Pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) and delivery outcomes in a Canadian population.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in women of childbearing age. Growing evidence suggests that maternal overweight and obesity is associated with poor maternal and perinatal outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of maternal pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity on pregnancy, labour and delivery outcomes in a cohort of women with term, singleton pregnancies cared for by family physicians in community based practices. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of the All Our Babies Cohort, a prospective, community-based preg

Maternal Influenza Vaccine Reduces the Risk of Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Related Respiratory Hospitalizations in Early Infancy: An Epidemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: We examined the impact of maternal inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations in Western Australian infants aged ≤6 months. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of births from April 2012 to December 2020 using linked, longitudinal data on births, deaths, perinatal data, hospitalizations, antenatal immunization records, and respiratory pathogen laboratory testing, with follow-up to 31 December 2021. We performed Cox proportional hazards models with inverse probability treatment weighting. Mother's receipt of IIV was th

Matrix metalloproteinases and their association with preeclampsia/eclampsia with maternal age: A potential link to cardiovascular disease in later life.

Maternal age is a well established risk factor for preeclampsia and eclampsia, with advanced maternal age (>35 years) associated with a significantly increased risk of developing these disorders. Preeclampsia and eclampsia are 2 of the most severe and life-threatening complications of pregnancy, affecting approximately 2%-8% of pregnancies worldwide. These disorders are characterized by high blood pressure, proteinuria, and multiorgan dysfunction, which can lead to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Despite advances in medical technology and prenatal care, the etiolo

Maternal mortality and its determining factors among hospitalised mothers in Tehran, Iran, 2013-2020.

The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is a significant indicator of the quality of a health care system. Despite considerable progress in reducing MMR in Iran in the past few years, we still face a long road ahead in eliminating preventable maternal deaths. In the present study, we evaluated all 80 cases of maternal deaths in 20 hospitals under the supervision of Tehran University of Medical Sciences between March 20 2013 and March 19 2020. During this time, these hospitals recorded 335,216 live births, with an MMR of 24 per 100,000 live births. The average age of deceased mothers was 31.9 ± 6.9

Prevalence of anaemia and associated factors among pregnant women living in Koloji camps of Fafan Zone of Somali Region, Ethiopia, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a major global public health problem affecting pregnant women, with a prevalence of about 40-50% in Sub-Saharan Africa and significant maternal and fetal consequences. Despite interventions, it remains highly prevalent in Ethiopia with regional variation. Internally displaced pregnant women are at higher risk due to food insecurity, poor diets, and limited health services. However, evidence on anaemia in Ethiopian IDP settings is limited. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia among pregnant women in Koloji IDP camp, Somali Region

Continuous maternal care of oral diseases from preconception to lactation.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Preconception-to-lactation oral care lacks universal standardized protocols, and the rising prevalence of pregnancy-related oral diseases demands safe, effective clinical guidelines. This study analyzed relevant literature to explore oral care strategies for women in this period. DATA/SOURCES: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science up to December 2025 using keywords including "perinatal", "pregnancy" and terms related to oral/dental diseases. The findings indicate that periodontal infections, pulp-involved caries and third molar pericoronitis ar

Maternal and early-life longitudinal cytokine profiles in a South African birth cohort: the impact of HIV.

INTRODUCTION: During pregnancy, exposure to maternal HIV and a disrupted cytokine environment may impact foetal immune development and health outcomes through cytokine-mediated mechanisms. We evaluated (i) peripheral blood cytokine differences in pregnant women with and without HIV, (ii) longitudinal trajectories in HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) and HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU) children, and (iii) cytokine groupings. Additionally, we explored the impact of the timing of maternal antiretroviral treatment (ART) initiation on cytokine levels and if cytokines predicted repeated hospitalisations d

