Case reports of acupuncturists and massage therapists at Mayo Clinic: New allies in expediting patient diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Massage therapists (MTs) and licensed acupuncturists (LAcs) are increasingly embedded within interdisciplinary care teams in both inpatient and outpatient settings. While not traditionally viewed as diagnostic providers, their extended, hands-on interactions with patients enable them to observe subtle physical and behavioral changes that may support early clinical recognition of underlying health issues. OBJECTIVE: To present a case series in which MTs and LAcs identified abnormal clinical findings during routine care, prompting timely referrals that led to new or expedited diagno

Postdural puncture headache in obstetrics.

PURPOSE: In this Continuing Professional Development module, we review the literature on postdural puncture headache (PDPH) in obstetrics. The pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and outcomes are discussed. We explore the evidence for prevention and treatment options of PDPH in obstetric patients and the importance of the anesthesiologist's role in caring for these patients. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A PDPH is any headache that develops after a dural puncture and is not better accounted for by another diagnosis. Risk factors for PDPH include young age and female sex, which, along with the hig

Airway Mucus Plugs in Community-Living Adults: A Study Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mucus pathology plays a critical role in airway diseases like chronic bronchitis (CB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Up to 32% of community-living persons report clinical manifestations of mucus pathology (e.g., cough and sputum production). However, airway mucus pathology has not been systematically studied in community-living individuals. In this study, we will use an objective, reproducible assessment of mucus pathology on chest computed tomography (CT) scans from community-living individuals participating in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adu

Advancing stroke recovery: unlocking the potential of cellular dynamics in stroke recovery.

Stroke stands as a predominant cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and there is a pressing need for effective therapies to improve outcomes and enhance the quality of life for stroke survivors. In this line, effective efferocytosis, the clearance of apoptotic cells, plays a crucial role in neuroprotection and immunoregulation. This process involves specialized phagocytes known as "professional phagocytes" and consists of four steps: "Find-Me," "Eat-Me," engulfment/digestion, and anti-inflammatory responses. Impaired efferocytosis can lead to secondary necrosis and inflammation, resulti

Satisfaction Amongst Drug-dependent Population with Methadone Maintenance Treatment Services, A Comparison between Public and Private Clinics: Implications for Private Sector Engagement in the Delivery of Methadone Maintenance Programs Across Vietnam.

In Vietnam, the public sector has largely been responsible for delivering methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) services. However, with foreign aid anticipated to decline in the coming years, the involvement of the private sector in delivering MMT services is critical to ensure the continued sustainability of MMT programs across Vietnam. This study aims to evaluate patient satisfaction and identify correlated factors among Vietnamese drug users undergoing MMT in both public and private methadone clinics. A cross-sectional study was conducted in one private and two public methadone facilities i

Characteristics of physical violence against pregnant women - analysis of medico-legal data and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy is a period which is especially sensitive to physical violence and its aftermath. Subjecting a pregnant woman to violence can have negative effects on both the mother as well as the child. In Poland, there are programs, such as the Blue Card, aimed at protection against violence, however the phenomenon is underestimated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Documentation covering forensic examinations carried out at the request of the police or privately at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Poznan in the years 2015-2020 was analyzed. Out of 7,689 cases, 22 were concluded to meet t

Thrombosis and Thrombotic Risk in Athletes.

The hemostatic system is characterized by a delicate balance between pro- and anticoagulant forces, and the smallest alteration can cause serious events such as hemorrhages or thrombosis. Although exercise has been shown to play a protective role in athletes, several factors may increase the risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE), including hemoconcentration induced by exertion, immobilization following sports injuries, frequent long-distance flights, dehydration, and the use of oral contraceptives in female athletes. Biomarkers such as D-dimer, Factor VIII, thrombin generation, infla

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a telehealth group intervention to reduce perinatal depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression and anxiety (PDA) affect approximately 20 % of individuals and are associated with adverse outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and impaired cognitive development of the child. Telehealth may reduce access barriers to needed mental health services. However, lack of disseminated, standardized study protocols aimed at investigating the role of telehealth in reducing PDA symptoms limits the ability to compare findings across studies. The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework and a randomized controlled trial protocol (RCT) for

Barriers to identifying, diagnosing, and treating vulval lichen sclerosus in primary care: a mixed methods survey study.

BACKGROUND: Vulval lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a skin condition which causes pain, itching, anatomical changes, and increases vulval cancer risk by up to 22 times. VLS is treatable, with use of topical steroids allowing symptom resolution and complication prevention. Diagnostic delay and misdiagnosis of VLS is common. Previous studies found that women attribute this to poor interactions with and knowledge of clinicians. Most VLS is diagnosed in primary care. AIM: To investigate primary care clinicians' views on confidence in identifying and managing vulval skin disease and VLS, barriers to diag

Arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation for fracture of the posterior process of the talus (Shepherd's fracture): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fracture of the lateral tubercle of the posterior process of the talus (Shepherd fracture) is an uncommon injury seen in sport. It is secondary either to indirect trauma on the plantarflexed foot or to high-impact direct trauma. The fracture can be missed with conventional X-rays and therefore advanced imaging methods such as CT scans are usually warranted for management planning. There is a low threshold towards surgical management in the displaced or comminuted case as the delayed functional outcome with conservative treatment is frequently sub-optimal with long-term pain, dege
