Aging in Schizophrenia: Clinical, Biological, and Psychosocial Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder traditionally associated with early adulthood; however, an increasing number of individuals are now reaching older age, highlighting the need to better understand the aging process in this population. Emerging evidence suggests that schizophrenia may be associated with accelerated aging, characterized by an earlier onset of age-related conditions and increased vulnerability to physical and cognitive decline. Methods: We provide an integrative overview of aging in schizophrenia, focusing on biological mechanisms, clinical ma

Clinical Evidence of Kidney Protection Exerted by SGLT2 Inhibitors.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have become foundational therapies for nephroprotection, transforming the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) beyond the traditional risk factors. This chapter synthesizes evidence from randomized controlled trials and real-world studies demonstrating that SGLT2i consistently reduce albuminuria, slow estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline, and lower the risk of hard renal endpoints, including progression to end-stage kidney disease. Early cardiovascular outcome trials first signalled renal benefit as secondary outcomes, whi

Estimating the prevalence, factors, and conditions associated with Parkinson disease: a population-based study in Peru.

This study aimed to estimate the population-based Parkinson disease prevalence, and to explore potentially associated factors and conditions. A population-based survey was conducted in Northern Peru. Symptoms compatible with Parkinson's were defined using a validated Spanish questionnaire (≥ 42 points suggest Parkinson's). Potential factors (e.g., age, sex, etc.) and clinical conditions (e.g., depressive symptoms, perceived stress, etc.) associated with Parkinson's were assessed. In total, 1,609 subjects were included, mean age of participants was 48.2 (SD: 10.6), and 810 (50.3%) were women. P

Modelling an Optimal Climate-Driven Malaria Transmission Control Strategy to Optimise the Management of Malaria in Mberengwa District, Zimbabwe: A Multi-Method Study Protocol.

Malaria is a persistent public health problem, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where its transmission is intricately linked to climatic factors. Climate change threatens malaria elimination efforts in limited resource settings, such as in the Mberengwa district. However, the role of climate change in malaria transmission and management has not been adequately quantified to inform interventions. This protocol employs a multi-method quantitative study design in four steps, starting with a scoping review of the literature, followed by a multi-method quantitative approach using geospatial analy

How to set up a pregnancy heart team.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in developed countries, complicating 4-11 % of pregnancies. Women with CVD are at increased risk of maternal complications, including heart failure and arrhythmias, as well as adverse fetal outcomes such as preterm birth and perinatal mortality. Traditionally, care for pregnant women with CVD has been fragmented across specialties, leading to discontinuity and missed opportunities for optimization. To address this, recent European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines strongly recommend the implementation of

Lactose Intolerance in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Lactose is a disaccharide mainly found in dairy and dairy-containing products which yields D-galactose and D-glucose on hydrolysis. Lactose intolerance (LI) is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, nausea and/or diarrhoea following ingestion of dairy or lactose-containing meals. LI affects about 75% of the world's population though the condition is poorly recognized despite being of great public health significance in sub-saharan Africa (ssA). The aim of the review is to highlight the epidemiology, types, pathophysiology, genetics, diagnosis, management and prevention of LI. L

Does Biological Sex Determine the Natural History and Management of Infective Endocarditis?

Sex and gender are important determinants of health. Despite growing recognition of their relevance, women remain under-represented in clinical trials and cardiovascular research. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex cardiovascular condition in which emerging evidence reveals sex-based disparities that extend beyond demographic differences. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence from large population-based studies, national registries, meta-analyses, and cohort studies to elucidate the epidemiologic landscape of sex differences in IE, including variations in clinical pre

Pathophysiology and management of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy: a review.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is considered the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting approximately 30% of the global population. While gastrointestinal bleeding and menstruation in women are the primary causes of IDA, insufficient dietary iron intake and reduced iron absorption contribute to the condition. The aim of IDA treatment is to restore iron stores and normalise haemoglobin levels in affected patients. Iron plays a critical role in various cellular mechanisms, including oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymati

Presence of Foodborne Bacteria in Wild Boar and Wild Boar Meat-A Literature Survey for the Period 2012-2022.

The wild boar is an abundant game species with high reproduction rates. The management of the wild boar population by hunting contributes to the meat supply and can help to avoid a spillover of transmissible animal diseases to domestic pigs, thus compromising food security. By the same token, wild boar can carry foodborne zoonotic pathogens, impacting food safety. We reviewed literature from 2012-2022 on biological hazards, which are considered in European Union legislation and in international standards on animal health. We identified 15 viral, 10 bacterial, and 5 parasitic agents and selecte

Practical approach to referral from primary health care to a cardiology hospital consultation in 2022.

In Portugal, up to 38% of the population has cardiovascular disease, which highlights the importance of primary health care (PHC) in its management. Adequate management of people with cardiovascular disease often requires hospital referral for a cardiology consultation. However, it is not always easy to ascertain which situations should be referred, especially given that PHC does not have access to all diagnostic exams recommended by international guidelines, such as natriuretic peptides in heart failure or computed tomography coronary angiogram in chronic coronary syndromes, among others.
