Relationship between subjective and objective fatigue and sleep characteristics in individuals with anxiety and mood disorders: An exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue and sleep disturbances are important symptoms of anxiety and mood disorders (AMD). Studies about the relationship between these variables usually rely on self-report assessments. Therefore, the aim of our exploratory study was to investigate the independent correlations between subjective and objective fatigue and sleep characteristics in individuals with AMD. METHODS: In sum, 233 individuals with AMD attending a stress-related disorders day care unit (78.5 % females, mean age 39.0 years old) participated in a cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Patient Health

Benefits of a ketogenic diet on repetitive motor behavior in mice.

Repetitive motor behaviors are repetitive and invariant movements with no apparent function, and are common in several neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, the neuropathology associated with the expression of these abnormal stereotypic movements is not well understood, and effective treatments are lacking. The ketogenic diet (KD) has been used for almost a century to treat intractable epilepsy and, more recently, disorders associated with inflexibility of behavioral routines. Here, we show a novel application for KD to reduce an abn

Is There an "Acquired Idiopathic Head-Shaking Nystagmus"?-A Discussion of Mechanisms and Clinical Implications Based on a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Head-shaking nystagmus (HSN) occurs in both peripheral and central vestibular disorders. In most cases, HSN can be attributed to an asymmetric peripheral vestibular input or a structural lesion mostly in the cerebellum affecting the central velocity storage mechanism. An isolated HSN is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a young female patient with the clinical picture of recurrent episodes of vertigo, which were induced by fast head movements and were accompanied by a severe right-beating HSN with a long time constant of 60 s. There was no other clinical and instrument-ba

Propranolol therapy for Tardive dyskinesia: A retrospective examination.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the tolerability and effectiveness of propranolol in treating tardive dyskinesia (TD). BACKGROUND: TD is a disabling, often irreversible, movement disorder that results from chronic therapy with dopamine receptor blocking drugs. There are no treatments currently approved for this disorder. Propranolol, a β-adrenergic blocker, has been reported to alleviate TD in case series and reports. METHODS: Retrospective database search of the Emory movement disorder clinic for TD patients treated with propranolol. All patients identified with at least one follow-up evaluation had

Effects of developmental hyperserotonemia on the morphology of rat dentate nuclear neurons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social cognition, disordered communication, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Furthermore, abnormalities in basic motor control, skilled motor gestures, and motor learning, are common in ASD. These characteristics have been attributed to a possible defect in the pre- and postnatal development of specific neural networks including the dentate-thalamo-cortical pathway, which is involved in motor learning, automaticity of movements, and higher cognitive functions. The current study utilized c

Detection of sleep-disordered breating with Pressure Bed Sensor.

A Pressure Bed Sensor (PBS) can offer an unobtrusive method for sleep monitoring. This study focuses on the detection of the sleep related breathing disorders using a PBS in comparison to the methods used in a sleep laboratory. A newly developed PCA modeling approach for the eight sensor signals of the PBS is evaluated using the Reduced Respiratory Amplitude Index (RRAI) as a central measure. The method computes the respiration amplitude with the Hilbert transform, and then detects the events based on a 20% amplitude reduction from the baseline signal. A similar calculation was used for the sl

Biomarkers, mechanisms, and potential prevention of catecholamine neuron loss in Parkinson disease.

This chapter is on biomarkers, mechanisms, and potential treatment of catecholamine neuron loss in Parkinson disease (PD). PD is characterized by a movement disorder from loss of nigrostriatal dopamine neurons. An intense search is going on for biomarkers of the disease process. Theoretically, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the deaminated DA metabolite, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), should be superior to other neurochemical indices of loss of central dopamine. CSF DOPAC is low in PD-even in patients with recent onset of Parkinsonism. Cardiac norepinephrine depletion is as severe

Ocular motor differences between melancholic and non-melancholic depression.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder may be a heterogeneous disorder, yet melancholic depression is the most consistently described subtype, regarded as qualitatively different to non-melancholic depression in terms of cognitive and motor impairments. Eye movement studies in depression are infrequent and findings are inconclusive. METHODS: This study employed a battery of saccadic eye movement tasks to explore reflexive saccades, as well as higher order cognitive aspects of saccades including inhibitory control and spatial working memory. Nineteen patients with major depressive disorder (9 m

Exploring the 'EarSwitch' concept: a novel ear based control method for assistive technology.

