Cross-Cultural and Gender Invariance of Transdiagnostic Processes in the United States and Singapore.

The Research Domain Criteria define cognitive and emotional processes (e.g., rumination, intolerance of uncertainty, anxiety sensitivity, emotion dysregulation) as key transdiagnostic elements of psychopathology. However, there is currently a dearth of construct equivalence studies on measures of these processes. We thus aimed to validate the latent structures of five transdiagnostic constructs using established and newer measures: two-factor Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire, six-factor Perseverative Cognitions Questionnaire, two-factor Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, three-factor Anxiety

Detecting noncredible performance with the neuropsychological assessment battery, screening module: A simulation study.

OBJECTIVE: While the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery, Screening Module (S-NAB) is a commonly used cognitive screening measure, no composite embedded performance validity test (PVT) formula has yet been described within it. This study sought to empirically derive PVT formulas within the S-NAB using an analog simulation paradigm. METHOD: Seventy-two university students (M age = 18.92) were randomly assigned to either an Asymptomatic (AS) or simulated mild traumatic brain injury (S-mTBI) group and were administered a neuropsychological test battery that included the S-NAB and standalone an

Latent Factor Structure and Construct Validity of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Short Form Among Two PTSD Samples.

The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-Short form (CERQ-Short; Garnefski & Kraaij, 2006) was developed to assess nine theoretically derived factors of emotion regulation. However, the psychometric properties of this measure have never been studied in a clinical sample. The present study examined the latent factor structure and construct validity of the CERQ-Short in two samples presenting for posttraumatic stress disorder treatment (N = 480). Results indicated that a six-factor solution, rather than the proposed nine factors, was the best-fitting measurement model. The original CERQ-Sh

Review and evaluation of patient-centered psychosocial assessments for children with central precocious puberty or early puberty.

The objective of this study was to assess the current use of patient-centered psychosocial assessments for the evaluation of children with central precocious puberty (CPP). Studies evaluating the psychosocial impact of CPP were identified through searches of the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases, ClinicalTrials.gov, a drug prescribing information database, and regulatory websites. Studies were screened using prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Potentially relevant patient-centered outcome assessments (including patient-, parent- or observer-reported measures) used in the identif

Validation of the Croatian version of the Oswestry Disability Index.

PURPOSE: To translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the Croatian version of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). METHODS: The original English-language ODI was cross-culturally adapted into Croatian and then evaluated in a group of 114 patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) at the Department of Neurosurgery, Zagreb University School of Medicine. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted with three models: two were theory driven (unidimensional and two dimensional-static and dynamic factors); the other was based on our exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Internal consistency a

Overview and current management of computerized adaptive testing in licensing/certification examinations.

Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) has been implemented in high-stakes examinations such as the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurses in the United States since 1994. Subsequently, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in the United States adopted CAT for certifying emergency medical technicians in 2007. This was done with the goal of introducing the implementation of CAT for medical health licensing examinations. Most implementations of CAT are based on item response theory, which hypothesizes that both the examinee and items have their own characteristics

An Independent Investigation of the Utility of the Learning Disability Screening Questionnaire (LDSQ) within a Community Learning Disability Team.

BACKGROUND: The Learning Disability Screening Questionnaire (LDSQ) has been shown to have high sensitivity and specificity to identify those who are likely to meet intellectual disability diagnostic criteria (McKenzie, et al. ). However, there is no independent research to date to support these findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An archival research design was used, utilizing data from diagnostic tools including the LDSQ, Wechsler Adult Intelligence assessments and Adaptive Behavior Assessment System Second Edition (ABAS-II) scores. RESULTS: Sensitivity and specificity values derived here were

[Attention and reading performance in children with ADHD, reading disorder and the combined condition].

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia co-occur more often than expected by chance. Both disorders can have severe negative impact on children’s development. The aim of the present study was to compare attention and reading performance in children with ADHD, dyslexia and the comorbid condition. Ninety-nine German children in 3rd and 4th grade with ADHD (n = 26), dyslexia (n = 22) and the comorbid condition (n = 24) compared to a healthy control group (n = 27) were assessed with a model oriented assessment battery for reading and attention. Additionally, comorbid problems

The contrast sensitivity function of the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola.

The detection of visual motion and its direction is a fundamental task faced by several visual systems. The motion detection system of insects has been widely studied with the majority of studies focussing on flies and bees. Here we characterize the contrast sensitivity of motion detection in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola, an ambush predator that stays stationary for long periods of time while preying on fast-moving prey. In this, its visual behaviour differs from previously studied insects and we might therefore expect its motion detection system to differ from theirs. To investiga

Anxiety symptoms and functional impairment: A systematic review of the correlation between the two measures.

