The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and especially anterior cingulate cortex is central to higher cognitive function and many clinical disorders, yet its basic function remains in dispute. Various competing theories of mPFC have treated effects of errors, conflict, error likelihood, volatility and reward, using findings from neuroimaging and neurophysiology in humans and monkeys. No single theory has been able to reconcile and account for the variety of findings. Here we show that a simple model based on standard learning rules can simulate and unify an unprecedented range of known effects in

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a chromosomal condition (47, XXY) that may help us to unravel gene-brain behavior pathways to psychopathology. The phenotype includes social cognitive impairments and increased risk for autism traits. We used functional MRI to study neural mechanisms underlying social information processing. Eighteen nonclinical controls and thirteen men with XXY were scanned during judgments of faces with regard to trustworthiness and age. While judging faces as untrustworthy in comparison to trustworthy, men with XXY displayed less activation than controls in (i) the amygdala, wh

Visual field deficit (VFD) is one of the most commonly observed symptoms following brain injury. Persistent VFD and defective exploratory oculomotor scanning patterns often cause severe impairment in daily activities, particularly as regards visual exploration and reading. Homonymous hemianopia is consequently a powerful negative predictor of patient outcome. In spite of these quantitative and qualitative factors, there currently exists no consensus on rehabilitative therapy and treatment. Different approaches have nevertheless been developed, all of them having one therapeutic principle in co

Although people do not normally try to remember associations between faces and physical contexts, these associations are established automatically, as indicated by the difficulty of recognizing familiar faces in different contexts ("butcher-on-the-bus" phenomenon). The present fMRI study investigated the automatic binding of faces and scenes. In the face-face (F-F) condition, faces were presented alone during both encoding and retrieval, whereas in the face/scene-face (FS-F) condition, they were presented overlaid on scenes during encoding but alone during retrieval (context change). Although

It has been proposed that language and action representational systems overlap when the tasks used to assess them involve the same stimuli and require abilities acquired at similarly early developmental stage. We matched variables at task and stimulus level to test this hypothesis in a group of 12 left-damaged patients (and 17 controls). At the patients' group level, we replicated previously reported correlations between linguistic and nonlinguistic tasks. When performances were analysed individually, however, double dissociations were observed between the ability to imitate pantomimes and the

Febrile seizures occurring during childhood have been shown to interfere with the development of cognitive functions. However, an alteration of the developing sensory systems might also result from febrile seizures. In order to test this hypothesis, seizures were induced by hyperthermia in Long Evans rats on postnatal day 10. Extracellular single neuron recordings were carried out from postnatal days 15 to 30 and at adulthood. The response of neurons in the primary visual cortex to drifting sinusoidal gratings was recorded in anaesthetized rats. As soon as postnatal day 15, the neurons of rats

Anxiety has profound influences on a wide range of cognitive processes, including action monitoring. Event-related brain potential (ERP) studies have shown that anxiety can boost early error detection mechanisms, as reflected by an enhanced error-related negativity (ERN) following errors in high-anxious, as compared with low-anxious, participants. This observation is consistent with the assumption of a gain control mechanism exerted by anxiety onto error-related brain responses within the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). However, whether anxiety simply enhances or, rather, alters early

PURPOSE: NiCl(2) (15 microM) enhances the ERG b-wave amplitude of vertebrate retina, up to 1.5-fold by blocking E/R-type voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels, which is mediated by blocking the release of GABA onto ionotropic GABA-A and GABA-C receptors. In vivo, it is likely that zinc, rather than nickel ions, may be involved in the modulation of retinal signalling. Therefore, we tested the effect of both, ZnCl(2) (10 to 500 microM) and DEDTC (100 to 500 microM), which chelates zinc ions for the capacity to influence the ERG b-wave amplitude.
METHODS: Transretinal potentials from the isolated bovine

The sensitivity of the left ventral occipito-temporal (vOT) cortex to visual word processing has triggered a considerable debate about the role of this region in reading. One popular view is that the left vOT underlies the perceptual expertise needed for rapid skilled reading. Because skilled reading breaks down when words are presented in a visually unfamiliar format, we tested this hypothesis by analyzing vOT responses to horizontally presented words (familiar format) and vertically presented words (unfamiliar format). In addition, we compared the activity in participants with left and right

OBJECTIVES: The present study in hypomanic and manic patients explored how amygdala responses to affective stimuli depend on the valence of the stimuli presented.
METHODS: We compared 10 patients with 10 matched healthy control subjects. We measured blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) responses in the amygdala while subjects passively viewed photographs taken from the International Affective Picture System. After the fMRI session, subjects saw the pictures again and subjectively rated the emotional valence and intensity of each picture.
RESULTS: Compared to healthy individuals, hypomanic or

