Immunogenicity and seroefficacy of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination of infants with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines is recommended by the World Health Organization. Evidence is mixed regarding the differences in immunogenicity and efficacy of the different pneumococcal vaccines. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to compare the immunogenicity of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine-10 versus pneumococcal conjugate vaccine-13. The main secondary objective was to compare the seroefficacy of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine-10 versus pneumococcal conjugate vaccine-13. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Global Health, MEDLINE,

Immunogenicity and safety of an 18-month booster dose of the VLA15 Lyme borreliosis vaccine candidate after primary immunisation in healthy adults in the USA: results of the booster phase of a randomised, controlled, phase 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of Lyme borreliosis, a tickborne disease attributed to infection by Borrelia species, are increasing, and limitations to existing treatments potentiate the possibility of severe outcomes. Nevertheless, there are no licensed vaccines for Lyme borreliosis prevention in humans. This study investigated the immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of VLA15, an investigational outer surface protein A (OspA)-based Lyme borreliosis vaccine that has previously shown safety and immunogenicity when administered as a primary vaccination series, following a primary VLA15 vacc

Assessment of rAAVrh.74.MHCK7.micro-dystrophin Gene Therapy Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Children With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

This case-control study uses magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy to evaluate the association between treatment with recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype rh74 (rAAVrh74) and muscle quality in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Multilab Validation Report for the Verification and Subtyping of Listeria monocytogenes Using qPCR.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes invasive listeriosis, an illness with high mortality and hospitalization rates. Due to the severity of illness associated with Lm, rapid identification and characterization of isolates from foods and the food-processing environment are critical to properly identify and track the pathogen and quickly remove adulterated foods from the market. Prior methods can rely on time-consuming biochemical or sera-agglutination assays to perform these tasks. Development of a high-throughput method that would rapidly perform these tasks is

[Anti-meningococcal vaccines].

Current anti-meningococcal vaccines are prepared from capsular saccharides (plain or conjugate). They target four serogroups A, C, Y and W135. No vaccine is available against serogroup B saccharide. However, protein-based vaccines (recombinant vaccines or outer membrane vesicle vaccines) allow developing vaccines against serogroup B isolates.

Meningococcal disease in South Africa, 1999-2002.

We describe the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease in South Africa from August 1999 through July 2002, as reported to a laboratory-based surveillance system. Neisseria meningitidis isolates were further characterized. In total, 854 cases of laboratory-confirmed disease were reported, with an annual incidence rate of 0.64/100,000 population. Incidence was highest in infants < 1 year of age. Serogroup B caused 41% of cases; serogroup A, 23%; serogroup Y, 21%; serogroup C, 8%; and serogroup W135, 5%. Serogroup B was the predominant serogroup in Western Cape Province, and disease rates

[Current situation of the epidemiology of meningococcal disease].

Neisseria meningitidis, the etiological agent of all forms of meningococcal disease, is still a cause for concern among society in general and especially among health workers. Several of its antigens have been used in strain characterization, and some have served as the basis for the development of vaccines. In this sense, the best known are the capsular polysaccharide, which defines the serogroups, the outer membrane protein of class 2/3, used for serotype classification, and the class 1 porins, defining the serosubtype. During the last 30 years, most cases of meningococcal disease in Spain h

A possible secondary case of pneumococcal meningitis.

Although institutional outbreaks of pneumococcal infection have been reported, secondary cases of pneumococcal meningitis do not seem to have been described. We report two cases of pneumococcal meningitis involving the same serotype occurring in individuals with direct contact.

Serovars of Erysipelothrix strains isolated from pigs affected with erysipelas in Japan.

Serovars of 1,046 Erysipelothrix strains isolated from diseased pigs during a period from 1983 to 1993 in Japan were determined by an agar gel double-diffusion precipitation system using typing sera representing all the known serovars, 1 through 23 and type N, of 2 species of Erysipelothrix. A total of 943 strains could be serotyped within the serovars. The remaining 103 strains could not be determined for their serovars and were classified as untypable. Of the 938 (99.5%) strains serologically identified as Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, 423 (40.4%) belonged to serovar 1a, 359 (34.3%) to serov

[Leptospirosis in Pomurje and Slovenia].

In Pomurje leptospirosis is endemic. During the years 1964-1985 there were 407 leptospiral cases reported in Slovenia, 366 of which were in Pomurje. Inclusion in this study required indication of leptospirae with a fourfold increase of the titer of antibodies or the isolation of leptospirae from hemocultures. In Pomurje in this period 214 men (58.47%) and 152 women (41.53%) were infected. The average morbidity rate was 12.75/100,000 inhabitants. The highest rate was in the country of Lendava (23.14/100,000). Ten serotypes were confirmed: grippotyphosa in 122 (33.33%) of the patients, sejroe in

Serovars of Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria innocua from food.

The increase of listeriosis outbreaks in recent years has mainly been due to the consumption of contaminated dairy products. This prompted a revision of prevention and control measures. Cheese and other foods (meat, poultry meat) were investigated. For isolation, samples were prepared and investigated according to the recommendations of the FDA with some modifications including, in particular, sub-enrichment. Suspicious colonies were tested biochemically followed by serological identification with factor sera. Out of 100 chicken (95 broilers, 5 layers) Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from

Leptospirosis in the Melut district--upper Nile province (south Sudan)--an overview.

The authors examined 195 domestic animals for leptospirosis serologically in Sudan (170 cattle, 7 sheep and 18 goats) and 771 wild animals (36 species) with 13 serovars from 13 serogroups. 54% of domestic animals namely, 108 cattle and 1 sheep were positive in titer levels of 1:400 and higher. Cattle sera with the serovars of the serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae were 2.4% positive with Cynopteri 2.4%, Autumnalis 3.5%, Australis 1.2%, Pomona 2.9%, Grippotyphosa 2.9%, Hebdonadis 17.1%, Bataviae 9.4% and Tarassovi 50.6%. Only one Numida meleagris of the 54 wild birds (14 species) was positive in low