Researchers and clinicians assume a strong, positive correlation between anxiety symptoms and functional impairment. That assumption may be well-justified since diagnostic criteria typically include functional impairment. Still, the relationship remains largely unavailable in any systematic review. Our aim with this paper was to provide empirical evidence for this assumed relationship and to document the observed correlations between anxiety symptom measures and functional impairment measures. Correlations existed for symptoms of six anxiety disorders (Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Social Anxie

[Questionnaire methods used in the psychosomatic evaluation of tinnitus].

Tinnitus is a common disorder in ear, nose and throat practice. Not only muscular, vascular, neuronal, odiologic and ear pathologies, also psychological parameters contribute to the formation of tinnitus. Scales which evaluate patients' perception of tinnitus and how they are affected from tinnitus psychosomatically have gained increasing importance. Questionnaire studies are very assisting in terms of showing the degree of anxiety and depression experienced by the patients, diagnosis of the disease, evaluation of treatment efficacy, and patient follow-up. In this study, we reviewed the visual

Constraint and loneliness in agoraphobia: an empirical investigation.

While progress in the aetiopathology and treatment of panic disorder is indisputable, research regarding agoraphobia lacks behind. One significant-yet untested- theory by Guidano and Liotti, suggests the existence of inner representations of fear of "constraint" and fear of "loneliness" as two major schemata, important in the pathogenesis and manifestation of agoraphobia. Activation of these schemata may occur in situations in which the patient: (a) feels as in an inescapable trap (constraint) or (b) alone, unprotected and helpless (loneliness). Upon activation, the "constraint" schema elicits

[The clinic of apathy in schizophrenia: a critical review of the issue].

INTRODUCTION: Today the concept of apathy is subject to many questions. This psychological state is present and predominant in different disorders such as neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases or neurological acquired disorders. Apathy is a part of the clinical vocabulary, however, we can note that in the literature there remains confusion in its definition, and we can find an amalgam with other clinical symptoms. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to provide a clarification of the concept of apathy in clinical practice in schizophrenia as well as to highlight the gaps that exist. LI

Assessing decoding ability: the role of speed and accuracy and a new composite indicator to measure decoding skill in elementary grades.

Tools for assessing decoding skill in students attending elementary grades are of fundamental importance for guaranteeing an early identification of reading disabled students and reducing both the primary negative effects (on learning) and the secondary negative effects (on the development of the personality) of this disability. This article presents results obtained by administering existing standardized tests of reading and a new screening procedure to about 1,500 students in the elementary grades in Italy. It is found that variables measuring speed and accuracy in all administered reading t

Development of an instrument to measure attitudes of physical therapy providers working with people with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigated the factor structure of an instrument to measure attitudes and beliefs of how physical therapist (PT) practitioners perceive working with people with a dementia disorder. METHODS: A survey was mailed to every skilled nursing facility in Indiana (n = 495) for completion by a PT or physical therapist assistant. The survey was developed and included whether the severity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) impacts the attitudes of physical therapy practitioners. RESULTS: Of the 12 attitudinal questions, 11 were significant (P < .001) concerning how the sev

Evaluations of situational judgement tests to assess non-academic attributes in selection.

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents a systematic review of the emerging international research evidence for the use of situational judgement tests (SJTs) for testing important non-academic attributes (such as empathy, integrity and resilience) in selection processes. METHODS: Several databases (e.g. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science) were searched to retrieve empirical studies relating to SJTs published between 1990 and 2010. Personal contact with experts in the field was made to identify any unpublished research or work in progress to obtain the most current material. Finally, reference lists we

Comments from the trenches: Proposed Changes to the DSM-V classification of pathological gambling.

The proposed DSM-V changes related to the pathological gambling diagnosis hold far-reaching implications, yet these modifications have been met with little public attention. This letter addresses the three changes proposed including the diagnosis' reclassification alongside other addictive behaviors, the lowering of the pathological gambling threshold to the endorsement of 4 symptoms, and the removal of the "illegal acts" criterion. Support for the initial change is well documented, but there is evidence to suggest that the latter two changes should be reconsidered.

Testing the validity of implicit measures of wanting and liking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, there has been a surge of studies examining implicit processes underlying addiction. Some implicit measures are assumed to reflect "liking" whereas other implicit measures are assumed to reflect "wanting". There is, however, little evidence to back up this claim. We examined whether implicit and explicit measures of wanting and of liking are differentially sensitive to manipulations of wanting and expected that these manipulations would affect primarily measures of wanting. METHODS: Smokers and non-smokers performed both implicit and explicit m