Behavioral and electrophysiological studies of schizophrenia have consistently demonstrated impairments in the integration of visual features into unified perceptual representations. Specific brain regions involved in this dysfunction, however, remain to be clarified. This study used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to examine the relative involvement of visual cortex areas (involved in form perception) and parietal and frontal regions (involved in attention), in the visual integration impairment in schizophrenia. Fourteen patients with schizophrenia and 14 healthy controls were co

INTRODUCTION: Sustained and elaborative emotional information processing in depression and decreased affective elaboration in schizophrenia are considered hallmarks of these disorders but have not been directly measured. Gamma-band (35-45 Hz) EEG has been associated with semantic functions such as feature binding and may index these elaborative processing. This study examined whether there were group differences in baseline and sustained gamma-band EEG following emotional stimuli in healthy adults as well as adults with depression and schizophrenia.
METHODS: 24 never-depressed healthy control

A deficit in empathy has been repeatedly described in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and also, albeit less markedly, in their unaffected relatives. Here, we aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms of empathy in ASD, and to explore familial contributions to empathy correlates. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, 15 boys with ASD, 11 fathers of adolescents with ASD, and two control groups comparable for age and IQ (n=15 typically developing boys and their fathers (n=9)) were investigated during an empathy task. Emotional faces were presented and participants were eit

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder in which hypersociability is a characteristic feature. Given that the amygdala has been identified as an integral component of the neural system underlying sociability, researchers have suggested that the abnormal amygdala volumes found in individuals with WS may play a role in their hypersociability. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between amygdala volume and hypersociability, as measured by approachability ratings, in 22 individuals with WS and 22 normal controls matched on chronological age, sex, and hande

Event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown that sensitivity to individual faces emerges as early as approximately 160ms in the human occipitotemporal cortex (N170). Here we tested whether this effect generalizes across changes in viewpoint. We recorded ERPs during an unfamiliar individual face adaptation paradigm. Participants were presented first with an adapting face ( approximately 3000ms) rotated 30 degrees in depth, followed by a second face (200ms) in a frontal view of either the same or a different identity. The N170 amplitude at right occipitotemporal sites to the second stimulus

Previous electrophysiological as well as imaging research has contributed to the understanding of impairments in attention, executive functions, and memory in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, there is a lack of studies investigating ADHD related differences in the gamma range of human electroencephalogram (EEG), although gamma activity is strongly associated with cognitive processes impaired in ADHD patients and is also modulated by dopamine polymorphisms linked with ADHD. To close this gap, the present study compared gamma activity in ADHD children with

OBJECTIVE: A visuo-spatial orienting task was used to investigate the individual and joint contribution of the presence of dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to information processing.
METHODS: Sixteen control, 17 dyslexic, 16 ADHD, and 15 comorbid adults performed the task, comprising a valid, invalid, and no-cue condition. Performance measures were errors and reaction time (RT). A negative potential in response to cues and targets (N2), and a positive potential in response to targets (P3) were derived from the EEG. A 2x2 design was used with the factors dyslexic/no

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive motor neuron disease, affects movement and communication abilities and emotional processing. Subjective ratings of emotional stimuli depicting social interactions and facial expressions differed significantly between ALS patients and healthy controls in a previous study with a reduction of negative emotional valence (pleasantness) and lower subjective arousal (excitement) in ALS patients. In the present study, sixty similar emotional slides were presented to 13 ALS patients, 15 matched healthy controls and six tetraplegic patients. Subjective

When foreperiods (FPs) of different duration vary on a trial-by-trial basis equiprobably but randomly, the RT is faster as the FP increases (variable FP effect), and becomes slower as the FP on the preceding trial gets longer (sequential effects). It is unclear whether the two effects are due to a common mechanism or to two different ones. Patients with lesions on the right lateral prefrontal cortex do not show the typical FP effect, suggesting a deficit in monitoring the FP adequately [Stuss, D. T., Alexander, M. P., Shallice, T., Picton, T. W., Binns, M. A., Macdonald, R., et al. (2005). Mul

Visual hallucinations after post-geniculate visual system lesions were shown to be associated with spontaneous recovery of visual functions. We investigated the occurrence of hallucinations during spontaneous recovery and additionally tested whether hallucinations were re-instated in a phase of vision restoration therapy (VRT). Nineteen patients with post-geniculate lesions and homonymous visual loss participated in a prospective study, and 121 patients with various lesions were included in a retrospective study using a questionnaire including verbal descriptions as well as drawings of halluci
