A Precise Pulmonary Airway Tree Segmentation Method Using Quasi-Spherical Region Constraint and Tracheal Wall Gap Sealing.

Accurate segmentation of the pulmonary airway tree is crucial for diagnosing lung diseases. To tackle the issues of low segmentation accuracy and frequent leaks in existing methods, this paper proposes a precise segmentation method using quasi-spherical region-constrained wavefront propagation with tracheal wall gap sealing. Based on the characteristic that the surface formed by seed points approximates the airway cross-section, the width of the unsegmented airway is calculated, determining the initial quasi-spherical constraint region. Using the wavefront propagation method, seed points are c

Modulation of Alzheimer's Disease Aβ40 Fibril Polymorphism by the Small Heat Shock Protein αB-Crystallin.

Deposition of amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients is a hallmark of the disease. AD plaques consist primarily of the beta-amyloid (Aβ) peptide but can contain other factors such as lipids, proteoglycans, and chaperones. So far, it is unclear how the cellular environment modulates fibril polymorphism and how differences in fibril structure affect cell viability. The small heat-shock protein (sHSP) alpha-B-Crystallin (αBC) is abundant in brains of AD patients, and colocalizes with Aβ amyloid plaques. Using solid-state NMR spectroscopy, we show that the Aβ40 fibril s

Investigating functional brain connectivity patterns associated with two hypnotic states.

While there's been clinical success and growing research interest in hypnosis, neurobiological underpinnings induced by hypnosis remain uncl … rginal gyri, cuneus, planum temporale, and lingual gyri. Multi-voxel- pattern analysis (MVPA) based seeds were implemented in a seed-to-voxel analysis unveiling region-specific increases and decreases in functional connectivity patterns. Physiologically, the respiration rate significantly slowed during hypnosis. Summarized, these findings foster fresh i …

The E3 Ubiquitin Ligase, CHIP/STUB1, Inhibits Aggregation of Phosphorylated Proteoforms of Microtubule-associated Protein Tau (MAPT).

Hyper-phosphorylated tau accumulates as insoluble fibrils in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. The strong correlation between phosphorylated tau and disease has led to an interest in understanding how cellular factors discriminate it from normal tau. Here, we screen a panel of chaperones containing tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) domains to identify those that might selectively interact with phosphorylated tau. We find that the E3 ubiquitin ligase, CHIP/STUB1, binds 10-fold more strongly to phosphorylated tau than unmodified tau. The presence of even sub-stoichiometric concentrati

Heart Block Initiated by Candlenut Ingestion.

The candlenut tree is a tropical plant that has a vast number of uses which include fertilizer, dye, ink for tattooing, and fuel. The inner seed of the nut is the most utilized portion of the plant and is often sold as a food additive, natural laxative, or a weight loss supplement. Unfortunately, the seed itself is very toxic when consumed whole and in its raw state. Typical symptoms of toxicity include abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rarely, it can cause cardiac dysrhythmias, most commonly bradycardia and atrioventricular heart block. We present a case of a young adult female with no

Sulfur Dioxide: An Emerging Signaling Molecule in Plants.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) has long been viewed as toxic gas and air pollutant, but now is being verified as a signaling molecule in mammalian cells. SO2 can be endogenously produced and rapidly transformed into sulfur-containing compounds (e.g., hydrogen sulfide, cysteine, methionine, glutathione, glucosinolate, and phytochelatin) to maintain its homeostasis in plant cells. Exogenous application of SO2 in the form of gas or solution can trigger the expression of thousands of genes. The physiological functions of these genes are involved in the antioxidant defense, osmotic adjustment, and synthesis

Simultaneous removal of nitrate and heavy metals in a biofilm reactor filled with modified biochar.

A biofilm reactor filled with chia seeds gum modified biochar was set up for the simultaneous removal of nitrate, cadmium and zinc from calcium-containing wastewater via denitrification and microbially-induced (calcium) carbonate precipitation. The reactor performance was studied under different conditions of pH, Cd concentration, and hydraulic retention time. The optimal removal efficiency of the reactor for NO3--N, Ca2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ were 99.98, 79.89, 100, and 99.84 %, respectively. 3D-EEM indicated the aromatic compounds confirming the stability of the reactor. FTIR illustrated the prese…

Myrtle-Functionalized Nanofibers Modulate Vaginal Cell Population Behavior While Counteracting Microbial Proliferation.

Vaginal infections affect millions of women annually worldwide. Therapeutic options are limited, moreover drug-resistance increases the need to find novel antimicrobials for health promotion. Recently phytochemicals were re-discovered for medical treatment. Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) plant extracts showed in vitro antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties thanks to their bioactive compounds. The aim of the present study was to create novel nanodevices to deliver three natural extracts from leaves, seeds and fruit of myrtle, in vaginal milieu. We explored their effect on human c…

Modulation of Working Memory and Resting-State fMRI by tDCS of the Right Frontoparietal Network.

