Mental health literacy among family nurses in Poland: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: More than a billion people worldwide suffer from mental health disorders, and primary health care (PHC) is critical for early recognition and treatment of these medical conditions. Family nurses (FNs), as the patient's first point of contact with the healthcare system, are considered to play an important role in identifying mental health disorders. Mental health literacy (MHL) refers to the knowledge and beliefs that help with the recognition, treatment and prevention of mental disorders; yet, little is known about the level of MHL among family nurses in Poland. The aim of this stu

Risk Compensation in the Context of Sexually Transmitted Infections in Women Using the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring in Africa: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a critical public health challenge globally, with Africa facing the highest incidence and mortality rates. The Dapivirine Vaginal Ring (DVR) is a discreet HIV prevention tool for women but does not protect against other non-HIV STIs. Like any other HIV biomedical prevention tool, DVR might lead to increased STI prevalence. Thus, this scoping review assessed the prevalence of STIs and the sociocultural, economic, and demographic factors influencing STI risk among African women using DVR in Africa. The review also examined current policie

Patients with complex chronic conditions: Health care use and clinical events associated with access to a patient portal.

BACKGROUND: For patients with diabetes, many with multiple complex chronic conditions, using a patient portal can support self-management and coordination of health care services, and may impact the frequency of in-person health care visits. OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of portal access on the number of outpatient visits, emergency visits, and preventable hospitalizations. DESIGN: Observational study comparing patients' visit rates with and without portal access, using marginal structural modeling with inverse probability weighting estimates to account for potential bias due to confoundi

Mental health of adolescents associated with sexual and reproductive outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature on the mental health of adolescents associated with sexual and reproductive outcomes, and compare the mental health outcomes with that of other age groups. METHODS: We searched seven databases for relevant peer-reviewed articles published between 1 January 2010 and 25 April 2019. Our inclusion criteria required that the study included age-disaggregated data on adolescents, and focused and assessed mental health outcomes associated with pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. We extracted data on the specific health event, the mental hea

Primary care health issues among men who have sex with men.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to examine "appropriate" health care for men who have sex with men (MSM), which is not to suggest "special" health care. As a group, MSM are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections, anal cancer, and mental health disorders. Focus areas in this article will address health issues that the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) may encounter in clinical practice: anal carcinoma, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), high-risk sexual practices, depression, and substance abuse were topics chosen for inclusion in this article. These topics were amon

The Detection of Novel Nitazene-Class Opioids in Unregulated Drug Markets in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Nitazenes, a highly potent class of synthetic opioids, have emerged in Canadian unregulated drug markets. We report on their presence and composition, along with overdose trends. METHODS: Samples were obtained from January 2019 to July 2024 from two drug checking services (Toronto's Drug Checking Service (TDCS) and drug checking partners affiliated with the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU)) and national police seizure data from Health Canada's Drug Analysis Service (HC-DAS). Overdose data were retrieved from the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario from Januar

Sex inequality, high transport costs, and exposed clinic location: reasons for loss to follow-up of clients under prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in eastern Uganda - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Iganga, Uganda, 45% of women who tested HIV-positive during antenatal care between 2007 and 2010 were lost to follow-up (LTFU). We explored reasons for LTFU during prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) from a client perspective in eastern Uganda, where antiretroviral therapy (ART) awareness is presumably high. METHODS: Seven key informant interviews and 20 in-depth interviews, including both clients who had been retained under PMTCT care and those LTFU during PMTCT were held. Ten focus-group discussions involving a total of 112 participants were also conducted with

A randomized trial to evaluate a complex, co-created, culture-sensitive intervention to promote healthy lifestyles and compliance to therapy in immigrants with type 2 diabetes: A protocol of a multicenter Italian study.

INTRODUCTION: The active involvement of end users may overcome socio-economic, cultural and context-related barriers that may reduce health promotion effectiveness in type 2 diabetes control and prevention. The "Cardio-metabolic diseases in immigrants and ethnic minorities: from epidemiology to new prevention strategies" (DIABETHIC) project funded by the European Union through the Italian Ministry of Health includes a multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to assess the effectiveness of a co-created health promotion intervention for immigrants affected by type 2 diabetes. Who could be One Health Activist at the community level?: A case for India.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) are the mainstay of the public health system, serving for decades in low-resource countries. Their multi-dimensional work in various health care services, including the prevention of communicable diseases and health promotion of non-communicable diseases, makes CHWs, the frontline workers in their respective communities in India. As India is heading towards the development of One Health (OH), this study attempted to provide an insight into potential OH activists (OHA) at the community level. Thus, this case study in one of India's western cities, Ahm

"My Wife's Healthcare Is my Healthcare": A Qualitative Study Exploring Family-Centered Strategies to Enhance Cervical Cancer Prevention in Northern Ghana.

