Socio-environmental risk factors for medically-attended agricultural injuries in Wisconsin dairy farmers.

BACKGROUND: Accidents are common in the agricultural industry, particularly among dairy farmers. How said farmers get hurt is well established, but far less is known about how distal, socio-environmental factors influence injuries. This study examined associations between medically-attended agricultural injuries and: (1) personal sociodemographic characteristics, and (2) farm environment features and general safety practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was implemented with linked data from electronic health records on prior agricultural injuries that occurred between 01/01/2002-12/31/2

Cancer incidence among Minnesota taconite mining industry workers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate cancer incidence among Minnesota taconite mining workers. METHODS: We evaluated cancer incidence between 1988 and 2010 in a cohort of 40,720 Minnesota taconite mining workers used between 1937 and 1983. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by comparing numbers of incident cancers with frequencies in the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System. SIRs for lung cancer by histologic subtypes were also estimated. We adjusted for out-of-state migration and conducted a probabilistic bias analysis for smoking-related cancers. RESULT

Predictive factors of occupational noise-induced hearing loss in Spanish workers: A prospective study.

The purpose of our study was to identify the main factors associated with objective noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), as indicated by abnormal audiometric testing, in Spanish workers exposed to occupational noise in the construction industry. We carried out a prospective study in Tenerife, Spain, using 150 employees exposed to occupational noise and 150 age-matched controls who were not working in noisy environments. The variables analyzed included sociodemographic data, noise-related factors, types of hearing protection, self-report hearing loss, and auditory-related symptoms (e.g., tinnitus

Therapists' experiences with implementing new documentation practices for low back pain in electronic health care records: an interview study.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice is constantly changing with new guidelines being published, changes in patients' preferences but also by new qualitative requirements for therapists and institutional surveys on delivered care. Electronic health records (EHR) are used for all these purposes. We involved physiotherapists and occupational therapists in an intervention to change documentation practice in their electronic health record for low back pain (LBP) and later evaluated the feasibility of the new health records. The aim of the present study was to explore therapists' experiences working with t

Perspectives on Turnover and Workforce Shortages in Community Behavioral Health: Implications for Policy and Research.

There is a high rate of worker turnover in public mental health settings, contributing to a critical provider shortage with serious implications for mental healthcare access, particularly for low-income and underserved populations. These challenges unfold within strained public mental health systems characterized by chronic underfunding, high caseloads, and administrative demands, all of which exacerbate workforce instability. The primary objective of this study was to qualitatively examine public mental health workers' perspectives on factors influencing turnover and experiences of ongoing wo

The role of social determinants of health on disease outcomes in axial spondyloarthritis: A narrative review.

This review provides a narrative exploration of the literature on various social determinants of health that influence outcomes in axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA). By using the PROGRESS-Plus framework (place of residence, race, occupation, gender/sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status, social capital, age), this review discusses how these factors have been studied and their impact on disease outcomes in axSpA. The findings suggest that various patient-level factors (e.g. female sex, blue-collar jobs, low educational level) and country-level factors (e.g. low-income countries) associate

Introduction to the Special Issue: Opioids and the Workplace - Risk Factors and Solutions.

The workplace has been a neglected element in the national response to the opioid crisis. This ignores that workplace safety and health and drug policies have become important factors in opioid use disorder among workers. This results from physical or emotional pain related to workplace injuries, illnesses, and stress, and through punitive workplace drug policies, failure to address stigma, and inadequate access to treatment and recovery resources. This comprehensive New Solutions special issue encompasses timely cutting-edge research, commentaries, activism, and calls for action on primary pr

Preparation, certification and interlaboratory analysis of workplace air filters spiked with high-fired beryllium oxide.

Occupational sampling and analysis for multiple elements is generally approached using various approved methods from authoritative government sources such as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as consensus standards bodies such as ASTM International. The constituents of a sample can exist as unidentified compounds requiring sample preparation to be chosen appropriately, as in the case of beryllium in the form of beryllium oxide (BeO). An interlaborator

Biomedical waste management in veterinary medicine and its impact on the environment: A comprehensive review.

Biomedical waste (BMW) management is a crucial aspect of both human and veterinary healthcare to prevent environmental contamination and transmission of infectious diseases. Veterinary BMW, although often overlooked, comprises hazardous materials such as infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, radioactive substances, and pathological remains. Despite its significant contribution to hazardous waste, veterinary BMW often lacks sufficient regulatory focus and compliance. Various countries have implemented regulatory frameworks, including India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules (2
