The behavioral avoidance task using imaginal exposure (BATIE): a paper-and-pencil version of traditional in vivo behavioral avoidance tasks.

Behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs) have been used for decades in the assessment of specific phobias, but they also involve a number of prohibitive difficulties. This study investigated a new imaginal/self-report instrument, the Behavioral Avoidance Task Using Imaginal Exposure (BATIE), and evaluated whether it was an efficient paper-and-pencil alternative. Forty-nine adults diagnosed with specific phobias were matched to 49 participants without those particular phobias who served as control participants. The participants were 89.8% female and 79.6% Caucasian and had a mean age of 20.81 years (S

[Maternal affect regulation of mothers with a history of abuse in mother-infant-interaction].

Maternal intuitive skills can be threatened as a result of severe deprivation or unresolved trauma in the own childhood and can even be inaccessible to the mother. A mother's own childhood experience of abuse maybe a risk factor for repeated child abuse. As a follow-up study to assess the emotional availability of abused mothers it was investigated how a physical or sexual abuse appears in the mother-child interaction and communication in the context of "cycle of abuse" and whether it could give effect to it. Interactions of mothers with abuse experience were compared with those of mothers wit

Cardiac morbidity risk and depression and anxiety: a disorder, symptom and trait analysis among cardiac surgery patients.

The aim of this study was to examine depression and anxiety disorders and their characteristic symptoms (anhedonia/low positive affect and anxious arousal, respectively), along with measures of state negative affect (NA) and Type D personality, in relation to cardiac surgery related morbidity. Patients awaiting elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery (n=158; 20.9% female; 11.4% concomitant valve surgery; age M=64.7, SD=10.6) underwent the structured MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview to determine current affective disorders. Patients also completed the Mood and Anxiety Symptom

Identification of areas of functioning and disability addressed in inflammatory bowel disease-specific patient reported outcome measures.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) make it possible to assess health-status problems from the perspective of persons suffering from a disease. The objective of the paper is to examine and compare the contents of PROMs related to IBD based on the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as the frame of reference. METHODS: A systematic literature review (1999-2009) in the databases Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and CENTRAL was performed to select IBD-specific PROMs. Abstracts and full-text articles were

Anxiety sensitivity and the anxiety disorders: a meta-analytic review and synthesis.

There has been significant interest in the role of anxiety sensitivity (AS) in the anxiety disorders. In this meta-analysis, we empirically evaluate differences in AS between anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and nonclinical controls. A total of 38 published studies (N = 20,146) were included in the analysis. The results yielded a large effect size indicating greater AS among anxiety disorder patients versus nonclinical controls (d = 1.61). However, this effect was maintained only for panic disorder patients compared to mood disorder patients (d = 0.85). Panic disorder was also associated wit

Characterizing major depression phenotypes by presence and type of psychomotor disturbance in adolescents and young adults.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is phenomenologically heterogeneous, which has prompted investigation of intermediate MDD phenotypes based on specific key symptoms. Presence and type of psychomotor disturbance may be an important psychopathologic feature that differentiates clinically distinct forms of juvenile MDD. This study examined the phenotypic status of three putative MDD phenotypes in a community sample of 941 youths: (1) agitated depression (MDD with psychomotor agitation), (2) retarded depression (MDD with psychomotor retardation), and (3) agitated-retarded depression (MDD with psych

A modified DBT skills training program for oppositional defiant adolescents: promising preliminary findings.

A modified skills training component of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was implemented in a group therapy format for non-suicidal outpatient young adolescents who met criteria for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Thirty-two youths completed the 16-week program, as well as pre- and post-treatment measures. The treatment was effective not only in decreasing negative behaviors, but also in increasing positive behaviors, per caregiver report. The youths reported a significant reduction in externalizing and internalizing symptoms and in depression. Reliable change indices indicated that far

The course of depression in individuals at high and low cognitive risk for depression: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Negative cognitive styles have been shown to prospectively predict depression onset and recurrence. Research has also begun to suggest that cognitive styles may be associated with the course of depression as well. This study examined whether cognitive risk for depression onset also predicts the course of depression in a prospective design. METHODS: One hundred fifty-nine initially nondepressed participants from the Temple-Wisconsin Cognitive Vulnerability to Depression Project who experienced a depressive episode while in the study were followed prospectively for 2.5 years. Knowledge and risks of human immunodeficiency virus transmission among veterans with severe mental illness.

This study is among the first to examine knowledge about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and behavioral risks for HIV transmission among veterans with severe mental illness (SMI), a group at high risk for HIV infection. This study examined associations between accuracy of HIV knowledge, risk behaviors, and clinical and demographic characteristics in a sample of male veteran psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with SMI (N = 353). Results showed high rates of inaccurate HIV knowledge, with > 40% of patients demonstrating some inaccuracies, particularly those related to the progression and sympto

Stigmatization, physical illness and mental health in primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) causes chronic cough, sinusitis and bronchiectasis, and half of patients also show situs inversus. The genetic basis and visible and concealed chronic symptoms provide potential for stigmatization. We describe a structural equation model linking a questionnaire measure of stigmatization to sex, age, personality (Big Five), symptoms (St George's Respiratory Questionnaire), health status (SF-36) and stress (GHQ-12). Stigma did not relate to physical symptoms or health, or to situs, but correlated with mental health and the social impact of symptoms. Neuroticism,

Retaining pathological gamblers in cognitive behavior therapy through motivational enhancement: A pilot study.

