To determine the influence of wide variations in dietary levels of calcium, zinc and phytic acid (as sodium phytate) on growth and cataract incidence, juvenile chinook salmon held at 10-11 degrees C were fed daily to satiation for 105 d one of nine purified diets containing one of three levels (grams/kilogram) of calcium (averaged 4.8, 17.7, 50.2), zinc (averaged 0.05, 0.15, 0.39) and phytic acid (1.62, 6.46, 25.8). A randomized trial of 41 patients undergoing truncal vagotomy with pyloroplasty (TV + P) or truncal vagotomy with graded pyloric dilatation (TV + PD) for chronic duodenal ulcer is reported after mean follow-up of 34 months. Seventy-one patients with duodenal ulcer disease completed a 3- to 6-week controlled randomized trial in which cimetidine (1 g daily) was compared with an optimally effective dose of propantheline. Both groups had free access to an antacid suspension. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning ulcer healing, relief of ulcer symptoms, antacid consumption, or patient compliance. In a retrospective study the clinical and secretory results of 118 patients operated upon with selective proximal vagotomy (SPV) with or without pyloroplasty for duodenal ulcer were examined. The results of surgery in the two groups, with pyloroplasty or without pyloroplasty, were compared. Spontaneous internal biliary fistulas are complications of biliary disease and may themselves be the source of further complications. Instances of the latter observed in a series of 28 bilio-digestive and 18 bilio-biliary forms are described: angiocolitis, biliary peritonitis, cholangitic cirrhosis, diarrhoea and malabsorption syndrome, haemorrhage, biliary ileus and Bouveret syndrome. Stress is laid on the need for early diagnosis and early surgery. It is pointed out that there is no such thing as an innocuous biliary calculus.

The results of selective proximal vagotomy and pyloroplasty for duodenal and gastric ulcer in 464 patients over the last 5 years were evaluated in 438 cases. More than 75% of the patients were observed for 2 years after the operation. Thirty-two patients with diarrhoea, on average four years following truncal vagotomy and drainage, were studied. A comparison was made with 24 patients without postvagotomy diarrhoea.
