Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma (PMM), and primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC) and reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH) of the peritoneum. Immunohistochemical and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analyses.

AIMS: Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma (PMM) is an uncommon tumour, accounting for only 7-9% of all mesotheliomas in Japan. Differential diagnosis between PMM and primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC), a high-grade serous carcinoma, may be difficult, and separating reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH) from PMM can be even more challenging. METHODS: To help differentiate PMM from PPSC and RMH, we used immunohistochemistry to examine mesothelial-associated markers (calretinin, AE1/AE3, CK5/6, CAM5.2, D2-40, WT-1, HBME1, thrombomodulin), adenocarcinoma-associated markers (CEA, BerEP4, MO

Fluorescence Imaging After Indocyanine Green Injection for Detection of Peritoneal Metastases in Patients Undergoing Cytoreductive Surgery for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis From Colorectal Cancer: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of fluorescence imaging (FI) using an intraoperative injection of free indocyanine green (ICG) in the detection of peritoneal metastases (PM) due to colorectal cancer (CRC). BACKGROUND: A large proportion of patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy will have local recurrence. This is, in part, related to the presence of small undetected nodules in the peritoneal cavity. Near-infrared FI-guided surgery has provided new opportunities for detection of nonvisible lesions during cancer surgery.

Higher rate and earlier peritonitis in Aboriginal patients compared to non-Aboriginal patients with end-stage renal failure maintained on peritoneal dialysis in Australia: analysis of ANZDATA.

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal patients maintained on peritoneal dialysis (PD) have a higher rate of technique failure than any other racial group in Australia. Peritonitis accounts for the bulk of these technique failures, but it is uncertain whether the increased risk of peritonitis in Aboriginal patients was independent of associated comorbid conditions, such as diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Using data collected by the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA), peritonitis rates and time to first peritonitis were compared between Aboriginal (n = 238) and non-Aboriginal pat…

[Perforation in Crohn's ileitis and its consequences in the natural history of disease. 2. Consequences of perforation in the peritoneal cavity: diffuse septic peritonitis, abscesses, external and internal fistulas].

Perforation of Crohn's ileitis occurring in the peritoneal cavity is always free perforation, but it causes usually a localized peritonitis, i.e. an abscess, and only in rare cases a diffuse septic peritonitis for the reasons expounded in the Part 1. Diffuse septic peritonitis has the common features of all perforative peritonitis; its surgical treatment must be ileocolic resection, simple suture of perforation being a serious mistake. Abscesses develop: as regards the ileum, about 30-45 cm from the ileo-caecal valve; as regards the abdominal cavity, in the right iliac fossa or in the pelvis, …

Peritonitis, moderate ascites and hepatitis due to infection with Chlamydia trachomatis and Epstein-Barr virus in a young woman. Diagnosis by polymerase chain reaction from peritoneal tissue.

Perihepatitis with ascites is a well-known presentation of pelvic inflammatory disease due to Chlamydia trachomatis. Diagnosis is based on the presence of IgM antibodies or positive culture from cervical samples or ascites. We describe a young woman with a concomitant infection of C. trachomatis and Epstein-Barr virus presenting with fever, hepatitis and ascites. Cultures remained negative and other tests were--at first--inconclusive. Diagnosis was ultimately established by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RNA in situ hybridisation of peritoneal tissue obtained at laparoscopy.

Predicting outcomes in equine peritonitis: Multivariable analysis of admission and post-admission data from a UK hospital population.

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is life-threatening, and limited information exists regarding outcomes and predictors of survival. OBJECTIVES: To report short- and long-term outcomes in horses diagnosed with peritonitis and identify factors associated with survival. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational. METHODS: Data were obtained for horses admitted to a UK referral hospital between 2010 and 2024 diagnosed with peritonitis (peritoneal fluid nucleated cell count >10 × 109/L). Short- and long-term morbidity and mortality were assessed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify fact…

Ursodeoxycholic acid inhibits feline infectious peritonitis virus infection through activating JAK-STAT signaling pathway-induced type I interferon.

UNLABELLED: Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), a highly pathogenic subtype of feline coronavirus, is characterized by antigenic variability and immune evasion, resulting in limited efficacy of existing clinical therapeutic regimens. In recent years, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a hydrophilic bile acid derivative, has been found to have broad antiviral activity. Based on this, this study significantly improved the replication efficiency of FIPV by constructing a CRFK-PHBLV-N cell line that can stably express the FIPV N protein; UDCA had obvious antiviral effects, and signaling pathways…

Development and Physicochemical Stability of an Oral GS-441524 Suspension for Weight-Adjusted Treatment of Feline Infectious Peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: GS-441524 is a key antiviral agent for the treatment of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), yet no authorized veterinary medicinal product is currently available. OBJECTIVES: To provide a quality-assured alternative to unregulated products, we developed a 50 mg/mL oral suspension and evaluated its physicochemical stability. METHODS: Three independent batches were prepared using Syrspend SF pH 4.0 and a veterinary flavouring agent. Stability was assessed at 5°C, 25°C/60% RH and 40°C/75% RH (transport simulation) over 12 weeks. In-use stability was evaluated for 28 days following …

