The aim of this study was to define the structural characteristics in a series of 21 analogues of the anti-histaminergic drug diphenhydramine which are important for the interaction with cytochrome P-450. In this in vitro radiorespirometric study, the effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on glucose and fructose metabolism in the rat and mouse testes were compared. In the rat testis, THC caused a dose-dependent decrease of 15, 18, 20 and 25% in glucose metabolism with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mM concentrations. Similarly, a 39% inhibition in fructose metabolism was observed when rat testes were exposed to 0.3 mM THC. Many biologically active polypeptides have been detected either in the submandibular salivary glands (SSG) of the rat, and in the saliva of rats and humans. The present work has investigated the case of somatostatin (SRIF), since salivary data concerning the presence of this peptide are scarce and contradictory. We have performed whole-cell patch-clamp studies on dispersed secretory cells of the rat mandibular gland to determine how beta-adrenergic stimulation causes fluid secretion.
