The term masochism has undergone an evaluation since first being introduced solely in relation to sexual perversion by Kraft Ebing in 1906. Masochism can be defined as any behavior that is repetitively self destructive. Relationships in which partners sacrifice themselves and their own best interests can be considered masochistic. There is a difference between a normal pattern of falling in love and a masochistic pattern. Histology records from 63 nephrectomies were reviewed; 22 patients had unilateral totally dysplastic kidneys and 5 had polar or segmental dysplasia. AgNOR staining technique was applied to facilitate the pathologic differential diagnosis of 74 breast tumors and 95 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). The results showed that the mean AgNOR count per nucleus was significantly different between benign and malignant tumors (P less than 0.01). After examination of 18 patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathies the authors have arrived at a conclusion that thyroid pathology is the most frequent sign of autoimmune polyendocrinopathies and is noted earlier than other endocrine disorders. A course of thyropathies is characterized by resistance to conservative therapy and recurrences after surgical interventions. A high hereditary aggravation of patients with autoimmune polyendocrinopathies requires careful investigation of their relatives for early detection of endocrine pathology.

Two rare cases of pathological calcification affecting the face and neck are reported. The first case, a 32-year-old male, developed massive calcification of the lymphoid tissues in the preauricular, submandibular and cervical regions. In the second case, a 56-year-old male, a radiographic diagnosis of bilateral multiple miliary osteomas of the cheeks was made. Although dystrophic calcification of lymph nodes and salivary glands is common, it is important to establish any underlying disease.

Systemic mycoses were found in 19 (4.7%) of 406 calves less than 6 months old which were autopsied during the past 10 years. Alimentary mycosis occurred in 12 (63.2%) of 19 cases. A 23 year old brain injured male developed a pathological gambling disorder in response to social isolation which resulted from frontal lobe disinihibitory behaviors. The case illustrates the difficulties encountered in management and treatment where an impulse control disorder is superimposed on, and compounded by, organic-based frontal lobe impulsivity.

Pathological gambling was officially defined and recognized as a psychiatric illness by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980. This survey reports the results of a province-wide study in Quebec based on telephone interviews using standardized assessment instruments with 1,002 subjects. The current prevalence of pathological gambling is 1.2%. The results also show that 88% of the respondents have gambled at least once in their life. The implications of these results for the prevention and treatment of this debilitating disorder are discussed.

Stucco keratoses are benign acquired papular warty lesions which usually occur on the distal parts of the lower limbs of elderly men. Their nature and pathogenesis are uncertain. Eight patients with multiple stucco keratoses who presented to the Cardiff Dermatology Department over an 18-month period were studied in an attempt to characterize these lesions. A pathological study was conducted on four patients with nephroblastoma associated with aniridia. The age at diagnosis. was one year in three cases and 4 years in one case. Chromosomal analysis was performed in three cases, and showed 11p13 deletion in all. Each nephroblastoma consisted of metanephric blastemal, epithelial, and mesenchymal cells. Twenty four cases of intrauterine death occurred in 3,834 deliveries from Jan. 1985 to Dec. 1987 in our hospital. The causes of fetal deaths were analysed on the basis of maternal complications and pathologic findings. 198 preterm delivery placentas of 28 weeks to less than 37 weeks pregnancy were analyzed.
