Unique associations between peer relations and social anxiety in early adolescence.

This study examined the unique associations between feelings of social anxiety and multiple dimensions of peer relations (positive peer nominations, peer- and self-reported peer victimization, and self-reported friendship quality) among 383 sixth- and seventh-grade students. Hierarchical regression analysis provided evidence for the unique contribution made by peer relations to social anxiety above that made by adolescents' individual vulnerabilities (i.e., teacher ratings of social behavior, self-reported social appraisals assessed by hypothetical vignettes). Two subgroups of socially anxious

Emotion-focused therapy for generalized anxiety disorder: An exploratory study.

Among psychological therapies for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), cognitive-behavioral therapy has a dominant position as the most studied therapy. However, some researchers have recommended that to increase treatment options and broaden choice for clients, non-cognitive-behavioral therapy models for GAD should be examined. The present study was an exploratory study, assessing pre-post outcomes and 6-month follow-up of emotion-focused therapy for GAD, supplemented by qualitative posttherapy client accounts of helpful and unhelpful aspects of therapy and changes reported since therapy start

How the Content and Referential Form of Self-Talk Influence Experimental Pain.

BACKGROUND: Limitations of pharmacological treatments and psychotherapeutic interventions for pain highlight the need for complementary pain-coping strategies. Although questionnaire studies suggest that self-talk may be effective in chronic pain management, experimental evidence remains scarce. METHODS: Our three within-subject experiments employed a cold pressor task to investigate the effects of self-talk content (self-compassionate or motivational) and its referential form (first-, second-, or third-person self-reference) on pain experience, assessed via self-reported pain intensity and h

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) for the reduction of the self-stigma of mental disorders: the COMpassion for Psychiatric disorders, Autism and Self-Stigma (COMPASS) study protocol for a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: People with mental disorders face frequent stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors from others. Importantly, they can internalize such negative attitudes and thus self-stigmatize. Self-stigma is involved in diminished coping skills leading to social avoidance and difficulties in adhering to care. Reducing self-stigma and its emotional corollary, shame, is thus crucial to attenuate the negative outcomes associated with mental illness. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy that targets shame reduction and hostile self-to-self relationship and allo

Trends in the accuracy of self-reported cigarette smoking in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Self-reported data are commonly utilized to track trends in tobacco use and assess the impact of policy changes. Estimates derived from self-reported measures, especially for behaviours considered socially undesirable, can be influenced by reporting biases. Enhanced tobacco control measures may have exacerbated social desirability bias resulting in increased underreporting of tobacco use. Our aim was to assess the accuracy of self-reported cigarette smoking. METHODS: Using repeated cross-sectional data from six cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) conducted betwe
