Two series of experiments were performed prior to cataract surgery. In series 1, in 30 patients oculopression was performed for 15 min (30, 40 or 50 mmHg). Directly after oculopression the intraocular pressure (Pio) was found to be reduced by an average of 10.7 mmHg. Three infant boys with a bilateral congenital retinopathy characterized by retinal vascular hypoplasia and persistence of the primary vitreous are described. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome is a common genetic syndrome of cleft palate, learning disability, heart disease, and abnormal facial appearance. Ocular findings include retinal vascular tortuosity, posterior embryotoxon, narrow palpebral fissures, suborbital discoloration, small optic nerves, iris nodules, and cataracts. Retinal vascular tortuosity was found to be associated intrinsically with the syndrome and not secondary to the heart disease. The ocular and systemic findings suggest a primary developmental anomaly of neural crest derivatives in the pathogenesis of the syndrome.

Ocular blood flow was measured in aphakic rabbit eyes using a radioactive microsphere technique following sub-chronic three times a day treatment with one of the following drugs: ecothiophate iodide (0.125%), pilocarpine (4%), epinephrine (2%), norepinephrine (2%) or timolol (0.5%). A deletion of the short arm of chromosome No. 5 has been termed the cri du chat (cat cry) syndrome. We report the first ophthalmologic examination of a newborn infant with this syndrome. In a series of 50 individuals with optic disc drusen diagnosed before the age of 15, the anomaly occurred most often in the form of an elevation of the whole or one part of the optic disc without visible superficial drusen.
