diagnostic performance, particularly in Asian populations, remains underexplored.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 60 cases of suspected PJI between 2022 and 2023. Synovial fluid samples were evaluated using the JI Panel and micr

Background: Patients with a triad of severe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pathologies, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and dentofacial deformities often experience significant functional and aesthetic impairments. A combination of total TMJ reconstruction and maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) has emerged as a promising treatment option, which can address the complexity of these conditions simultaneously. Methods: This paper presents a practical protocol for TMJ reconstruction using patient-specific alloplastic total joint prosthesis in conjunction with additional splintless osteotomies. This

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the fingers are commonly treated in hand therapy departments. Conservative management for PIPJ volar plate injuries typically involves a dorsal blocking orthosis and flexion exercises. Historically hand therapists have placed the PIPJ in varying degrees of flexion but the optimal angle is unknown.
PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of two treatment groups who received dorsal blocking orthoses: Those who the orthosis was positioned in neutral compared to those in 25-30° of flexion.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.

Objective This study aimed to use the optical motion-capture method to verify the accuracy of four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) analysis of knee joint movement. Methods One static CT and three 4D-CT examinations of the knee joint model were obtained. The knee joint model was passively moved in the CT gantry during 4D-CT acquisitions. 4D-CT and static CT examinations were matched to perform 3D-3D registration. An optical-motion capture system recorded the position-posture of the knee joint model simultaneously with the 4D-CT acquisitions. Reference axes (X, Y, and Z directions) were

PURPOSE: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication with total joint arthroplasty (TJA), that necessitates reoperation. Pre-closure irrigation with dilute povidone-iodine (PI) is among the preventive measures, but its efficiency is still controversial. As a result, the focus of this systematic review and meta-analysis is on the effect of dilute PI wound irrigation in the prevention of PJI following TJA.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed and analyzed articles that compared PI with other agents in terms of PJI rate after TJA, searching Medline, Scopus, Web of science, and

A 28-year-old female recreational athlete presented with middle finger proximal interphalangeal joint pain, stiffness, and ulnar deviation deformity 2 years after internal fixation of a middle phalanx base fracture-dislocation. Radiographs revealed posttraumatic changes on both sides of the proximal interphalangeal joint. Having failed nonsurgical measures, she elected to proceed with surgical reconstruction. Intraoperatively, we confirmed substantial articular damage on both sides of the joint. We proceeded with hemi-hamate autograft for 80% of the middle phalanx base. We used a cobalt chrome

BACKGROUND: Patients with a patient-reported penicillin allergy may be at greater risk for postoperative prosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total joint arthroplasty of the hip, knee, or shoulder. The increased risk of PJI in these patients has been attributed to these patients receiving a less-effective perioperative antibiotic. However, prior reports did not fully address the clinical characteristics of these unique patients, who may inherently be at greater risk of having a PJI, which may confound prior findings.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: After controlling for risk factors for PJI such as BMI

BACKGROUND: Resistance is a key mechanical property of an ankle-foot orthosis that affects gait in individuals post-stroke. Triple Action® joints allow independent adjustment of plantarflexion resistance and dorsiflexion resistance of an ankle-foot orthosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of incremental changes in dorsiflexion and plantarflexion resistance of an articulated ankle-foot orthosis with the Triple Action joints on lower limb joint kinematics and kinetics in individuals post-stroke during gait.
METHODS: Gait analysis was performed on 10 individuals …

Collagen is the major structural component of cartilage, and mutations in the genes encoding type XI collagen are associated with severe skeletal dysplasias (fibrochondrogenesis and Stickler syndrome) and early-onset osteoarthritis (OA). The impact of the lack of type XI collagen on cell behaviour and mechanical performance during skeleton development is unknown. We studied a zebrafish mutant for col11a2 and evaluated cartilage, bone development and mechanical properties to address this. We show that in col11a2 mutants, type II collagen is made but is prematurely degraded in maturing cartilage