Treatment for pathological gambling is in its infancy. Several cognitive and behavioral interventions have shown promise, but high attrition and relapse rates suggest that gamblers requesting treatment are not uniformly committed to change. This article describes an exploratory study with 9 severe pathological gamblers--in their majority horse race bettors--who were recruited from a community treatment center. The gamblers were treated with a hybrid intervention consisting of motivational enhancement and cognitive behavior therapy. All gamblers were retained in treatment and during a 12-month

Disorganized rhythm and synchrony: early signs of autism and Rett syndrome.

We interpret early age-related developments in intentions and socially responsive behaviour with data from home videos of infants who later develop autism or Rett syndrome. Detailed evidence is given from a micro-analytic study of videos of monozygotic twin girls at 11 months, one of whom became autistic in the second year. Changes in this twin's attention, motor tonus, initiative and emotion reduce her prospective control of movements and her anticipations in awareness compared to her sister. These changes were reflected in the child's asynchronous social behaviour, which frustrated the fathe

[Kanner autism. Course of the disorder in the 2nd and 3rd decade in 18 patients with special reference to social adjustment. Results of a qualitative retrospective study].

The development of Kanner autism in 18 patients (mean age 28 years) in their second and third decade was explored and recorded with respect to factors affecting social competence in adulthood. To validate the diagnoses, we used the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). A version of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS) was employed to assess social adaptation. On average, the individuals showed socially adaptive skills typical for healthy children at the age of 4 years and 3 months. Seventy-two percent of the autistic persons showed a characteristic pattern: they scored highest in daily

[Rett syndrome: individual differences in developmental and behavioral markers and psychosocial stress].

OBJECTIVES: Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological developmental disorder caused by a genetic mutation on the long arm of the X chromosome (Xq28). This disorder is characterized by a loss of purposeful hand use, verbal language, and specific behaviors. METHODS: Data were obtained from a survey of the parents of 83 girls on pre-verbal skills (Pre-verbal Communication Schedule), behavioral characteristics and emotional expression (Rett Syndrome Behaviour Questionnaire) and on maternal psychosocial stress (Handicap-related Problems for Parents Inventory). RESULTS: There is considerable individu

The application of the Conners' Rating Scales to a Sudanese sample: an analysis of parents' and teachers' ratings of childhood behaviour problems.

The aim of the current study was to assess the equivalence of Sudanese and North American versions of the Conners' Rating Scales. The reliability, internal consistency, factor score intercorrelation, levels of sex differences and prevalence of symptoms found with Sudanese Arabic adaptations of the parent and teacher scales were compared with previously reported data from North American studies. The scales were translated into Sudanese Arabic, backtranslated and piloted among teachers and parents. These scales were administered to parents and teachers from a stratified normative sample of 300 f

Effect of citalopram treatment on relationship between platelet serotonin functions and the Karolinska scales of personality in panic patients.

Using the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP), we investigated the effect of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram on personality traits and the relationship between personality traits and peripheral indexes for central serotonergic function in patients with panic disorder at baseline and after 6 months of treatment. The degree of anxiety and depression was assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Clinical Anxiety Scale, and the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale. A reduction in anxiety and depression scores of 75% was observed aft

Risk assessment as collective clinical judgement.

INTRODUCTION: Risk assessment occupies an increasingly important position in psychiatry. This paper contends that collective judgement is the optimal method of assessing risk. THE MEANING OF RISK: Risk has a dual meaning: emotional and judgemental. RISKS FACED BY STAFF: Assaults, threats and survival anxiety. THE EFFECTS OF DANGER ON THE GROUP: Staff wariness and resistance, attribution of blame. THE AMBIGUOUS TASK: For a group to function well it must have a clear task. Custodial roles can lead to ambiguity. THE EMOTIONS OF LARGER GROUPS: Externally directed hostility, internal homogeniz

Adjustment in children with intractable epilepsy: importance of seizure duration and family factors.

Seventy-five families of children with intractable epilepsy but without a severe learning disability (mean age 7 years 1 month, SD 2 years 6 months; range 2 to 12 years) who attended a regional paediatric neurology service, were surveyed. A postal questionnaire was used which included standardized measures of child and family adjustment; forty-eight families responded (64%; 31 males, 17 females). There was no significant difference between responders and non-responders in terms of age, sex, number of other chronic illnesses and disabilities, age at epilepsy diagnosis, seizure type, nor number

Cognitive performance and attachment patterns at four years of age in extremely low birth weight infants after early intervention.

This study aims at assessing the effects of an early occupational therapy intervention on the cognitive development and the development of attachment patterns in ELBW infants. The intervention, given weekly at home from six months to 12 months, aimed at supporting parent-child interaction and enhancing motor control and coordination. The study population consisted of 100 ELBW infants matched in pairs in accordance to their pre-perinatal risk scores and allocated successively to intervention or non-intervention groups. Cognitive development was assessed with the Bayley Scales at age two and wit
