Seclusion and restraint represent adverse experiences that cause negative attitudes against psychiatric treatment and psychopathologic sequels such as posttraumatic stress disorder. We examined 117 consecutive admissions with schizophrenia, with an average of 8.7 previous admissions. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and Global Assessment of Functioning were obtained at admission and discharge, and traumatic events in the biography were recorded using the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale. Twenty-four men (42.9%) and 18 women (29.0%) had experienced seclusion or restraint in their psychiatric

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive motor neuron disease caused by the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. The disorder causes weakness and wasting of voluntary muscles. The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of living with SMA. Strategies used to manage symptoms and progression were also identified. Through e-mail communication, 11 participants were asked to respond to 5 questions about experiences with parents, family, friends, school, and healthcare providers, as well as provide demographic information. Participants were asked

The present study aims to test a new theoretical model for grouping Anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and muscle dysmorphia (MD) as Body Image Disorders. In a sample composed of 579 individuals from the community, we used exploratory bifactor modeling to investigate the presence of a higher-order general component in these disorders and identify shared and unique components within each condition. Additionally, we explored the relationships between the assessment instruments' total scores and external variables to assess the distinctiveness of the fact

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors leading to smoking cessation is of primary importance in reducing the death burden. Recently introduced in the DSM-5, craving is a potentially promising mechanism involved in relapse, but its articulation with quality of life and deprivation on tobacco student's consumers has never been investigated.
OBJECTIVES: Our study explores the relationship between tobacco craving and sub-dimensions of quality of life when controlling effect of deprivation on a youth population with tobacco consumption.
METHOD: Comparison between deprived and non-deprived students

Depression presents in roughly 20% of people with diabetes worldwide, and adversely affects quality of life and treatment outcomes. The causes of depression in diabetes are poorly understood, but research suggests a bi-directional association, at least for type 2 diabetes. Inconsistent findings regarding prevalence and depression treatment outcomes in patients with diabetes seem partly attributable to inconsistencies in the definition and measurement of depression and in distinguishing it from diabetes-distress, a psychological concept related to depression. We review evidence suggesting that

BACKGROUND: Decision making in complex and conflicting situations, as measured in the widely used Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), can be profoundly impaired in psychiatric disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, drug addiction, and also in healthy individuals for whom immediate gratification prevails over long-term gain. The cognitive processes underlying these deficits are poorly understood, in part due to a lack of suitable animal models assessing complex decision making with good construct validity.
METHODS: We developed a rat gambling task analogous to the IGT that tracks,

PURPOSE: Several characteristic personality types have been reported for glaucoma patients in previous studies. However, none of the previous studies used a common structural theory of personality. In this study, we conducted a multicenter cross-sectional case-control study using the recently established five-factor model of personality structure.
METHODS: Personality was evaluated using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), which is a questionnaire specifically designed to test the five-factor model of personality: neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness

In this review, findings of biobehavioral research into pathological gambling (PG) are discussed, focusing on neuropsychological, psychophysiological, neuroimaging, neurochemical and genetic studies. Neuropsychological studies indicate deficiencies in certain executive functions. Psychophysiological studies indicate that arousal in PG is of importance when reward is present. Neuroimaging studies point to abnormalities in brain functioning. Recent research into the neurochemistry of PG indicates that abnormalities exist in different neurotransmitter systems. Finally, genetic studies indicate th

The current article is a continuation of a previous article (Leaf, Uys & Louw 1997) suggesting that alternatives to the current traditional perceptions of learning and therapeutic methods are essential if learning institutions are to enable learners to move successfully into the next millenium. The need for the speech-language therapist to adopt a non-traditional approach to learning and to change from a language instructor to a learning facilitator within a consultative-collaborative role in the unique South African situation is discussed. Research results, specifically relating to how the sp

INTRODUCTION: Older people who die with a serious chronic disease are at risk of experiencing extended periods (ie, months or years) of fluctuations and deterioration in their health and well-being. Traditional categorisations of these end-of-life trajectories focus on physical functioning and often consider three types (ie, cancer, organ failure, frailty/dementia), but data supporting these categories are limited, often neglect psychological, social and existential domains of health and well-being and provide little information on the extent and determinants of variation in end-of-life trajec

BACKGROUND: Chronological age and conventional clinical risk factors incompletely capture physiological heterogeneity among older adults undergoing major surgery. Multisystem vulnerability involving inflammation, nutritional reserve, physical function, sleep-circadian regulation, psychological status, and cognitive performance may influence postoperative recovery and long-term outcomes. Whether an integrated multidomain physiological vulnerability phenotype can characterize perioperative risk and recovery patterns remains uncertain.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 450 adults aged ≥

IMPORTANCE: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are pervasive problems in novice training environments. Evaluation of modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors of MSKI risk prior to entry into these environments is largely understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To provide military leaders, civilian and military clinicians, and physical training instructors with an MSKI risk model for identifying low-, moderate-, and high-risk profiles among individuals starting US Army Basic Combat Training (BCT) or a physical training program.

BACKGROUND: Chronic psychological distress is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and investigators have posited inflammatory factors may be centrally involved in these relationships. However, mechanistic evidence and molecular underpinnings of these processes remain unclear, and data are particularly sparse among women. This study examined if a metabolite profile linked with distress was associated with increased CVD risk and inflammation-related risk factors.
METHODS: A plasma metabolite-based distress score (MDS) of twenty chronic psychological distress-related m

BACKGROUND: Exercise addiction (EA) represents an emerging mental health issue among athletic communities, manifested by compulsive exercise with negative psychological and physiological consequences. Although EA phenotypically coincides with overtraining syndrome and burnout, no study has explored this athlete mental health continuum in recreational athletes, especially regarding comorbid psychological distress and maladaptive food choice motivations.
OBJECTIVE: To explore EA risk as an athlete mental health concern among Jordanian recreational athletes, examining the EAI screening-positive

PURPOSE: Non-pharmacological interventions like physical activity may preserve cognition, slow its decline, and reduce behavioral/psychological symptoms associated with cognitive impairment (CI). This review synthesizes evidence on swimming's effects on cognitive functioning in older adults and additionally reports on other health outcomes and the drivers, facilitators, and barriers for participation.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Four databases (Medline, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, Sco

BACKGROUND: Mouth breathing (MB) and incompetent lip seal (ILS) are common oral dysfunctions with potential repercussions for dentofacial development, systemic health, and psychological well-being. Although related, MB and ILS represent distinct conditions: ILS denotes difficulty maintaining lip closure at rest, whereas MB concerns the route of respiration. Despite growing recognition of their physical impacts, few studies have examined how MB and ILS are related to psychological stress in young adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 567 Japanese university students aged

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) experience occupational stress, which increases their vulnerability to psychological disorders such as depression. Depression among ICU nurses not only affects their mental well-being but may also impair the quality of patient care. Two psychological factors, fear of missing out (FoMO) and rumination, have been proposed as psychological contributors to depression. However, their predictive roles among ICU nurses remain insufficiently explored.
AIM: To evaluate the predictive roles of FoMO and rumination in depression among ICU nurses.