IntroductionWhile largely preventable, cervical cancer remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where gaps in screening uptake persist despite expanding prevention efforts. In many patriarchal settings, men play influential roles in household decision-making and access to healthcare, positioning them as critical but under-engaged stakeholders. There remains limited understanding of how educational strategies to improve health literacy can be designed to effectively engage men in supporting women's screening participation.MethodsWe conducted

Cascading Risks for Preventable Infectious Diseases in Children and Adolescents during the 2022 Invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's military incursion into Ukraine triggered the mass displacement of two-thirds of Ukrainian children and adolescents, creating a cascade of population health consequences and producing extraordinary challenges for monitoring and controlling preventable pediatric infectious diseases. From the onset of the war, infectious disease surveillance and healthcare systems were severely disrupted. Prior to the reestablishment of dependable infectious disease surveillance systems, and during the early months of the conflict, our international team of pediatricians, infectious disease specialists,

Peer delivered, emotion regulation-focused mental health prevention training for fire fighter trainees: Design and methodology of a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Fire fighters (FFs) risk their lives, health, and well-being through trauma exposure and other occupational stressors. FFs report concerning rates of mental health challenges, alcohol use disorders, and suicide risk. These problems tend to co-occur, as each is linked with reliance on maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. As FFs advance in their careers, many tend to rely more heavily on these maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, thus exacerbating the problems. Many FFs leave fire service prematurely due to mental and physical health problems. FFs must be equipped with mo

Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its control measures on women and children: A Zimbabwe case study.

COVID-19 presented countries with unprecedented health policy challenges. For low-income countries in particular, policymakers had to contend with both the direct threats posed by COVID-19 as well as the social, educational, and economic harms associated with lockdown and other infection prevention and control measures. We present a holistic and contextualised case study of the direct and indirect impacts of COVID-19 on women and children, with some assessment of their uneven distribution across socio-economic, age and gender groups. We used different types of primary and secondary data from m

An Interactive Modeling Tool for Projecting the Health and Direct Medical Cost Impact of Changes in the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention Program Budgets.

CONTEXT: Estimating the return on investment for public health services, tailored to the state level, is critical for demonstrating their value and making resource allocation decisions. However, many health departments have limited staff capacity and expertise to conduct economic analyses in-house. PROGRAM: We developed a user-friendly, interactive Excel-based spreadsheet model that health departments can use to estimate the impact of increases or decreases in sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention funding on the incidence and direct medical costs of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, a

Provider-Reported Barriers in Sexual Health Care Services for Women With Upstream Barriers: The Case of Syphilis and Congenital Syphilis in Southern Colorado, 2022.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis and congenital syphilis rates have increased sharply in Colorado in the past 5 years. Congenital syphilis is passed during pregnancy in utero and can cause lifelong physical, developmental, and neurologic problems for the child, or can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Congenital syphilis is easily prevented if the mother receives timely testing, treatment, and prenatal care. Providers can play a key role in preventing congenital syphilis for women with social vulnerabilities, who have a higher likelihood of syphilis and/or congenital syphilis infecti

Malaria in populations with mining occupation, Colombia, 2012-2018.

Introduction: Malaria represents one of the biggest public health challenges, mainly in poor countries. Colombia has social characteristics such as migration, informal work, and economic shortages that favor illegal mining activities. The study of the malaria situation in these areas would allow establishing the bases for its prevention, control, and treatment in the existing public health programs. Objective: To describe the malaria situation in Colombian mining populations between 2012 and 2018. Materials and methods. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study with graphs and maps. For t

When separation is not the answer: Breastfeeding mothers and infants affected by COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided detailed guidance on the care of infants of women who are persons under investigation (PUI) or confirmed to have COVID-19. The guidance supports immediate post-partum mother-infant contact and breastfeeding with appropriate respiratory precautions. Although many countries have followed WHO guidance, others have implemented infection prevention and control (IPC) policies that impose varying levels of post-partum separation and discourage or prohibit breastfeeding or provision of expressed breast milk. These policies aim to protect infants from th

Contextualizing Canada's hepatitis C virus epidemic.

In 2016, Canada signed on to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2030 hepatitis C virus (HCV) disease elimination targets. Most of Canada's HCV disease burden is among five disproportionately affected population groups: 1) Baby boomers, who are at increased risk of dying from decompensated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and for whom one-time screening should be recommended to identify those undiagnosed; 2) People who inject drugs (PWID), whose mortality risks include HCV infection, HCV acquisition risks and co-morbid conditions. While HCV infection in PWID can be effectively cured with

Venous thromboembolism incidence in upper limb orthopedic surgery: do these procedures increase venous thromboembolism risk?

BACKGROUND: In 2005, the House of Commons (HoC) Health Committee stated deaths attributed to preventable, hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (VTE) numbered upwards of 25,000 per annum. Nationwide prevention of VTE became the topic of a major health campaign. The HoC Health Committee stated there was an unstratified VTE risk of between 45% and 51% associated with orthopedic surgery. VTE research in orthopedic surgery has been concentrated on lower limb procedures. Experience suggests that this kind of relation does not hold true for upper limb orthopedic procedures. This project aimed to