Many cognitive functions, including working memory, are processed within large-scale brain networks. We targeted the right frontoparietal ne … agnitude of resting-state functional connectivity decreases between the stimulated FPN seed and DMN seeds. We provide the first evidence for the action reappraisal mechanism of object and tool processing. Modulation of cognitive speed of the task by tDCS was reflected by FPN-DMN cross-talk changes.

Patterns of olfactory functional networks in Parkinson's disease dementia and Alzheimer's dementia.

Hyposmia is common in Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). We evaluated the pattern of olfactory functional connectivity (FC) in AD and PDD to uncover neural correlates that are related to olfactory dysfunction. This study enrolled 57 patients with AD and PDD and 25 control subjects. Using a seed-based approach, we compared the resting-state network from the seed-region-of-interest in the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, piriform cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) between groups. The PDD group showed lower FC with striatal-thalamic-frontal regions from the olfa

Disseminated Peritoneal Leiomyomatosis Status Post Laparoscopic Hysterectomy with Morcellation.

Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are common benign neoplasms, which develop from the muscular tissue of the uterus with an estimated incidence of 20-40% in women of reproductive age. In the early nineties, power morcellators were introduced and became commonly used during hysterectomy for symptomatic fibroids. However, if all fragments are not removed, they may parasitize to other blood supply and present as abdominal or pelvic masses. Unfortunate cases have also been reported in which uterine sarcomas seeded throughout the abdomen and pelvis secondary to morcellation. The Food and Drug Administr

Efficient bridging of 20 mm rat sciatic nerve lesions with a longitudinally micro-structured collagen scaffold.

An increasing number of biomaterial nerve guides has been developed that await direct comparative testing with the 'gold-standard' autologous nerve graft in functional repair of peripheral nerve defects. In the present study, 20 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged with either a collagen-based micro-structured nerve guide (Perimaix) or an autologous nerve graft. Axons regenerated well into the Perimaix scaffold and, the majority of these axons grew across the 20 mm defect into the distal nerve segment. In fact, both the total axon number and the number of retrogradely traced somatosensory

VACCINES. A mucosal vaccine against Chlamydia trachomatis generates two waves of protective memory T cells.

Genital Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection induces protective immunity that depends on interferon-γ-producing CD4 T cells. By contrast, we report that mucosal exposure to ultraviolet light (UV)-inactivated Ct (UV-Ct) generated regulatory T cells that exacerbated subsequent Ct infection. We show that mucosal immunization with UV-Ct complexed with charge-switching synthetic adjuvant particles (cSAPs) elicited long-lived protection in conventional and humanized mice. UV-Ct-cSAP targeted immunogenic uterine CD11b(+)CD103(-) dendritic cells (DCs), whereas UV-Ct accumulated in tolerogenic CD11b(-)

Does resting-state connectivity reflect depressive rumination? A tale of two analyses.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is characterized by rumination. Prior research suggests that resting-state brain activation reflects rumination when depressed individuals are not task engaged. However, no study has directly tested this. Here we investigated whether resting-state epochs differ from induced ruminative states for healthy and depressed individuals. Most previous research on resting-state networks comes from seed-based analyses with the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). By contrast, we examined resting state connectivity by using the complete multivariate connectivity profile (i.e.

Helicobacter canis bacteraemia in a 7-month-old child.

On the basis of biochemical, phenotypic and 16S rRNA analyses, Helicobacter canis was isolated and identified from an otherwise healthy 7-month-old girl with intermittent fever. Blood cultures signalled bacterial growth after 5 days that was characterized as small gram-negative spiral rods. Subculturing on Colombia plates with 5% sheep blood, chocolate agar and brucella agar, aerobically and anaerobically as well as in a microaerophilic atmosphere, showed scanty growth after an additional 4 days. Secondarily seeded with fluid from the original bottle, the paediatric blood bottles repeatedly si

Spatial resolution dependence of DTI tractography in human occipito-callosal region.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fiber tracking have been used to measure the fiber structural connectivity in humans in a non-invasive manner. However, low sensitivity is a principal limitation of these methods, causing a large number of possibly missing fiber tracts (FTs). Here we studied how the spatial resolution affects the sensitivity of the fiber tracing by rescaling data to different resolutions. Our data suggest that the spatial resolution can change the degree of the asymmetric cross-callosal connections in the lower visual field (loVF) compared to the upper visual field (upVF). Am

Detection of bacteria in blood by centrifugation and filtration.

Culture of blood is the most frequent means of diagnosing bacteremia. However, conventional blood culturing methods are slow in isolating bacteria. We developed a method for isolation of bacteria by centrifugation and filtration. Fresh human whole blood was inoculated with facultatively anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms (3 to 172 microorganisms per 5 ml). Seeded blood was then mixed with Ficoll-Hypaque (density, 1.149 +/- 0.002 g/ml) and centrifuged (386 x g) for 30 min at ambient temperature. The entire gradient (plasma, leukocytes, and Ficoll-Hypaque) was removed and filtered through a 0.
