Im Osten etwas Neues: Anthropological analysis of remains of German soldiers from 1915-1918.

In the summer of 2005, exhumation and identification of the remains of German soldiers was performed in Panevezys (Northern Lithuania). Historical data indicate that in autumn of 1915 the building of a local gymnasium was transformed into a military hospital, and casualties were buried in its garden. The hospital functioned until the German withdrawal in the winter 1918. Archaeological finds include ID tags, personal items, residues of uniforms and medical devices. Routine anthropological analysis was performed on the site, as the remains had to be ready for scheduled reburial the same summer.

Appropriateness and diagnostic yield of EGD: a prospective study in a large Asian hospital.

BACKGROUND: The appropriateness has become an important issue as the use of EGD becomes more widespread. No study of the appropriateness of EGD has been performed in the Asia-Pacific region. This study examined the appropriateness of EGD in a large Asian hospital by using the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2000 guidelines. A secondary aim was to correlate appropriateness with the presence of positive findings at EGD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of consecutive diagnostic EGDs performed at a university-affiliated, teaching hospital, which has an open-access e

Publicly available machine learning models for identifying opioid misuse from the clinical notes of hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Automated de-identification methods for removing protected health information (PHI) from the source notes of the electronic health record (EHR) rely on building systems to recognize mentions of PHI in text, but they remain inadequate at ensuring perfect PHI removal. As an alternative to relying on de-identification systems, we propose the following solutions: (1) Mapping the corpus of documents to standardized medical vocabulary (concept unique identifier [CUI] codes mapped from the Unified Medical Language System) thus eliminating PHI as inputs to a machine learning model; and (2)

Setup and initial testing of an endoscope manipulator system for assistance in transoral endoscopic surgery.

Purpose For the treatment of malignant diseases of the oral cavity and the larynx, a total or partial resection is the standard therapy, while in special cases chemo- and/or external radiation therapy is considered. Transoral access reduces trauma and hospitalization time. Transoral surgery is usually executed using external microscopic imaging. Therefore, the microscope is placed in the visual line of the opening of the mouth and throat. However, specific anatomical structures like the posterior commissure (dorsal end of the vocal cords) are not visible in these procedures. An endoscopic appr

Morbidity patterns among hospitalised Palestine refugees from Syria in Jordan: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Palestine refugees from Syria (PRS) are among the most vulnerable refugee groups for adverse health outcomes and require assistance from humanitarian agencies. As the armed conflict in Syria has continued, most Palestinians have been displaced from that country to neighbouring countries, where they have experienced difficulties in accessing essential services. More than 17 000 PRS are in Jordan as of 2018 and have received assistance from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), including free primary care and subsidised secondary

Factors Associated with Emergency Department Survival of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (TOHCA) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with exceptionally poor survival. However, prehospital prognostic factors influencing early survival in this high-risk population remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify prehospital factors associated with survival to hospital admission among TOHCA patients with TBI in Thailand. METHODS: We conducted an 11-year nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Information Technology of Emergency Medicine System (ITEMS), Thailand's national EMS registry (2012-202

Integrating Interpretability in Machine Learning and Deep Neural Networks: A Novel Approach to Feature Importance and Outlier Detection in COVID-19 Symptomatology and Vaccine Efficacy.

In this study, we introduce a novel approach that integrates interpretability techniques from both traditional machine learning (ML) and deep neural networks (DNN) to quantify feature importance using global and local interpretation methods. Our method bridges the gap between interpretable ML models and powerful deep learning (DL) architectures, providing comprehensive insights into the key drivers behind model predictions, especially in detecting outliers within medical data. We applied this method to analyze COVID-19 pandemic data from 2020, yielding intriguing insights. We used a dataset co

Transformer- and Generative Adversarial Network-Based Inpatient Traditional Chinese Medicine Prescription Recommendation: Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners usually follow a 4-step evaluation process during patient diagnosis: observation, auscultation, olfaction, inquiry, pulse feeling, and palpation. The information gathered in this process, along with laboratory test results and other measurements such as vital signs, is recorded in the patient's electronic health record (EHR). In fact, all the information needed to make a treatment plan is contained in the EHR; however, only a seasoned TCM physician could use this information well to make a good treatment plan as the reasoning process

Effect of concomitant use of benzodiazepines and other drugs on the risk of injury in a veterans population.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines comprise a class of drugs that when used as monotherapy are generally acknowledged to pose a risk for injury by increasing the likelihood of falls, fall-related injuries, adverse drug events and car accidents. Benzodiazepines may also be used concomitantly with other high risk medications that may further exacerbate the risk of injury. The aim of this study is to examine the occurrence of the concomitant use of benzodiazepines and other drugs and then quantify the indirect effect of these drug combinations on the likelihood of an injury-related health care episode.
