Quality of life in patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome.

AIM: The goal of the study was to investigate quality of life (QOL) in adult patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) and to test the relationship of QOL with the level of self-care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We distributed two questionnaires to 30 outpatients with MCNS. The MOS 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36v2) was used to examine health-related QOL in comparison with normative data from the general Japanese population and a population with two chronic diseases. SF-36v2 consists of 36 questions classified into 8 subscales. We also used the Self-Care Behavior Scale for pat

Paying to belong: when does rejection trigger ingratiation?

Societies and social scientists have long held the belief that exclusion induces ingratiation and conformity, an idea in contradiction to robust empirical evidence linking rejection with hostility and aggression. The classic literatures on ingratiation and conformity help resolve this contradiction by identifying circumstances under which rejection may trigger efforts to ingratiate. Jointly, findings from these literatures suggest that when people are given an opportunity to impress their rejecters, ingratiation is likely after rejection experiences that are harsh and that occur in important s

Social mind representation: where does it fail in frontotemporal dementia?

We aimed at investigating social disability and its cerebral correlates in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). To do so, we contrasted answers of patients with early-stage FTD and of their relatives on personality trait judgment and on behavior prediction in social and emotional situations. Such contrasts were compared to control contrasts calculated with answers of matched controls tested with their relatives. In addition, brain metabolism was measured in patients with positron emission tomography and the [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose method. Patients turned out to be as accurate as controls in descri

[The nasal and pharyngeal swab techniques during the COVID-19-pandemic - the ENT-perspective - SARS-CoV-2, Coronavirus, nasal swab, pharyngeal swab, complications].

Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, swabs or other samples have increasingly been taken from the upper aero-digestive tract, since high viral loads exist here, especially in the early stages of the disease. As diagnostic options, swabs from the anterior nose, from the nasopharynx, from the oropharynx or the extraction of throat rinse water or saliva are possible. The laboratory methods available are antigen tests that can be read in a few minutes or more lengthy RT-PCR methods in a lab. Swabs are carried out by physicians, medical staff, laypeople and in the self-test, in each case

Reaction time and rhythm of movement in Huntington's disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is characterized by several hyperkinesias though motor slowness is also another cardinal in this disease. In addition, self-paced timing movements are also disturbed in HD, which may also affect several rhythmic voluntary movements such as gait. Motor slowness can be measured with clinical scales such as the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and timed tests, but also with the reaction time (RT) paradigm. We evaluated RT as a measure of motor slowness in 30 patients with genetically confirmed Huntington's disease and 24 control subjects. We also evaluated

Nano- and Micro-SiO2 With Integrated Green Chemistry-Based Superhydrophobic Coating for Robust Antifouling and Anticorrosion Properties.

With increasing energy demands, the need for coating materials with exceptional superhydrophobic properties has grown substantially. However, the widespread use of fluorinated compounds, solvents, and polymer-based synthetic materials has led to heightened levels of microplastics and pollutants. Here, we used a self-curing, solvent-free, and recyclable polyester polyol polymer material combined with (5 and 6.5 μm) micro- and nanosized SiO2 (μ-SiO2 and n-SiO2) particles to create superhydrophobic coatings with contact angles above 170° and low roll-off angle. They were applied for self-cleaning

Self-calibrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering-lateral flow immunoassay for determination of amyloid-β biomarker of Alzheimer's disease.

Rapid early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is critical for its effective and prompt treatment since the clinically available treatments can only relieve the symptoms or slow the disease progression. However, it is still a grand challenge to accurately diagnose AD at its early stage because of the indiscernible early symptoms and the lack of sensitive detection tools. Here, we develop a self-calibrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) biosensor for quantitative analysis of amyloid-β1-42 (Aβ1-42) biomarker in biofluids, enabling accurate AD diagnos

No effect of short term exposure to gambling like reward systems on post game risk taking.

Is engaging with gambling-like video game rewards a risk factor for future gambling? Despite speculation, there are no direct experimental tests of this "gateway hypothesis". We test a mechanism that might support this pathway: the effects of engaging with gambling-like reward mechanisms on risk-taking. We tested the hypothesis that players exposed to gambling-like rewards (i.e., randomised rewards delivered via a loot box) would show increased risk-taking compared to players in fixed and no reward control conditions. 153 participants (Mage = 25) completed twenty minutes of gameplay-including

New digital methods: remodelling the harms tangent scale setting.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to present a feasibility study to evaluate and compare a self-constructed, digital-based tangent scale using the Harms tangent screen test for the examination of patients' strabismus angles. METHODS: The documented strabismus angles of 10 patients were measured at nine gaze-positions and compared using the Harms tangent screen test (Harms Screen) and a self-constructed digital screen test (Digital Screen). The primary outcome is the difference in the measured angles between both methods. Secondary outcomes include the duration of the examinations and the diag

Total Sleep Time Interacts With Age to Predict Cognitive Performance Among Adults.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate interactions between high and low amounts of sleep and other predictors of cognitive performance. METHODS: We used four cognitive tests to determine whether sleep time interacted with age, personal history of a memory problem, parental history of a memory problem, or personal concerns about memory and were associated with cognitive performance. Data were collected from an internet-based cohort study. We used an ordinary least squares regression with restricted cubic splines, controlling for demographic variables and comorbidities. RESULTS: We found significan

Survey of the frequency of olfactory dysfunction in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory function is related to the scrutiny of environmental dangers and the tasting of food. However, olfactory dysfunction is not as distinctive as visual loss and may go unnoticed, especially when olfactory function deteriorates slowly. Most studies have used either questionnaires or relatively insensitive tests to assess olfactory dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of olfactory dysfunction in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 211 participants were recruited randomly from the community, factories or offices in Taichung City, Taiwan fro

The Role of Glymphatic Clearance in Affective Decision-Making in Adolescents with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) frequently exhibit severe sleep disturbances and heterogeneous cognitive impairments, yet the underlying neurophysiological basis remains unclear. The glymphatic system, a sleep-dependent macroscopic clearance network, is critical for metabolic waste removal and neurocognitive homeostasis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the physiological role of glymphatic function in linking sleep burden to distinct cognitive performances in adolescents with NSSI. METHODS: We assessed 44 NSSI adolescents and 33 healthy controls (HCs). U
