Injuries to the shoulder are very common in athletes. In addition to common causes of shoulder pain in the athlete, such as instability, it is important to consider less common causes. Familiarity with these uncommon entities will lead to appropriate diagnosis and treatment in a timely fashion.

There are many causes of knee pain in the athlete. Clearly, common things, such as meniscal tears, ligament sprains, contusions, and patellofemoral dysfunction, are common. The infrequency of other entities, however, should not make the physician complacent. A thorough history and physical examination will, in most cases, elicit inconsistencies in the occasional athlete presenting with one of these uncommon causes of knee pain (Table 1). Diagnosing these uncommon causes, when they do present to the health care provider, allows for early and correct treatment with a more rapid return to sports.

Simple explanations provided to children and their parents before a dermatologic procedure is attempted will decrease the time it takes to perform the procedure and make it a less difficult experience for all concerned. The dermatologist should always consider the availability of less painful but effective methods when treating children.

The literature on female dyspareunia is reviewed with an emphasis on description and classification, incidence and prevalence, etiological factors, and treatment approaches. The research is found to be plagued with methodological problems and characterized by a persistent dichotomization of issues into physiological and psychological categories. A systematized and integrated approach to the study of coital pain is proposed.

A 45-yr-old Japanese woman with multiseptate gallbladder, a quite rare congenital anomaly, is presented. Her epigastric pain, with a 35-yr history, was relieved by cholecystectomy. The septa were present only at the neck portion of the gallbladder and were lined by mucosal epithelium containing a muscular layer continuous to the gallbladder wall. A review of 26 patients (including the present case) reported in the world literature revealed that only two of them had such partial involvement at the infundibulum of the gallbladder.

To understand the surgical approach to acute abdominal pain, the internist must be familiar with common presentations of most abdominal emergencies; these emergencies include acute appendicitis, acute gall bladder disease (biliary colic, acute cholecystitis, and acute pancreatitis), ischemic bowel disease and ischemic colitis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and intestinal obstruction. We report the clinical features observed in 10 children, ranging from 5 1/12 to 13 7/12 years of age, with intestinal infections caused by Blastocystis hominis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is frequently regarded as a painless condition. A review of the literature reveals that approximately 2/3 of the patients with multiple sclerosis will experience painful syndromes during the course of disease and that these are associated with the disease.
