BACKGROUND: Transverse problems can be exacerbated by highly compensated occlusion in patients with skeletal asymmetry, which makes pre-surgical decompensation harder to achieve.
OBJECTIVE: This case report describes a case of combined orthognathic surgery with facial asymmetry. We used pre-orthodontic surgical simulation to visualize the goal for presurgical orthodontics, planning for a one-jaw surgical treatment option.
METHODS: The planned asymmetric expansion was performed using a maxillary skeletal expander (MSE II) with surgical corticopuncture over only the left side before MSE activa…

Severe dentofacial deformities require both orthodontics and surgical management to repair. Modern mandibular orthognathic surgery commonly uses sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) methods to treat patients. However, complications like neurosensory disturbances and temporomandibular joint disorders are common following both procedures. In 1992, Choung introduced the intraoral vertico-sagittal ramus osteotomy (IVSRO) which led to a decrease in postoperative complications. The 'straight' IVSRO or Choung's type II osteotomy has a 'condylotomy' effec…

The present case report documents the hitherto unusual application of camouflage orthodontics in one of our patients. Our female patient had previously been treated orthodontically alio loco and had also undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. She presented with TMJ complaints, with associated pains. Despite a dental Class I and centrally seated condyles, her discs had prolapsed anteriorly without reduction and she had developed a massive degenerative-inflammatory TMJ disease. Skeletally, she was a Class II case despite previous orthognathic surgery. In addition, there was also an initial …

INTRODUCTION: Solitary maxillary or mandibular bone cysts are rare benign lesions. They are usually localized in the mandible of young men. In some cases, a traumatic risk factor can be documented.
OBSERVATION: A young 13-year-old female patient consulted in the orthodontics unit. An orthopantomogram showed a large cystic lesion in the ramus and posterior part of the left mandible corpus. No reossification of the cavity was observed one year after curettage. A second curettage was performed combined with PRF filling. Six months later, the cavity was completely reossified.
DISCUSSION: Curetta…

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to identify significant factors affecting the spontaneous angular changes of impacted mandibular third molars as a result of second molar protraction. Temporary skeletal anchorage devices in the missing mandibular first molar (ML-6) or missing deciduous mandibular second molar (ML-E) with missing succedaneous premolar spaces provided traction.
METHODS: Forty-one mandibular third molars of 34 patients (10 male and 24 female; mean age 18.3 ± 3.7 years) that erupted after second molar protraction were included in this study. They were classified into upright (U) an

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether repetitive opening and closure of self-ligating bracket clips can cause plastic deformation of the clip.
METHODS: Three types of active/interactive ceramic self-ligating brackets (n = 20) were tested: In-Ovation C, Quicklear and WOW. A standardized controlled device performed 500 cycles of opening and closure movements of the bracket clip with proper instruments and techniques adapted as recommended by the manufacturer of each bracket type. Two tensile tests, one before and one after the repetitive cycles, were performed to assess the sti

Tweed-Merrifield directional force technology with microimplant anchorage is a useful treatment approach for a patient with a Class I or Class II dentoalveolar-protrusion malocclusion. It can create a favorable counterclockwise skeletal change and a balanced face without patient compliance. In contrast, headgear force with high-pull J-hook can obtain similar results but depends on patient cooperation. This case report presents the treatment of a patient with Class I canine and molar relationships, a convex profile with retrognathic mandible and marked lip protrusion, and excessive lower anteri

INTRODUCTION: The effect of any sterilization methods (cold [chemical] or hot) on load-deflection characteristics of aesthetic coated archwires has not yet been investigated. Thus, we assessed it.
METHODS: In this experimental in vitro study, 90-coated archwires from 3 brands were purchased. Ten wires from each brand (n=30) underwent cold and 10 underwent hot sterilization, while 10 left unsterilized as negative controls. Load-deflection curves were established for each wire (as five 0.2mm intervals between 1.0 and 1.8mm displacements), using a three-bracket test. After determining the platea

Because of their multifactorial etiologies, dental and skeletal open bites are among the most difficult malocclusions to treat to a successful and stable result. Etiologic factors include vertical maxillary excess, skeletal pattern, abnormalities in dental eruption, and tongue-thrust problems. The purpose of this article was to report the treatment of an adult patient with a lateral open bite and a unilateral posterior crossbite. The treatment involved nonextraction therapy, including intermaxillary elastics, to obtain dentoalveolar extrusion in the region of the lateral open bite. The treatme
