Intraperitoneal injection of acrylonitrile at 1.51-2.26 mmole/kg (80-120 mg/kg) or propionitrile at 0.54-1.51 mmole/kg (30-83 mg/kg) on the morning of Day 8 of gestation in the hamster induced exencephaly, encephalocoeles, and rib fusions and bifurcations in the offspring. These doses of the aliphatic nitriles also resulted in obvious toxicity to the dams. The traumatic mediastinal emphysema occurs along with severe combined injuries. A typical feature is the subcutaneous emphysema as well as crackling sounds and frequently a pneumothorax. The radiography of the chest shows air in the mediastinum surrounding the mediastinal structures. The pleura drainage could be done as an emergency performance in cases of pneumothorax. The three major types of aortic aneurysms--arteriosclerotic, syphilitic, and dissecting are disussed in relation to the skeletal changes they produce. The favored location, age, and sex predilection are described for each type. Four documented cases from the Hamann-Todd osteological collection are presented with a description of the associated skeletal changes. All four cases appear to be the result of syphilitic infection. These documented cases provide forensic and physical anthropologists with a means of diagnosing aortic aneurysms in modern, historic, and prehistoric human skeletal remains

A new transmission ultrasound camera system has provided focused images in real time through the abdomen of adult volunteers at average incident sound intensity levels of less than 1 mW/cm-2. The camera uses a unique acousto-mechanical lens/deflection system and a linear array of piezoelectric transducers to detect the ultrasound image.