Assessing Postnatal Immunisation Services in a Low-Resource Setting: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Background/Objectives: Postnatal immunisation is critical for maternal and child health, particularly in low-income countries. Despite international efforts, maternal awareness and access to care remain limited. Understanding the drivers behind postnatal immunisation services is critical for improving neonatal and maternal healthcare interventions. Methods: A tertiary healthcare facility's postpartum mothers who were seeking immunisation services participated in a prospective cross-sectional electronic survey. Convenience sampling was used to select respondents, who then answered a structured …

Maternal and neonatal outcomes of second-generation mothers in Europe: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Second-generation mothers (SGMs), born in European countries to foreign-born parents, represent a growing population. While disparities in maternal and neonatal health outcomes among first-generation migrants and natives are well documented, less is known about these outcomes among SGMs. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize evidence on maternal and neonatal health outcomes among SGMs, comparing them to both native-born women and first-generation migrants. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases up to December 2024, for studies reporting o

Neuroembryonic and fetal brain development: Relevance to fetal/neonatal neurological training.

Insight into neuroembryology, developmental neuroanatomy and neurophysiology distinguish the diagnostic approaches of paediatric from adult neurologists and general paediatricians. These fundamental disciplines of basic neuroscience could be more effectively taught during paediatric neurology and most residency programmes, that will strengthen career-long learning. Interdisciplinary training of fetal-neonatal neurology within these programs requires working knowledge of neuroembryology applied to maternal reproductive health influencing the maternal-placental-fetal triad, neonate, and young ch

Sexually Transmitted Infections in Pregnancy: A Narrative Review of the Global Research Gaps, Challenges, and Opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STI), such as chlamydial, gonorrheal, and trichomonal infections, are prevalent in pregnant women in many countries and are widely reported to be associated with increased risk of poor maternal and neonatal outcomes. Syndromic STI management is frequently used in pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries, yet its low specificity and sensitivity lead to both overtreatment and undertreatment. Etiologic screening for chlamydial, gonorrheal, and/or trichomonal infection in all pregnant women combined with targeted treatment might be an effectiv

The effect of tranexamic acid on the risk of death and hysterectomy in women with post-partum haemorrhage: statistical analysis plan for the WOMAN trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe haemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal death worldwide. Most haemorrhage deaths occur soon after childbirth. Severe post-partum bleeding is sometimes managed by the surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy). Death and hysterectomy are important health consequences of post-partum haemorrhage, and clinical trials of interventions aimed at preventing these outcomes are needed. METHODS: The World Maternal Antifibrinolytic trial aims to determine the effect of tranexamic acid on death, hysterectomy and other health outcomes in women with post-partum haemorrhage. It is an

Community health workers can improve child growth of antenatally-depressed, South African mothers: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal antenatal depression has long-term consequences for children's health. We examined if home visits by community health workers (CHW) can improve growth outcomes for children of mothers who are antenatally depressed. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial of all pregnant, neighbourhood women in Cape Town, South Africa. Almost all pregnant women (98 %, N = 1238) were recruited and assessed during pregnancy, two weeks post-birth (92 %) and 6 months post-birth (88 %). Pregnant women were randomized to either: 1) Standard Care (SC), which provided routine antenatal care

Maternal plasma concentrations of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances during pregnancy and anogenital distance in male infants.

STUDY QUESTION: Are maternal plasma concentrations of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) during pregnancy associated with anogenital distance (AGD) in male infants at birth, 6, and 12 months of age? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher maternal plasma concentrations of some PFASs were associated with shorter AGD in male infants at birth and 6 months of age. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Two animal studies have found that exposure to PFASs was associated with shorter AGD in male rat fetuses and wild male minks. There is only one human study on the topic that did not identify consistent patterns

Health literacy interventions for pregnant women with limited language proficiency in the country they live in: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Low health literacy can present significant risks throughout pregnancy, impacting both maternal and fetal health outcomes. Those who do not speak the main language of their country of residence are more likely to have lower health literacy. Considering the heightened challenges faced by this demographic in accessing, understanding, and engaging with health information and services, designing and implementing tailored interventions is crucial to mitigate health disparities. This review aims to identify and examine health literacy interventions developed for pregnant women whose firs
