Modified firefly algorithm for workflow scheduling in cloud-edge environment.

BACKGROUND: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is the most common cause of recurrent fever in childhood. Although normal growth and development are included in the diagnostic criteria, this assumption has not been systematically evaluated in controlled studies. This study aimed to compare growth patterns and developmental screening outcomes between children with PFAPA and healthy controls. METHODS: A total of 138 children were enrolled, including 69 patients diagnosed with PFAPA according to the modified Marshall criteria and 69 age- and sex-matche

KONTAKT® social skills group training for Australian adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

While there is a large body of evidence drawn from randomised controlled trials supporting the efficacy of SSGT in autistic adolescents, the control arms of these studies are almost exclusively treated either as usual or waitlist. Addressing this limitation, 90 verbal autistic adolescents (70% male) aged 12-17 years (M = 13.77, SD = 1.6) with IQ > 70 participated in this pragmatic two-armed randomised controlled trial design study evaluating the efficacy of sixteen 90-min sessions of SSGT KONTAKT® (n = 46) in comparison to a manualised interactive group cooking programme (n = 44) of equal dosa

Check-list for the assessment of functional impairment in children with congenital aural atresia.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital Aural Atresia (CAA) is a deformity of the external ear and it is commonly associated with malformations of middle and inner ear and, in some cases, with other facial deformities. Very few assessment measures exist for evaluating the functional impairment in children with CAA. Purpose of this study is to introduce and describe an assessment Checklist, (nominated FOS Checklist) that covers feeding abilities (F), oralmotor skills (O), communication/language development (S) in children with CAA. FOS wants to offer a range of assessment providing a profile of the child in com

The long-term outcome of extremely preterm (<28 weeks' gestational age) infants with and without severe retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is associated with an increased risk for ophthalmologic morbidity, but the long-term impact in other domains is less clear. The aim of the current study was to determine whether severe ROP was related to poorer visual, cognitive, and educational outcomes in a representative sample of EP adolescents, and whether this persisted after adjusting for confounding neonatal risk factors. METHOD: One hundred and eighty extremely preterm (EP; <28 weeks) adolescents (17-18 years) were assessed on a range of neurodevelopmental measures, including visual

Cognitive Speed–Accuracy Dissociation in Multiple Myeloma: A Cross‑Sectional Study

Abstract Purpose This study examined whether adults with Multiple Myeloma (MM) show measurable cognitive differences compared with neurologically healthy peers. The primary research question focused on identifying domain-specific cognitive deficits and determining whether standard screening tools adequately capture cognitive abilities. Methods A cross-sectional design compared 45 adults with MM to 40 age-matched controls. Participants completed 40–50 minutes of cognitive and psychological assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), validated measures of mood and daily func

Inclusion of underserved young people in digital public health interventions for mental health, sexual health and substance use: A systematic review and intervention component analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This review examined the design features of digital public health interventions for mental health, sexual health and substance use that may affect equitable reach, engagement, and effectiveness for underserved young people. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase and PsycINFO for relevant systematic reviews published since 2020. We assessed them using the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies guidelines. We extracted randomised trials from six reviews and used them to inform searches in PsycINFO and CENTRAL for additional trials. We included mental health, sexual h

Veterinary Students' Perceptions of Online Versus Face-to-Face Problem-Based Learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online learning across higher education, including the use of digital online platforms to support small group teaching. While previous research suggests that online teaching can promote engagement and student interactions, limited evidence exists regarding suitability for problem-based group learning (PBL) centered on clinical case discussions. This study investigated veterinary students' perceptions of online versus face-to-face PBL environments. A two-part questionnaire was distributed to 450 students: part 1 during compulsory online delivery

Gait Characteristics in Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Secondary Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a chronic inflammatory condition that can disrupt joint function and biomechanics, often leading to altered gait patterns. When coexisting with secondary scoliosis-a common musculoskeletal complication in children with JIA-postural and movement impairments may be further exacerbated. However, limited research has investigated the combined impact of JIA and secondary scoliosis on gait characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate gait parameters in children diagnosed with JIA and secondary scoliosis and to compare them with age-matched healthy

Effectiveness of e-learning modules in community-based tuberculosis awareness programs.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in India, which reported about a quarter of the world's TB cases in 2023. Awareness programs are vital for early diagnosis and treatment, yet reaching rural populations in states like Bihar is challenging because of low digital literacy, poor internet coverage and a reliance on shared devices. This intervention study compared facilitator-supported e-learning modules with a more informal mobile-based education approach to assess which method better improves community TB knowledge. Adults from rural and semi-urban Bihar were assigned at the

Is Knowing Words Enough? Assessing Vocabulary in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Vocabulary skills in children are typically measured with norm-referenced assessments of receptive and expressive vocabulary. Language sample analysis is an alternative method of examining vocabulary actually produced in communicative events and may be better suited to exposing subtle vocabulary weaknesses. Here, we examine the relationship between norm-referenced vocabulary testing and language sample analysis in preschool children, both children with typical hearing (CTH) and children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). METHOD: Expressive and receptive vocabulary and spontaneous

Qualitative investigation of academic routines and mental health among medical students following coronavirus vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Despite being essential for protecting public health, the restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic have negatively affected the physical and mental well-being of medical students. Furthermore, most students had negative perceptions of full-time online courses. The COVID-19 vaccine plays a vital role in preventing the collapse of healthcare systems and mitigating stress-related illnesses. The objective of this study was to explore medical students' self-reported feelings, symptoms, and daily routines across two key phases: the period of social isolation and the subsequen

Prevalence of Low Back Pain and Disc Degeneration in Elite Cross-Country Skiers: A Comparative Study With Non-Athlete Controls.

Intensive training in competitive sports during childhood and adolescence may increase the risk of low back pain (LBP). While disc degeneration (DD) is a known contributor to LBP, its occurrence among elite cross-country skiers has not been previously assessed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study aimed to compare the prevalence of LBP and DD in elite cross-country skiers and age-matched non-athlete controls. Forty-four elite skiers and 71 controls underwent a structured interview assessing LBP without specific trauma, a clinical examination, and lumbar spine MRI. Skiers also comp

A meta-analysis of data-driven cognitive subgroups in bipolar disorder.

The delineation of cognitive subgroups of bipolar disorder (BD) might be helpful for identifying biologically valid subtypes of this disorder. This meta-analysis identified peer-reviewed literature on studies investigating cognitive subgroups of BD with data-driven clustering methods. Relevant studies were searched in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed using R software. A total of 14 cross-sectional studies including euthymic or mildly symptomatic patients with BD were included in the current meta-analysis. The available studies have consistently sup

Skeletal muscle contributions to reduced fitness in cystic fibrosis youth.

BACKGROUND: Increased maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) is beneficial in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) but remains lower compared to healthy peers. Intrinsic metabolic deficiencies within skeletal muscle (muscle "quality") and skeletal muscle size (muscle "quantity") are both proposed as potential causes for the lower V̇O2max, although exact mechanisms remain unknown. This study utilises gold-standard methodologies to control for the residual effects of muscle size from V̇O2max to address this "quality" vs. "quantity" debate. METHODS: Fourteen children (7 CF vs. 7 age- and sex-matched cont
