A comparative prospective study of the Doppler ultrasonogram, the testicular scan and the surgical findings in patients with an acute scrotum is presented. The testicular scan was found to be the most reliable diagnostic method since it correlated with the surgical findings in 100 per cent of the cases. The Doppler ultrasonogram proved to be useful since it gave a positive correlation in 79 per cent of the cases studied.

The unique association of both exercise-induced coronary arterial spasm and S-T segment depression with normal findings on selective coronary arteriography is described. The adrenal gland uptake of 131I-6-beta-iodomethyl-19-norcholesterol (NP-59) was calculated using a semioperator-independent computer algorithm in 17 patients with Cushing's syndrome (CS). Twelve had ACTH-dependent and 5 had ACTH-independent CS. The mean adrenal gland uptake (percentage of administered dose) of NP-59 was 0.74 +/- 0.18% (range, 0.21-2.02%) in CS and was significantly higher than that of normal subjects (0.33 +/- 0.02%). A retrospective review of 341 patients with bladder cancer revealed 58 candidates for cystectomy. These patients were evaluated preoperatively by radionuclide bone and/or liver scans in an attempt to increase the accuracy of clinical staging. The binding of technetium-99m sulfur colloid to in vivo thrombi was studied in a rat model of deep vein thrombosis. After thrombosis was induced by mechanical traumatization of a right femoral vein segment, technetium-99m sulfur colloid was injected into the peripheral veins of different experimental groups at intervals of 30 min and 1-7 days. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of two-dimensional echocardiography with that of other methods in the detection and localization of aneurysm involving the ascending aorta in patients with annuloaortic ectasia. Three children with goitrous hypothyroidism had thyroid scans with [Tc-99m] sodium pertechnetate, which showed symmetrically enlarged thyroid glands with uniformly increased activities compared to little activities in the salivary glands and low body background activities. These scan findings, simulating those of Graves' disease, reflect acid trapping of this tracer, analogous to that seen with I-131. Perchlorate discharge test was positive in two patients, indicating an organification defect.

The authors present 143 cases of breast carcinoma T1 and T2, N0, N1, N2 and N3 without clinical signs of bone metastasis. They study the value of bone scintigraphy with technetium 99m labelled diphosphonates. Iodohippurate renography and rapid serial scintigrams with pertechnetate were done in 27 allograft recipients in supine and standing positions. Posture-dependent iodohippurate transport and/or disturbance of pertechnetate flow pattern was found in nine of those examined. Patients demonstrating these abnormalities were found to be hypertensive. We suggest a causal relationship between posttransplant hypertension and the described posture-induced alterations of tracer transit.

99MTc is an ideal nuclide for Pediatric use. Combined with DTPA is an adequate agent for renal studies. 15 patients with ages ranging from eight days to eleven years were studied (10 patients with congenital malformation and five with renal tumour). The dosimetric advantages, the obtention with a single nuclide dose of multiple images and the diagnostic usefulness in congenital malformation and renal tumour suggest their use.

Quantitative whole-body bone scans were performed on 277 patients with bone metastases, diseases of the joint and systemic bone diseases in order to evaluate the clinical significance of quantitative and kinetic data in bone imaging.