BACKGROUND: Loss of communication with loved ones and carers is one of the most isolating and debilitating effects of many neurological disorders. Assistive technology (AT) supports individuals with communication, but the acceptability of AT solutions is highly variable. In this paper a novel ear based control method of AT, the concept of 'EarSwitch', is presented. This new approach is based on detecting ear rumbling, which is the voluntary contraction of the tensor tympani muscle (TTM), resulting in observable movement of the eardrum and a dull rumbling sound. 'EarSwitch' has the potential to

BACKGROUND: Depression, the world's leading cause of disability, disproportionately affects women. Women in India, one of the most gender unequal countries worldwide, face systemic gender disadvantage that significantly increases the risk of common mental disorders. This study's objective was to examine the factors influencing women's participation in psychosocial support groups, within an approach where community members work together to collectively strengthen their community's mental health. METHODS: This community-based qualitative study was conducted from May to July 2016, across three p

Physiological Signatures Derived from Wrist Accelerometry Improve Detection of Isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is the strongest prodromal marker of α-synucleinopathies, but polysomnography is impractical for population-scale screening and questionnaires lack sufficient specificity. Beyond nocturnal movement, recently published models can derive sleep staging and other physiological signatures from raw high-resolution wrist accelerometry alone. Across four cohorts (366 subjects: 95 iRBD, 271 controls; 5,804 nights), we extracted 876 features spanning sleep macrostructure, stage-probability dynamics, motor activity, and cardiorespiratory variation. Methylphenidate-Induced Dyskinesia in a 47-Year-Old Female With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Dyskinesia describes a broad category of involuntary body movements. The presentation of dyskinesia is variable, ranging from quick jerking and twitching to smooth "dance-like" movements. Dyskinesia can occur in the extremities, face, or trunk. They can result from the use of certain medications and various medical conditions. One cause, explored in this paper, is dyskinesia as a side effect of methylphenidate use. We report on a 47-year-old woman with a past medical history of hypoplastic low-grade myelodysplastic syndrome with pancytopenia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (in remission), and ge

REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Rapid eye movement sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome is a rare condition marked by abnormal sinus arrest or atrioventricular conduction disturbance blocks during rapid eye movement sleep unassociated with sleep-disordered breathing. We present a case of a young male without a cardiovascular history exhibiting pauses of up to 9.7 seconds during polysomnography. Initially referred for suspected obstructive sleep apnea due to nocturnal awakenings with shortness of breath, confusion, and dizziness. Polysomnography results were unremarkable apart from electrocardiogram findings rev

Innovation in delirium care: A standardized intervention to reverse inattention using touch and movement.

Delirium is a complex neurocognitive disorder characterized by an acute disturbance in attention, awareness, and perception. It is a dangerous syndrome that is independently associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality, inpatient complications, and is a predictor of long-term cognitive dysfunction. Although delirium can occur in persons of all ages, the prevalence among and impact on older adults is particularly significant. Current gold standard approaches for delirium include treating medical precipitants and physiological perturbations and optimizing the environment using multico

Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome due to unilateral opercular infarction-A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Unilateral opercular lesions can result in Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome, which is marked by acute anarthria, automatic-voluntary movement dissociation-most notably the absence of voluntary facial and tongue movements-and a generally better prognosis. Better patient outcomes are mostly dependent on early detection, management, and rehabilitation. ABSTRACT: Opercular syndrome is a rare neurological disorder caused by bilateral or unilateral lesions of the operculum that result in symptoms related to speech and swallowing difficulties with dissociation of automatic-voluntary