Capnocytophaga canimorsus peritonitis in a simultaneous liver-kidney transplant recipient: A case report and review of the literature.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fastidious, capnophilic Gram-negative rod transmitted through exposure to the oral secretions of domesticated dogs and cats and may cause severe infection in immunocompromised hosts. Bacterial peritonitis due to C. canimorsus is rare and has been reported primarily in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis. We describe a 66-year-old man status post simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation who presented with septic shock, neutropenia, acute kidney injury, and worsening ascites. Peritoneal fluid analysis demonstrated neutrophilic ascites consistent with bacter…

Single-site mutation (M1058L) of feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) spike protein in domestic cats of Northern Vietnam.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) has two biotypes: feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), which typically causes mild intestinal infections, and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), a virulent form associated with a fatal systemic and infectious disease in cats, known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). The differentiation between FECV and FIPV has been linked to specific mutations, most notably M1058L and S1060A, in the spike (S) protein. These mutations are believed to enhance macrophage tropism and facilitate systemic dissemination. However, the precise contribution of these mutations to FI…

Trauma-Associated Perforation of a Duodenal Ulcer With Concomitant Acute Appendicitis Presenting As Generalized Peritonitis: A Case Report.

A perforated duodenal ulcer is a potentially life-threatening surgical emergency that may present with generalized peritonitis and require prompt operative management. Although most cases are related to peptic ulcer disease, clinical presentation following blunt abdominal trauma can create diagnostic uncertainty, particularly when imaging findings are non-specific or suggest an alternative intra-abdominal source. We report the case of a 68-year-old man with no significant medical history who presented with progressive abdominal pain four days after a ground-level fall. Physical examination rev…

Asymptomatic Colonic Diverticulosis With Sigmoid Colon Perforation and Barium Peritonitis After an Upper Gastrointestinal Series: A Case Report.

Upper gastrointestinal series (UGIS) remains an important modality for gastric cancer screening; however, intestinal perforation after this examination, although rare, can result in life-threatening barium peritonitis. We report a case of sigmoid colon perforation after UGIS in a 47-year-old woman with previously asymptomatic colonic diverticulosis and discuss its implications for preexamination risk assessment. She developed abdominal pain two days after undergoing UGIS during a routine health checkup. Computed tomography showed free air and intraperitoneal barium leakage. Emergency surgery r…

Cefoxitin versus cefotaxime as empirical treatment of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in liver cirrhotic patients: randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a severe complication of cirrhosis requiring immediate empirical antibiotic therapy. Third-generation cephalosporins are the traditional agents of choice; however, increasing clinical failure rates necessitate the evaluation of alternative antibiotics to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes. The aim was to investigate the efficacy of cefoxitin versus cefotaxime for SBP treatment. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 140 cirrhotic patients with community-acquired SBP at Al-Rajhy Liver University Hospital, Assiut, Egypt. Pat…

Non-O1/Non-O139 Vibrio cholerae Bacteremia Presenting as Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in Decompensated Cirrhosis: A Case Report.

Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae is an emerging invasive pathogen in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with chronic liver disease, although it is more commonly associated with mild gastrointestinal illness. A 56-year-old male with decompensated cirrhosis presented with fever, abdominal distension, and abdominal pain, suggestive of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). Ascitic fluid analysis supported SBP; however, ascitic fluid culture remained sterile. Blood culture flagged positive within 10 hours and revealed curved, Gram-negative bacilli identified as V. cholerae. Serotyp…

Peritonitis following duodenal injury due to seatbelt trauma: A case manifesting immediately post-surgery for thoracolumbar fracture-dislocation.

INTRODUCTION: Although abdominal organ damage due to motor vehicle accident is often evident immediately after the injury and urgent operation is performed, it has been reported that minor injuries such as hollow viscus may become apparent during the course of treatment and require urgent surgery. CASE REPORT: The Authors present the case of a 42-year-old female who developed peritonitis immediately after undergoing surgery for thoracolumbar fracture-dislocation caused by a traffic accident. The patient exhibited no abdominal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal wall rigidity, and…

Profile of Serum Inflammatory Biomarkers in Children with Peritonitis and their Role in Predicting the Severity and Outcome.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether the levels of serum inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein [CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6], calprotectin, and N terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide [NT-proBNP]) predict the severity and outcome in children with peritonitis. The primary objective was to evaluate the profile of these serum inflammatory biomarkers in children with peritonitis. The secondary objectives were to correlate the level of these biomarkers with pediatric sequential organ failure assessment (pSOFA) severity score at admission and predict the outcome (mo…

Differential induction of PD-L1 expression in cells infected with feline infectious peritonitis virus and feline enteric coronavirus.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal systemic disease of cats, which is caused by FIP virus (FIPV), a virulent biotype of feline coronavirus (FCoV). In a small number of cats infected with feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), virus mutation may emerge that enable infection of monocytes and macrophages, leading to the development of FIP. This cell tropism shift, along with impaired T cell response, plays a critical role in FIP development. Programmed cell death protein (PD-1) and its ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2) play crucial roles in immune responses as an immune checkpoint system. The PD-…
