Visual motion imagery neurofeedback based on the hMT+/V5 complex: evidence for a feedback-specific neural circuit involving neocortical and cerebellar regions.

OBJECTIVE: Current approaches in neurofeedback/brain-computer interface research often focus on identifying, on a subject-by-subject basis, the neural regions that are best suited for self-driven modulation. It is known that the hMT+/V5 complex, an early visual cortical region, is recruited during explicit and implicit motion imagery, in addition to real motion perception. This study tests the feasibility of training healthy volunteers to regulate the level of activation in their hMT+/V5 complex using real-time fMRI neurofeedback and visual motion imagery strategies. APPROACH: We functionally…

New physical examination tests for lumbar spondylolisthesis and instability: low midline sill sign and interspinous gap change during lumbar flexion-extension motion.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spondylolisthesis (LS) and lumbar instability (LI) are common disorders in patients with low back or lumbar radicular pain. However, few physical examination tests for LS and LI have been reported. In the study described herein, new physical examination tests for LS and LI were devised and evaluated for their validity. The test for LS was designated "low midline sill sign", and that for LI was designated "interspinous gap change" during lumbar flexion-extension motion. METHODS: The validity of the low midline sill sign was evaluated in 96 patients with low back or lumbar ra…

Accuracy for predicting adhesion between meningioma and the brain by using brain surface motion imaging: comparison between single and double acquisition methods.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of adhesions between the brain and the meningioma is an important factor that determines the success of total surgical removal. Brain surface motion imaging enables assessment of the dynamics of brain surface motion. A subtraction image of pulse-gated heavily T2-weighted images in different phases of the cardiac cycle provides a stripe pattern on the surface of the pulsating brain. Thus, the lack of a stripe pattern on the surface of extraaxial tumor indicates the presence of tumor-brain adhesion. The purpose of the present experiment was to evaluate the accuracy of …

Diffusion tensor fiber tractography of the optic radiation: analysis with 6-, 12-, 40-, and 81-directional motion-probing gradients, a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Knowing the exact location of the optic radiation preoperatively is important for surgery of the temporal lobe. We hypothesized that a greater number of motion-probing gradients (MPGs) would provide better results of diffusion tensor (DT) fiber tractography of the optic radiation. To test this hypothesis, this study evaluated differences in DT fiber tractography of the optic radiation under different MPG settings. METHODS: DT images were obtained in 12 healthy volunteers (7 men, 5 women) with a mean age of 32 years (range, 22-45 years) by using a 3T MR imaging scanner …

Dorsal stream deficits suggest hidden dyslexia among deaf poor readers: correlated evidence from reduced perceptual speed and elevated coherent motion detection thresholds.

Prelingual deafness and developmental dyslexia have confounding developmental effects on reading acquisition. Therefore, standard reading as … ual speed test commonly used to help identify dyslexia in hearing people. Furthermore, coherent dot motion detection thresholds, which reflect the functional status of area MT, correlated negatively with reading scores in each visual quadrant. Elevated motion thresholds for deaf poor readers were not due to general cognitive differences in IQ but were sp …

[Current possibilities in time-motion echocardiography. Part 2: Cardiomyopathies, right-left ventricular volume overload, coronary disease, selected echocardiographic diagnosis, prosthetic heart valves].

Important information, needed in the judgement of congenital or acquired heart disease, can be obtained by means of time-motion-echocardiography. It is also occasionally a main factor in the diagnosis of pericardiac effusion, cardiac tumors, mitral valve prolapse or hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. One of the key values is the possibility for undangerous and numerous use in repeated examinations needed in observing and evaluating a patient's development or recovery from a cardiomyopathy or after placement of a prosthetic heart valve.

A semi analytical simulation and Bayesian Regularization technique for thermophoretic particle deposition in radiative nanofluid flow with Brownian motion and Stefan blowing impacts.

By using the computational power of Bayesian Regularization Optimizer Supervised Neural Networks (BRO-SNNs), this semi-analytical model, which investigates thermophoretic particle deposition in a Boger nanofluid flow over an inclined sheet using Brownian motion and Stefan blowing, has important applications in advanced heat management and materials processing. It provides a key framework for enhancing heat exchanger designs, demonstrating how controlled nanoparticle deposition can improve heat transfer or avoid surface fouling. The findings are immediately applicable to coating and thin-film m…

Biokinetic insights into the hip-spine relationship: no correlation between hip strength or flexibility and altered pelvic motion in patients with low back pain.

PURPOSE: The spine and hips are biomechanically interconnected, and disorders affecting both are often categorized under hip-spine syndrome. This study explores the link between pelvic motion impairments and hip functional characteristics, specifically hip strength and flexibility, in low back pain patients with increased contralateral pelvic drop and anterior tilt during gait. The hypothesis was that hip strength and flexibility would correlate with pelvic gait kinematics. METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed previously collected data from a clinical motion analysis lab…

Repeated static stretching was more effective for increasing range of motion and decreasing passive stiffness than a combination of a thermal agent with static stretching.

Combining static stretching (SS) and thermal agents could be beneficial for improving range of motion (ROM) and passive stiffness. However, in many previous studies, combining SS and thermal agents resulted in a longer intervention time than SS alone. Therefore, it is unclear whether the effects of SS alone and combining SS and thermal agents are similar when the total intervention time is standardized. This study aimed to compare the effects of SS alone and combine SS with thermal agents when the intervention time is standardized for 10 minutes. The participants were 14 healthy sedentary male…
